So my shift printed out this letter from corporate that basically told us that Buffalo NY is trying to unionize starbucks. They then went on to politely threaten sbux employees to vote “no”.
I say we all go on strike and unionize ALL starbucks. We deserve better than them.
CommanderWar64151 points1y ago
Talk to people in your store, right now the people at mine have had enough of management’s bullshit that we just might. For me it’s either unionize or quit.

How about instead we fight to make a better place for us and the people who have to come in after us?
CommanderWar6445 points1y ago
I don't want the next people who work there to be treated the same. I can leave a union, that's no problem, but that union needs to be there for someone else in the future. We can let big companies like Starbucks who have operated this same way for 50 fucking years get away with shit like this.
amx109s36 points1y ago
There's other entry-level fields that have unions. Why are we different than them?
CommanderWar640 points1y ago
Exactly, there’s nothing wrong with workers having some say in their own workplace.

It all depends on your leadership in your region/district. Before covid I worked in a district where the DM almost refused to hire people that didn’t have at least two years at a community college completed for some reason, then was always confused as to why stores were always understaffed.

you don’t have to go on strike to unionize— if you and other coworkers are serious, contact workers united. they’re unionizing buffalo starbucks and have unionized other coffee chains.

Fuck em. Have good old rose work a shift at Starbucks for a week and watch her crumble like a blueberry muffin. Unions are a good thing and for corporate to hammer it in our brains that we shouldn’t be able to stand up for ourselves ? They can replace us sure. But in the end they are a crappy company with horrible work environments and on a good day I hope the blender breaks so I don’t have to make twenty million FRAPPUCCINOs
wipies294 points1y ago
Who is rose?
wikipedia_answer_bot9 points1y ago
**A rose is a woody perennial flowering plant of the genus Rosa, in the family Rosaceae, or the flower it bears. There are over three hundred species and tens of thousands of cultivars.**

My manager was telling me about this letter today and there was apparently tons of comments on “workplace” which she said is the companies social media platform via Facebook. Apparently the comments were from stores managers and corporate partners with legitimate concerns about Starbucks Workers United getting unfair treatment. The comments apparently must have been too controversial because they TOOK THE POST DOWN! According to her. Internally trying to hide their response to the union push… that’s another level now.
anartistnamedjes [OP]38 points1y ago
That is insane. I saw some of the comments, my shift also left one. A lot of them seemed like they were extremely disappointed in the letter. As they should be The letter was absolutely infuriating.
StarbzBoi28 points1y ago
I was just surprised to hear even the corporate partners in Seattle were standing up for what’s happening in Buffalo
BeardiesRule11220 points1y ago
It’s about time they stand up for something, they’ve been sitting their asses at home for the last year and a half doing jack shit.
dogsofwintergaming7 points1y ago
Post is still on WorkPlace and there are a lot of posts for and against unions on it.
Babs922052 points1y ago
Tell me where I can sign. I already quit because it's such bullshit.
reddskeleton47 points1y ago
Customer here — I’m 100% in favor of you guys unionizing. Godspeed, you magnificent baristas!
Tha_jphil8 points1y ago
Can I get 100 cases of you on the next order?
RUddertown1 points1y ago
Sorry, nice customer shortage :/
drinkbleachbitch38 points1y ago
Buffalonian- they closed a store here for “renovations” and then closed another store for “company training”
Material-Leg532525 points1y ago
the training one is especially ridiculous imo. i’m sure union organizers have told y’all, but just so others on here know— it’s illegal for a company to make changes like this after a union has announced itself and filed for elections. the NLRB doesn’t have a lot of immediate power unfortunately, but it is an unfair labor practice (UPL) and can eventually work out in the union’s favor, so long as it doesn’t scare people off!
anon-latte-slinger3 points1y ago
I love this for them, they shut down a store organized enough to call for an election and then sent all of those baristas to other stores in the buffalo area. Big opportunity for the organizers even with all the pressure.
Carroto_21 points1y ago
Any way to bring the media’s attention? Clearly reporting to the district manager have done nothing. Nobody from the corporate gives a shit about the baristas.
These barista horror stories need to be heard… y’all are amazing people and no one deserves to be treated this way. I heard you all recently lost the mark outs?? Like, one cup of crafted latte is your one hour pay almost. Why the hell do they have to take mark outs from you? Do they have much to lose?
Im here reading about DM forcing pregnant Starbucks barista, who’s been barfing, to show up to work. This is unreal.
What’s up with the timer on your drive thru?? What do the corporate think you guys are, robots? This new system…it disgusts me.
I don’t want baristas to lose their jobs but I want Starbucks to get their ass whipped and be gone.
I’m a customer and I’m all in favor of you guys unionizing. But in all seriousness, how can I possibly help?
Material-Leg532518 points1y ago
if a store near you announces that they’re unionizing, go to that store and tell everyone there how excited you are that they’re unionizing, be sincere and interact with them. corporate will come down hard and try to break everyone there, but knowing customers are on our side can mitigate that!
anartistnamedjes [OP]4 points1y ago
Yes showing your support and being kind to baristas helps a lot!! I dont know how to bring it to media… maybe we should start a hashtag? #unionizestarbucks
frogsteam15 points1y ago
Supervisor here, and I agree. I think we should all start spreading awareness and raising the conversation in our stores. Getting the discussion going and possibly achieving a company wide consensus among partners, particularly across states and international lines, is exactly what we need to show solidarity and support for Buffalo, and just workers in general. Strikes are popping up everywhere. This is the right time imo
Signifikantotter12 points1y ago
They can not prevent you from this. $1to form a union, needing 30% support of coworkers. $1 and they have a $1in touch with a Union Organizer.
Allopathological11 points1y ago
Threatening you for voting to unionize is illegal. If they so much as hinted you would face retaliation you should go to the local labor board
anartistnamedjes [OP]6 points1y ago
Oooh they said “your relationship with starbucks will change” sounds like a threat to me.
Allopathological7 points1y ago
Managers these days have enjoyed having wage slaves for so long they literally do not know what they can and can’t do regarding unionization.
$1 on what your rights are as a worker considering unionizing.
Abaracadavera8 points1y ago
I hope this happens, and I hope it happens EVERYWHERE. There’s so many Starbucks, and it’s such a huge company, you guys seriously have the power to change this country. I work in coffee and I’m rooting for you all!
anartistnamedjes [OP]2 points1y ago
Thanks so much! We really need the support!
demac19973 points1y ago
Whats the letter!?
anartistnamedjes [OP]4 points1y ago
Ohhhh i have pictures? Idk if i can post them… should i?
Actual_Mortician4 points1y ago
Letter already posted in another thread, but as long as you are confident that your Reddit username is anonymous, go ahead and post again. The more that the fight can be broadcast will bring action.
Amazing_Self29291 points1y ago
Yes. Please we need to see what corporate says. It's all anonymous here.
almostdied_at7112 points1y ago
I mean first everyone should read the union laws in their state before "voting". If you've never been in a union, you'll be in for a big shock that not everything is peaches and cream.
SisterAndromeda20072 points1y ago
Can anyone give me the Facebook group for this movement?

