Yeah hi…hello I’m a green bean apparently and I’m so nervous to actually really start anything next week. I had training the last few days and it was awesome! I’m just struggling in DTO, hot bar and need a little more practice with cold bar. I’m so afraid that I’m going to suck at my location and mess up so much to the point I get fired. 🥲 Any tips? It would be much appreciated ❤️

i promise there’s literally nothing you can do in terms of your skills and abilities that will get you fired unless you just have an a**hole for a SM. just take your time and you’ll figure things out. do not stress and DONT try to do everything all of the time. it is actually quite annoying for the veteran partners at the store. just stay planted and do the best you can! i promise it’ll get easier it genuinely just takes time and practice. don’t lose sleep over this job! it’s just coffee <3

For me, I tell all my green beans that are some point it’ll just click. Some learn faster than others but it just takes time to adapt your muscle memory. I was bad at bar for 3 months until one day I remembered every number of shots/syrups! Everyone in the store gives leeway to green beans for at least a few months so don’t worry about getting fired. My main tip would but to just not give up! Keep an open mind to learning and try your best BUT don’t get frustrated with yourself if you can’t pick it up. You’ll do great I believe in you!

It takes 3-6 months to become a fully competent barista. Nobody is expecting you to be perfect straight out of training. Also, everywhere is desperately hiring right now and you really gotta fuck up to be fired.

Haha okay thank you! ❤️

For me and all managers I’ve met, it’s understood it can take a few months to be fully sufficient on your own. It’s okay 🥰

I’m also a green bean. We are going to make mistakes. We are going to suck sometimes. Our trainers, shift leads, managers, etc all were in our shoes at one point too. They made mistakes and sucked at one point. Don’t give yourself too high expectations. Set it at your pace, don’t let anyone make you feel stupid for making mistakes or asking questions. Don’t let anyone make you feel rushed. Its okay to make mistakes, you’re learning. You have no experience yet. Just keep practicing, ask lots of questions, retain the information, take notes, study the recipes, and see if you can get some extra time or if you have down time to practice drinks. Sometimes I’ll watch videos over and over on YouTube of baristas making drinks and then practice it at work. Practice makes perfect in due time. You will do great!! Making friends with your trainer and shift leads will make you feel more comfortable too so you won’t feel stupid for asking questions or messing up. Take your time and give yourself some kudos every time you do something right. Be patient! You got this!!

It's a huge learning curve, you aren't expected to know everything or be perfect immediately. Admit when you don't know something, ask for help when you need it. You can do this.
I find the biggest concern for our newer partners is not being fast enough. We'd rather you take the time to learn things correctly, get used to doing it, instead of just going fast. The more confident you are you're doing it right, the faster you'll go eventually.
For DTO, you're taking orders just like you would at Cafe register. You can absolutely ask people to repeat things, say it a little louder, or read it back as you're typing it to have more time to find the buttons. Just make sure as people set things down you move the items window needs over to them.
For bar in general, try to remember the syrup, shots, and which drinks get half dose (CBS) pumps. If you put the drink together in the right order that's half the battle.
At the end of the day it's just coffee, so don't let customers stress you. If they're impatient, or in a rush, or just rude, that's their behavioral problem, not us. Be polite and kill them with kindness so they go away faster.

You will struggle. And that's okay you're new. Nobody knows everything at the start. If you have questions ask. You'll get better and more comfortable with time.
When it comes to DTO the job itself isn't hard. Remember that you control the interaction. If you need to ask someone to hold on a second or to repeat something you can do that. It's also really helpful if they start on another item to pretend you're not sure if you have it. If someone has a long drink order I'm still typing in and they go on to food I'll often say something like "let me check and make sure we still have that" just to give myself time to finish typing in the earlier part.
You'll learn where things are on the register the more you do it and will get quicker.
Most people are pretty accommodating if you let them know you're new too and if they're not that's not on you.
I hope things go well and am wishing you the best!
