hey! new green bean! any tips? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Majestic-Baker4718
i just finished my 4 day training and i start my official first shift tomorrow. i feel really confident about everything except bar and cold bar. is there anything anyone can think of to maybe make it easier to remember the different drinks and how much of what goes in what? i know it’s a weird question but any weird tips or tricks or anything would be super helpful!! thanks in advance!

*update*

so my shift was from 9:45-4
for reasons that i can’t disclose cause it might give away my location, my store closed down from like 11:30 all the way until 3 so it wasn’t as stressful as it could have been lol. i’m really confident at drive and i was put on solo drive until i had to leave once we reopened! and before that i was on warming and it was crazy with the breakfast rush but i tried not to get too backed up. my next shift is tomorrow!

take advantage of making drinks. ask to make your own when you can. if theres a quiet moment ask a shift if you can watch bar, or if its a slower shift, be ON bar. (or support)

accept that you’ll mess up, and it’ll range from “whoops lol” to “i have ruined everything and i wish i never worked here”. it’ll happen but how you recover/respond from those moments says more than those moments themselves. (anyone who says otherwise is dumb lol)

communicate often, and have fun! my trainer told me this: its just coffee. people who give you shit over it aren’t worth it. yeah it sucks but you’ll likely never see them again. bitching about bad customers is great but in the moment, focus on the tasks ahead and then go feral.

i’m still fairly new too, i started like a month ago, and after my training shifts, i made my own little cheat sheet of like basic recipes for hot&iced drinks! i personally got a lot of my info off of these starbucks reddit groups, and from the recipe cards that they have on bar for whoever needs them :)! when i didn’t work, i would study it for a while, and then i would fold it up and stick in in my apron pocket and take it with me to work so it was close to me if i needed it. when we were slow, i would pull it out of my pocket and reread it a couple of times, just to kinda remember anything i may have forgotten. i’m not a master yet, but because of the cheat sheet i made, i know how to make almost maybe basically all of the drinks. idk maybe it’s just me but i feel like once you learn how to make all the standard drinks, it’s really easy after that… i thought it would be really hard because of all of the customizations, but it’s mostly just constantly adjusting certain ingredients like substituting the standard milk for someone who wanted a different milk, or an extra shot of espresso or even less pumps of syrup, whatever the case may be. it definitely takes time to remember everything, i still sometimes struggle with it, i’m still a little bit slow, and i’ve had to remake a couple of drinks because i messed up, but for the most part i think i’m doing pretty well! especially considering the fact that it’s just barely been a month since i started! you got this!

Two resources for you.

Be sure to scroll down to the OP's link to their Google Drive, though. The infographic there was updated to correct a few errors. Don't use the one uploaded to Reddit.

Hey! I’ve been there 4 months now. It takes a while to get into a rhythm. Everybody there knows your new, so don’t worry about not knowing stuff right away. Also, if people are jerks just remind them that they were once new.
