Please help me clean the ice machine? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by emmaniamh
I already posted this on the other subreddit but got comments along the line of "good luck with that". I have to clean the ice machine for clean play. The person that normally does it won't be in.

I have the print out from the partner hub but it's very confusing and I don't understand it.

Help, I'm literally having anxiety nightmares about this. I'm worried to break it or put chemicals somewhere wrong or cause a flood. I even saw a post of a girl who broke her finger cleaning the ice machine and I'm terrified 😨

Back when I was a green bean, an SSV tried to clean the ice machine, read the manual… ended up with our ice machine broken for 6 months. It was amazing. Not a single frap. So if anything goes wrong… corporate might not like it but the baristas sure will!
(And don’t worry; even if you do something like that, no one at our store got fired/in trouble for it. They should train you first!)

Do you know how they broke it?

Haha no - I’m not sure even the repairmen knew how they broke it. There were multiple call outs 😂 I wish you luck!!

It’s not scary i promise :) A little tedious but not hard. Basically you have to scoop out all the ice from the machine until it’s completely empty. The morning crew should have turned it off earlier in the day so it doesn’t keep filling up. You can’t clean it if they never turned it off. Your SSV should know where the cleaner is for the machine, it’s a greenish liquid that gets diluted with water. You take off the cover for the ice machine and the pieces that cover the grills where the ice forms. You wash them in the sink and pop them back on. There’s going to be something resembling a gutter sitting horizontally across the machine with water running through it. You pour the diluted solution into it slowly and press the purge button a few times. The next part is where it gets a little annoying. You’re gonna have to keep refilling a pitcher with water and pouring it into the same place you poured the cleaner. Keep pouring like 10-12 pitchers and pressing “purge” until ALL of the soap suds are gone. Then you’re gonna take a clean sanitizer cloth and wipe down the entire inside ice bin. Then you’re good to go!

Aww I am so sorry I can't help you bc I'm also a green bean and I haven't been shown how either :((. But maybe you could text/call a shift or store manager? I know my managers are super nice about stuff like that, especially if it's store related and especially since it's deep cleaning something. All I can remember from seeing a coworker clean the ice machine is that there was water running in it I believe and she had to take off the front cover (right above the hole for scooping out the ice is the large square cover that basically covers the whole front). She also had to look for some blue liquid in a smallish bottle. She also had some trouble taking off the cover, I think you might need a small tool.

Thanks for the reply! I think just the one person knows how to do it. Makes sense cause it seems pretty complicated.
