A message to Starbucks partners (employees) from Rossann Williams, evp, president North America
Dear Partners,
I am writing you today from Buffalo, NY where I have been connecting with partners, as I often do in my role around the country. I wanted to pause and check in as some of you have asked about three stores here that have petitioned to join a union called Workers United. I want to make sure you are hearing directly from us, and me personally, so you know our position and have the facts.
For context, I first came to Buffalo in early September to see for myself the working conditions and operational challenges our partners had shared with us. From what I have seen and heard, from both newer and tenured partners, it’s 100% clear that they have not had the Starbucks Experience that we work so hard to create for you, and all of our partners across the country. So, we are here to ensure that we can give them just that. Some stores are well supported, but there are serious gaps in too many other stores in this market that fall short of the Starbucks Experience and represent some of the most challenging conditions, over and above the everyday complexity COVID-19 has brought. We are working to deliver the Starbucks standard, with humility, care and urgency. This is what every partner deserves – the very best partner experience we can offer. Our local operations team is leading the work, with a focus on staffing, training (both in-store and at our two temporary training stores), and creating the store environment partners expect and deserve, while ensuring every local leader is dedicated to creating a safe and welcoming environment for our Buffalo partners. A team of regional operations, facilities, technology, PRO, Store Dev and support manager partners are on the ground to help too.
There are many changes happening to close the operational gaps, but even positive changes can take time for partners to adjust to, so I am personally trying to stay as close as I can while also overseeing North America and what’s important to all partners. I will continue to meet with as many partners as possible across Buffalo and around the country to be in service wherever I can. Being in the stores, working shoulder to shoulder, is the part of the job that brings me the most energy and has for my 17 years at Starbucks.
In terms of the three petitions, an election date has not yet been set. We have also asked the National Labor Relations Board to allow all partners in Buffalo stores to vote, instead of just three stores. As you know, Starbucks stores in a city or market are deeply interconnected – partners like to routinely work shifts in other stores, we transfer and promote partners between stores, we share inventory across the market, we operate under the same policies, and we share the same set of leaders. In fact, like other markets, nearly half of the partners in the Buffalo market have worked in multiple stores this past year. We believe rather than restricting the vote to three stores, all Buffalo store partners should vote because every partner’s voice matters, especially in an important decision that may affect them all.
In the meantime, we want to make sure our partners here in Buffalo know the facts and have a space to hear from us directly so they can make their own informed decision. We are hosting partner meetings so we can share information and partners can ask us questions – like what the vote actually decides, what collective bargaining entails, how a union works, and how to make the most of the benefits we already offer. And we want partners to know how unionizing would fundamentally change their direct relationship with Starbucks. We care deeply about our partners here in Buffalo, as we do in every market across the country, and we want to preserve our partner to partner relationship. While it is certainly our partners’ right to make their own decision – and one we fully respect – I do hope our partners will give us a chance as they make the best decision for themselves, their families and their fellow partners.
I want to be clear that our actions in Buffalo are not about whether we are pro-union or anti-union. It’s quite simply that we are pro-Starbucks partners. As you know, our heritage and culture are built on the belief that by working directly together as partners, we can build a different kind of company. We do that by listening, having real talk, and lifting one another up, always with Our Mission and Values at our core. It’s what I truly love most about Starbucks – and I know many of you do too. Every success we have ever achieved has been in direct partnership with one another – without an outside party between us.
Unfortunately, what I’ve seen and heard in the market shows we have partners who don’t feel the partnership we pride ourselves on having, which is heartbreaking to me. And truth be told, the operational challenges I described, like staffing, training, call outs, or repairing equipment, can only be solved by us, from within Starbucks. That responsibility, along with the responsibility to offer even part-time workers our total pay and benefits package and COVID benefits are uniquely Starbucks to own. So, we are asking partners to vote “no” to a union – not because we’re opposed to unions but because we believe we will best enhance our partnership and advance the operational changes together in a direct relationship.
I know some of these operational gaps are not unique to Buffalo. As I shared in my message to you a few weeks ago, the pandemic has fundamentally changed our jobs and partners are navigating more complexity than ever imaginable. I want you to know that across the country, we will continue to make the investments we need to ensure an elevated Starbucks Experience, just as we have this last year – like accelerating wage investments, investing in cold beverage labor, fixing and innovating equipment and technology in stores, repurposing 40 stores around the country for new partner training, expanding referral bonuses, adding hourly recruiting specialists and more. Ensuring your care and safety remains the top priority. And with that, continuing our direct conversations as partners. Our only goal is that you feel safe, supported and truly LOVE what you do at Starbucks. You deserve that and more!
