Telling My New Manager About My BP1(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Zatana07
Hi guys! I hope everyone is having a restful Monday night. I am writing this because I need advice. I’ve been at Starbucks for roughly 3 years and at my previous store I got made fun of because I have Bipolar Disorder (type one if you’re counting). I had really bad hand tremors for my medication which of gone away now but between people saying I wanted to cry or I’m crazy or other really rude things. When I told my manager she didn’t take it very well and now to tell my new manager at a new and much better store, I’m scared. I recently got moved to shift supervisor and I don’t want her to doubt my abilities because of my mental health. I’m considering waking up early to make a PowerPoint explaining bipolar disorder and all the types and symptoms and how I can still be productive and a good employee along with other famous celebrities who have Bipolar Disorder and are quite successful. What do you guys think?

It’s not required for you to tell your new manager about it. If you really want too, just have a one-on-one meeting about it. You are not your disorder. This is coming from someone who struggles with mental health issues as well. Nobody in my store knows I take meds or struggle etc. it’s just not worth the judgment or hassle.

True. Idk I already set up the meeting with her. I guess I just need a day off for my BP1. We’re low staffed and I tend to pick up hours wherever I can and I’ve become known for it so much that everyone wants me in theyre store for help. I can’t do it anymore. I’m so wiped out I can’t even paint anymore half the time because I’m so tiered. I just go to the gym and sleep. It’s crazy

What are the pros and cons of telling your new manager? Do you need support or potential understanding if you need time off? If there is no direct benefit to you, I wouldn’t tell them. Not just for BP, any medical condition. No one at work needs to know unless them knowing would directly benefit you.

Agreed, I don’t think the staff needs to know about ur medical issues. But communication with ur sm is a good idea, in the event something happens & you need that support for them. I have epilepsy and get extremely embarrassed when I have pedi mal seizures (to everyone else looks like I’m just spacing out) not the same thing I know but still an open line of communication shouldn’t reflect ur ability to do the job. Sorry for my rambling

No you’re fine. I had a really good talk with my GM about it and she was super understanding. I even sent her the CrashCourse video to fully explain it. Way better than my last store.
