i’m pissed at a customer’s joke (self.starbucksbaristas)

me, soloing drive: “hi what can I get for you today?”
customer, hopefully joking: “yeah can you punch my kid in the face for me?”
when i tell you my jaw DROPPED. i have NEVER refused to serve a customer but i immediately became so mad i started shaking. i was silent for a good ten seconds before i asked someone else to serve them.
for context, they sounded completely serious.

you really shouldn’t invalidate someone else’s reaction or experience based off how *you* feel about it. clearly it affected them differently, doesn’t give you any grounds to go off and call someone dramatic. especially considering you have NO idea what kind of environment they grew up in or currently live in outside of work. kindness is free, give a little.

I mean at that point I was at the end of my shift and very much fed up with customers and not in a joking mood. He also repeated it a second time when someone else said “excuse me?”
I was also not the only one to feel the way I did. I love kids and thought the joke was in very bad taste.