I often hear stories of incredible strength and resilience from partners, and I can say with conviction that there is no situation, pandemic or otherwise, that can shake the heart and soul of our company. We are not perfect – we make mistakes, we stumble – but we listen, grow together and take action. This work doesn’t happen in a boardroom in Seattle – it starts with open and honest conversations, in stores – learning, asking what’s possible, and committing to making ourselves, and our company, better.
Thank you for taking time to read this message as I felt the details were important to share. I will continue to check in. Thank you for your partnership, and thank you for standing with Starbucks.
They're shaking in their boots about the big bad scary unions lol. Wishing the best of luck to any buffalo baristas unionizing, if you can do it, we can. All it takes is one domino for the whole thing to fall into place
mulderufo13240 points1y ago
She really said a whole lot of nothing. This read word for word corporate vomit
ryannmm570 points1y ago
thank god i’m not the only one who was like ok. those words do make a sentence. yep. they do. and?😂
SunBusiness829139 points1y ago
You could read every third word and still get the (non)message.
Muva-Spooks5 points1y ago
Was there a tldr causeeeeeee it was too long, I didn’t get past the second paragraph.
haydensidun232 points1y ago
This sounds like a my learning module
MawcDrums166 points1y ago
What a slimeball. This reads like a supervillain wrote it.
PleaseKillMeAt12 [OP]21 points1y ago
Well she trys
gavinatoristhatyou40 points1y ago
to make money
UBonFeet164 points1y ago
She really does not understand that the real “partners” are the baristas and shift managers. Every single person above us benefits from the work we put in every single day 7 days a week. This corporation is too big for her to actually care about every single “partner” she doesn’t care. I hate how she really put “expanding referral bonuses” like if that’s really what we need. It’s basically a bribe.
rosallia26 points1y ago
Yeah how about pay us way more
amalia13lightning12 points1y ago
right. instead of trying to bribe new partners into joining the cult, why don't we keep the ones we already have??
general0rgana11 points1y ago
LOL I never got a referral bonus for someone who is now a full time coworker
edit: if anyone actually knows what I can do about this or if it’s not possible pls lmk
Lucent-Singularity5 points1y ago
Just let your SM know! I talked to mine about my referral bonus for getting my friend to apply/work here, she said all she has to do is literally push a button to make it happen haha
MawcDrums1 points1y ago
I've missed out on probably 5-7 training bonuses over the years. Was always told it'd be taken care of, never saw the money, got fed up asking about it.
omaha-mike-golf150 points1y ago
“It’s not about pro- or anti-union”
“We ask that you vote no”
Wow… I came in hoping for the best, to be utterly disappointed again. 293* wishing Buffalo the best of luck!!! If you guys do it, we can too!!
hgfdv63 points1y ago
Is she even allowed to ask for the employees to vote no? It feels like unionizing is a right and the employer shouldn't have any say in it.
miniinovaa25 points1y ago
I’ve heard that the pay the fine for that or whatever is worth it if the partners vote more. But idk for sure
Majestic-Cucumber5724 points1y ago
293* here as well! Really been considering leaving lately. the anxiety before every shifts, how draining it is for so little pay is just starting to not be worth. Hoping for the best for Buffalo partners!
omaha-mike-golf2 points1y ago
If it wasn’t for ASU, I would be long gone. Love my friends at work, and my management isn’t even bad, but the company policies and the customer attitudes even when I bring my nicest, cheeriest self… yeah, I’m leaving as soon as my bachelors is finished.
audiob1ood147 points1y ago
If Roseann was listening (She's not), she would be fighting for her "partners" who are working full time and aren't making enough money to sustain themselves or their families.
Stop paying us poverty wages and then trying to convince us that we are "partners" - we are cogs in your wheel.
kmoonster27 points1y ago
I can all but promise you corporate reads these threads, even if they do not respond.
audiob1ood57 points1y ago
Reading is not the same as listening.
They might hear us, but they are not LISTENING.
PleaseKillMeAt12 [OP]53 points1y ago
Oh they are listening but only if it's something they can use as cause for termination
kmoonster3 points1y ago
Monitoring might be the appropriate term.
j_delightful116 points1y ago
reads very gaslight gatekeep girlbossy tbh
MawcDrums3 points1y ago
For real, gives me Kyrsten Sinema vibes.
4filth111 points1y ago
anyway let’s unionize ❤️
rudebii100 points1y ago
Funny how all these executives got to work from their nice homes while y’all had to fend for yourselves against maskholes and now want to tell you how you’re better off not negotiating as a united front.
rudebii78 points1y ago
A message from Rossann Williams, filtered through multiple layers of PR flacks and lawyers.
Fuck off.
ceilw9947 points1y ago
Filtered through a law firm that is LITERALLY known for illegally union busting
rudebii24 points1y ago
I 100% promise dozens of people wrote and signed off on that letter.
CEOs rarely write their own shit, they sign off, maybe have a note or two.
