‘Light ice’ (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Cauliflower29
When someone orders a drink with light ice do you give them extra liquid or leave room? A co worker said Starbucks will change its policy soon and the new standard will be to leave room
Kivic 182 points 1y ago
Extra liquid. Even if they change the policy, I’ll still do extra liquid because it’s not worth the complaints. As soon as Starbucks gets all the complaints about it they will change it again, they always do.
Webshooter38 37 points 1y ago
I will totally use the new policy to not give people straight acai though
paethiest 24 points 1y ago
wait is there a policy against that? ive had people come in and ask for trentas of JUST the base & we run out so quickly when that happens and we have to constantly make more and almost ran out the day before our order came in 😅
Webshooter38 9 points 1y ago
No, but the post above said if they ask for light ice, to leave room, so if assume it would apply to people ordering just acai
paethiest 5 points 1y ago
Ahhhh I'm a baby barista rn so im still just learning but i didnt see the other post
My manager has us charge for 2 grandes if they a venti or trenta acai base only because of how much product it wastes
zosterthetoaster24 7 points 1y ago
I totally get it with refreshers, but I’ve got a question about this for espresso drinks. So I had someone order a quad espresso in a venti cup, light ice, and light milk. Obviously, the shots didn’t fill the whole cup, and they didn’t want extra milk to make up the difference, so like…what then? She was unhappy that the cup wasn’t full, but I’m not going to give you extra espresso for free either. I got conflicting advice from my store, so I’m totally confused on this point.
MysticalGnar 15 points 1y ago
Leave it empty. If they want a full cup order an actual drink.
Kivic 5 points 1y ago
For the shots of espresso I definitely leave room usually. Unless they order it with extra milk or some more add ons like the cold foams
BaristaBabeSC 105 points 1y ago
Extra liquid.
bumblebuzzed 66 points 1y ago
when people say “light ice” i kinda assume its because they want more drink than ice. fill it up
Ok_Reflection_9793 14 points 1y ago
Honest I say light ice to every drink since I actually hate ice. I would get it without any ice but I do want my drink a little cold. 😀
miniinovaa 8 points 1y ago
Would not recommend for Frappuccino’s haha
Ok_Reflection_9793 9 points 1y ago
Lol. I don't order those but good advice. 😆
lily-amber 4 points 1y ago
Lmao, my mind set is “oh you want ice?! HAVE YOUR LIGHT ICE” and i’ll give them a watery gross “frappe”. I’ve had someone insist on a brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso with light ice and even after attempting to explain why he wouldn’t like that, he argued about it, then when I handed it to him he was so mad. “what is this?? Just espresso and syrup?“ So my manager came up and said “basically, yes. Topped off with a splash of milk”.
ObitoUchiha41 1 points 1y ago
wouldn’t that just be a little more diluted with oat milk? that’s how I make the drink myself tbh, slightly weaker but it gives me more drink 🤷‍♀️
lily-amber 5 points 1y ago
Same! I wouldn’t be mad if there were room but ice just waters down my drinks especially because i take my after shift drink home and save it for the next morning.
squishfan 6 points 1y ago
I order light ice because I want to save it for later and don’t want a bunch of ice to melt in the meantime
IfuDidntCome2Party 0 points 1y ago
One time I received so much ice in a passion iced tea, my straw would not pass through the hole in lid. Needless to say they had to remake it.

Light Ice for me, from now on.
bumblebuzzed 8 points 1y ago
there’s a specific amount of ice that we’re meant to put in, it’s even measured on the shakers we use for refreshers and teas, but asking for light or extra is no problem and i get everyone likes a different amount. it’s an easy customization. i’m one of the weird “extra ice” people lol
here_forthefun 52 points 1y ago
Extra liquid. There hasn’t been a policy change mentioning it. So unless that happens, you still fill the cup
arcanalalune 42 points 1y ago
Extra liquid.

