A little off… (self.starbucksbaristas)

So I feel like my boss boss I’m assuming my manager is a bit racist…it’s like the type of energy she’s giving off and I don’t want to assume as well. Not to mention I am the only African American girl in there and when I ask her questions she makes it seem like I’m dumb…I’m two days in at Starbucks and today I just felt like she didn’t want me on the floor, yes I’m new but no one was on register today and I could have done that for them but it was customer support which I don’t mind at all, I just want to learn a little more and not feel nervous to ask her questions when I truly need it.

I hope she is not racist. I don’t like that you even have to worry about this, but unfortunately, you do. If it’s any comfort, many, many of the new employees seem to feel just as awkward or whatever. I hate racism, I really do.

I feel you. I’m the only African American girl at my location as well. Luckily my manager is amazing with an incredibly inclusive attitude. But I also happen to work in a very racist town. So while my manager is great, a lot of the customers give off that energy that you’re talking about.

If it helps, when I started, I was always put on register and warming. Wanted to go on bar so bad. I was eager. But the truth is, I wasn’t ready. Being on register actually helped prepare me for bar because it helped me memorize the drinks and what goes in them. So while I wanted to be on bar, my manager knew what was best for me and for the store, by starting me on register. Maybe your manager is doing the same with you, but in a really negative way. When you say you weren’t on the floor, do you mean you were on customer support? Because in my opinion, that’s the most important role and one of my favorite to be in.

If this attitude and racist energy continues with your manager, I’d talk to them about it if I were you (as scary as it sounds), or I’d contact the DM or ethics. You shouldn’t have to work in an environment like that, nor have to work with someone (especially if they’re your boss) who is racist.

I hope things get better for you.

Yes customer support. I kind of like it haha but I also want to go more on register because I’m starting to get it. But I understand what you mean. Thank you ❤️

If you're bothered by the manager, drop the job and find a different location. Easy peasy.

She’s at different locations as well…so not easy peasy. Thanks for that sweet suggestion though. ☺️

So she's the district manager? Or she's just a busy store manager?
Ravliaa [OP] 5 points 1y ago
To be completely honest I don’t know…I just know she’s at different locations as well. I’m new to all of this so- 🥲

Is she usually in the store, working full time, making the schedule? Because if so, she is that manager. If she is the manager than the other locations she’s managing would be temporary while a manger is on vacation or something. I’ve also heard of dual managing but never saw it and nothing more than. If she’s the dm she would come to the store and usually talk to your manager and walk around the store to check cleanliness, signage, organization etc. She would also not be in the store that often, maybe once a week max. If it’s your manager, you can talk about transferring to a store she isn’t in with your dm. If she’s your dm, you can avoid them for most of the time as long as your manager is good.
