I really like my SM!! She's a former nurse, which makes her really understanding concerning my chronic pain and how I take care of my disabled mom. She's just a lot of fun too--my first day, her and everyone working that day all crowded into the back office to welcome me and everyone was laughing and making jokes. She's also barely there at the same time as me because I'm a closer but when she's there she's great.

That’s awesome! There’s a lot of negative post about asm/sm & with good reasons I’m sure. Call me crazy but it’s pretty cool hearing stories about good management.

So a little back story for this post.
I’ve been a barista since 2005 and promoted to sac in 2019. In my time with SB I’ve seen many different types of managers ranging aholes to awesome! Today I find myself very fortunate to have a truly great SM. So I guess I’m just wondering what’s your experience?

I'm on my second store, third manager in the two years I've been with the company. My first manager was pretty by the book and was strict which has helped me build a solid foundation. She left for a new store with bigger opportunities. Her replacement was ass. She played favorites and let morning crew know she hated us and was pretty open about it. I left to open a new store and my current manager is pretty awesome. He respects all day parts equally and is strict when he needs to be.

I actually have a really good SM. I knew her from working at a previous store of hers. She and our then-ASM re-hired me immediately when I got laid off earlier this year, full-well knowing I wasn’t staying FT, if at all. When I got my now-FT job she lets me work one day a week (honestly it’s a nice break and 99% of the time I have a good time). She’s also been with the company over 15 years so she knows what we baristas and SSVs go through. She really has our backs when it comes to nut-jobs too.

That’s awesome! As I look to promote I can only hope to be as good a leader as the stories I hear. Both good and bad have helped me so far.

My former ASM is a good friend who I worked with twice now. She worked hard and was always mindful of how to balance leadership with what baristas experience. She is now getting her own store. As long as you remember there’s a balance to good leadership, you’ll be a great leader. Good luck in everything in the future :)

Been there! Before our current sm we didn’t have a manager for I wanna say 4mo. Not gonna lie it was stressful but managed

Our SM is equal parts friend and boss. She knows how to laugh, have a good time, and especially how to keep things interesting. But she knows her role and will always ensure that we all do, too. Strict, but fair. Fun, but professional. She's honestly one of, if not the best manager I have ever had.