I think that's what most people assume is the tradeoff. If you go to a fast food place and order a coke with light ice, it's not like they leave room in those.
lovelymissjenna 24 points 1y ago
I’m a customer who usually requests light ice.. but it’s because because I hate when I can’t drink it fast enough and the melted ice messes up the actual drink ratio /coffee+mlk+flavoring. I’m probs the minority and most ppl are trying to scam or hack the system into more beverage or whatever. Oh but it’s only with iced coffee, not iced lattes or espresso since I know I’ll drink those up real fast
Sea-Nectarine-1522 12 points 1y ago
You’re paying a lot for your drink so I’m never really bothered for the reason people want light ice! The one thing that annoys me is when people order no ice with a cup of ice.
lovelymissjenna 7 points 1y ago
Lmao Well.. whenever my boyfriend and I are ordering together we’ll get my light-ice drink, his regular iced drink, and a venti cup of ice. I always figure it has to look bad. But to be fair— he is a disgusting monster who continuously adds more ice to his drink as it melts down. By the end it’s lightly coffee flavored ice water 🤢
molgriss 13 points 1y ago
Honestly go for liquid, it's not worth the complaints and some people will complain anyways about what "light ice" means
francescugh 10 points 1y ago
shaken espresso always leave room bc if u want a latte just get one its prob cheaper anyways
official_koda_ 9 points 1y ago
They’ll get light ice and filled up with whatever liquid cause I don’t get paid enough to argue with crazy people
miniinovaa 7 points 1y ago
If they change the policy I’d be so happy 😂😂 i know im awful but I love arguing with customers about policies
Cauliflower29 [OP] 4 points 1y ago
Okay same. I’m on my way out of here anyways so lately I’ve been arguing and talking back 😂😂😂 ITS SO FUN
witchwhichy 1 points 1y ago
same i just cackle my witch laugh. like sorry. not my problem. 🤷🏻‍♀️
star_pants 7 points 1y ago
They changed the policy like a year ago to give extra of the first liquid in the cup/main ingredient in refreshers/teas. They were trying to get people to ring it in as "extra base" to account for the product but that didn't really catch on
demdem75 2 points 1y ago
I forgot we were suppose to do that second part oops. Going this is thread I got upset and wanted to say something about the policy from a year ago. 😅
existenaliens 7 points 1y ago
I tend to ask which they prefer. I'd rather have them say it before making their drink than risk remaking.
Hobbs_and_I 6 points 1y ago
I have been told to ask customers which they prefer, because ESPECIALLY in the case of shaken espressos the whole drink dynamic can be changed.
Mikaylapancakes 6 points 1y ago
I always do extra liquid but if it’s no ice I leave room
YorkTownBratty 5 points 1y ago
Why did they start telling us to add extra milk to the shaken espresso when someone’s wants light ice then. I really wish they would pick a standard and stick to it.
throwaway2825272 5 points 1y ago
ask if they want the room or extra liquid
Normal_Human_4567 5 points 1y ago
Extra liquid and warn them it'll be weaker
paigemclachlan 4 points 1y ago
Honestly it’s not worth it to fight with a customer over this in my opinion. I just extra of the liquid
lily-amber 3 points 1y ago
I usually do extra liquid unless it’s like a grande in a venti with light ice or if they’re mean to me. I really don’t want to follow the new policy because people are so annoying about them. Like when we had to start charging refresher fruit pieces in water as custom tea or when the prices fluctuate customers want to argue during peak and I don’t make the rules!!
Cauliflower29 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Okay I work at a Tarbucks and when kids come and get water with fruit pieces I’ve never knows how to ring it up. Our custom tea has a base price of 3.75 so I just give them it for free
lily-amber 1 points 1y ago
Me too. If you enter the fruit pieces it charges at least 50 cents I think, which honestly seems like the correct charge if we have to charge at all.
Sirmarchboy22 3 points 1y ago
So, according to my dm, and all the managers I've had in California, it's room. And with the new auto ordering that's being implemented, we need to be ringing up accordingly apparently. Supposedly it's never been to ad extra milk.
acnh1222 2 points 1y ago
I think the policy is to leave room but I always fill it to the top, especially with refreshers or iced coffee (sorry to everyone who has to deal with the “but the other Starbucks fills it!”)
GarbageValuable1888 2 points 1y ago
If policy changes to leave room, I’ll apply that policy to Tr no ice no water green teas and Tr no ice no water strawberry açaí
RoughEvidence 2 points 1y ago
I hate when people ask for light ice on frappuccinos like what.
royalscandal 3 points 1y ago
Former barista here! In my experience, with both myself, coworkers, and customers, lighr ice frappuccinos tend to make them less thick and more ... watery? Which for some weird reason I ... like... because I'm weird like that. I don't really like thick, icy drinks but when I want a frappe, I like'em less frappy!
ElectricalScience8 1 points 1y ago
extra liquid. i work for corporate now but when i worked at @ macys sbux , we would charge them extra . we had people come get trenta strawberry açaís w no water and no ice all the time.

Well I was trained that standard with no ice is there’s room, but it’s not worth the arguments that you get from these spoiled ass customers that Starbucks has created to leave room in the cup 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s always a lose lose situation with this stuff. You follow standards you get bitched out by the customer & they get their way and if you give them extra liquid you get told by some way to serious by the book shift or SM that “Starbucks standard isn’t to give extra liquid” there is never going to be a win when your in this situation.
firepaper 1 points 1y ago
It depends what the drink is if it’s a shaken espresso or a drink that’s meant only to be topped with a splash of whatever then I leave the room. If it’s like half milk half something else like a pink drink I fill it up. And then depending on whzt the customer says I might have to change it 🤡🤡
wtchtrsh 1 points 1y ago
I think this should be something clarified when placing the order, like asking if people want classic in their iced coffee or whipped cream when alternative dairy is used. If they aren’t asked or don’t specify then you make to standard and if problems arise, nicely explain to them how to order next time.
Cauliflower29 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
This is what my store does, we ask if they still want the classic
cxbar 1 points 1y ago
it is technically policy to leave room but 99% of the time they’ll ask for more oat milk because they don’t understand how the drink is crafted. Every time my SM tried to enforce it someone complained, so we just gave up. lol

edit: replace oat milk for whatever liquid. BSSE was on my mind

I hope they do put out a policy and they print official documents and dedicate an obvious chunk of their website to it. I hate the "but the other Starbucks" or "other barista" arguments. With clear guidance, those can be put to rest with "the other way is wrong."
drinkliquidclocks 1 points 1y ago
Extra liquid has always been the standard, but only adding extra milk, water, etc. Not shots obviously.

I request lite ice on my lattes because it's too strong without extra milk.

Leave room. There's alot of regulars at our store that ask for light ice, because they want room. So that's what we do mostly