I guess I just don't understand the need to unionize? Given the benefits, pay, and yearly raises. as a shift I make 17.07 before tips and maybe it's just my district but I have always been treated really well and the other stores in my district also have very good morale. If they want change that's great but why the union? it makes no sense to me so someone please elaborate!
chuckywucky3 points1y ago
Hey there, I too work in an area that is well staffed and has high morale. The area I work in also forces a pretty good wage (which honestly is probably the reason for the first sentence). So unionizing here isn't really necessary per se. Unfortunately, in most of the country, the pay is not as good as ours. Also, many (if not most) of the stores are understaffed. This causes a bad cycle: poor training - stressed and overworked (not hours worked necessarily, but just nonstop madness while at work) partners - then finally, people quiting, which of course takes us back to the beginning. Unfortunately corporate hasn't fixed this issue. They could increase pay to attract more workers, incentivize staying (pay raises, not referal programs please), lower expectations of window times or quality from their store managers (essentially admit, yes we are in fact a fast food restaurant now), decrease the variability in items and customizations, or even put into place standards like: no mobiles unless we are fully staffed.
There are of course many other things that could be done. The bottom line however, is that corporate has ignored the worsening conditions for years (pre-covid I will add), and instead have just been burning and turning employees. While many people have the option of just quiting and finding a different job, many don't have that luxury (the need for insurance is real).
So people unionize. Many don't care for unions. I personally have had a terrible experience with one, but they are effective at forcing employers to listen to their employees. Things might get better under a union, and they might not. But a union is better than what we are getting from corporate right now, which basically amounts to "Thank you for your hard work in these worsening conditions, higher work loads, more stress, and more responsibilities. In compensation will will give you a few days extra pay for helping us solve our staffing shortage we caused."
Legitimate-Leave-8772 points1y ago
ah I see now! I can see why they would want to unionize then. I hope this turns into change. where starbucks decides to increase pay for hourly partners, hopefully gives an HR position in each store for partners so it doesn't all fall on the manager. And gives more labor to stores in order to be properly staffed so that partners aren't constantly burned out and underpaid for the work they do. And I especially hope something changes to where customers are not allowed to constantly abuse and harass partners on the floor. As a shift I kick them out and will not tolerate it. but it is also acceptable in my district to do so.