Source: I’ve written and released CEO statements as a marketing/comm team member (after I left the siren).
looker00978 points1y ago
Complete bs letter from her.
violentfemme1767 points1y ago
As much as this is a sad attempt at discouraging partners from unionizing, it pleases me.
We’re organized, Starbucks corporate. We’re pissed. We deserve so much more than what you’ve been giving us.
And you’re scared.
roseshrub64 points1y ago
Ain’t it funny how she stated it was our personal decision to vote whatever we please only to turn around in two paragraphs later and have the audacity to demand us to vote “no”?
Fuck you, Rossann. Fuck you and fuck this company.
xUnfitToExistx-54 points1y ago
Remember that line when partners get fired for not getting the vax
MawcDrums1 points1y ago
Don't be so quick to assume that Starbucks is following COVID protocol. I had a coworker rip his mask off, tell one of our other baristas that covid is a lie and that she'll find out when she grows up (she's like 10 years older than him). He got sent home for that shift by the SSV, and was in working the next day like nothing happened with only a minor verbal warning (while chuckling and smiling in the back) from the SM.

Former 243* partner sending love to buffalo. Stay strong guys
sharkiemd56 points1y ago
fucking bullshit. all of it. if any buffalo partners are reading this right now, VOTE YES!!!! FUCK ROSSANN WILLIAMS
codysuxx51 points1y ago
Eat shit, Rossann!
of_pen_and_pencil47 points1y ago
“…connecting with partners, as I often do…” Raise your hand if you’ve never met Rossann even though she’s supposedly connecting with partners ✋
sailorgrumpycat4 points1y ago
Met Rosanne? Shit, i haven't even met my RM, and only met my DM like 3 times and I've been with the siren for 3 years.
DawnTheDaringDangers41 points1y ago
Former SM, so glad I left but I do wish I could help partners unionize in NY or wherever
ItzBoogieMan37 points1y ago
She can come to my store and order a venti cappuccino with extra foot up her ass
Ansony198036 points1y ago
Look like she’s was over-sugar coating how a Starbucks that only in make-believe stories happen. Please those days where Starbucks was a great coffee place to work for are highly gone when the original founder and CEO stepped down. Starbucks went over their heads in making profits not caring about their partners once places like McDonald’s, Dunkin’, stepped up to them in the coffee wars. This statement is a way to make you believe they’re gonna fix things and that they’d screwed up. it’s a typical desperate move so employees don’t unionize because they don’t wanna be seen like a bad company that has screwed over on their employees in the past.
mylegalusername34 points1y ago
The thing is if we can unionize, so many other retail marketplaces will hopefully follow. I feel like they only expanded the vote to water-down from the three stores that did want to unionize most. You know, where they’ve specifically been having mandatory anti-union meetings. How many partners do you think they’d bribe… near the end saying we hope you make the right choice for you and your family is basically saying voting no secures your job and yes we’ll fire you for something else. Mind you a yes, makes getting fired even in an at-will state much more difficult and not instant. I really hope we eventually all unionize and all get sales bonuses since we’re actually the ones running the stores and being the **face** of Starbucks. Working a 6th day as OT or living wage would be pretty nice too as the union fees literally pay for themselves in spades.
Jadenvicious131 points1y ago
You "care" enough to stop working from the protection of your home and get on the floor with all of us for 5 days a week? I didn't think so.
Abaracadavera26 points1y ago
“We are neither pro union or anti union…” ….but we don’t want you to be in a union…and we asked that the vote be for all Buffalo partners vote because it’s easier to get a “no,” even though they’ll all probably join afterwards…
RareLingonberry23 points1y ago
Notice how there wasn’t one new example of how they plan to make things better for partners. She just said “We’re gonna keep doing what we’ve already been doing which hasn’t made anything better for anyone so far”
miniinovaa23 points1y ago
Bruh. What bullshit. Just pay people a living wage
echowolf922 points1y ago
Reading this makes me so glad I quit
lewabwee19 points1y ago
If change comes from within and not from a union, which is bad because ???, then why did it take threats of a union to make you notice change needed to happen? Sounds to me like the union is already helping and there isn’t even one yet.
Georgiefight19 points1y ago
“Rossann- Rossannnn all she wanna do is *bust my union*
Goddamn, Rossann- *Corporate doesn’t care and this proves it*”
What an absolute load.
“*We are pro Partners*” we’re not gonna pay you enough to live, offer you livable benefits and yes we’re taking away your pandemic benefits but just know we really do need you.
Just please don’t vote for unions uwu, that doesn’t help our bonuses- I mean bonuses- I mean bonuses I mean- fellow partners. Only us, your corporate friends can really help you.
Do they really think they can gaslight us?
JustAnotherUBStudent16 points1y ago
Barista from one of the stores unionizing here! Obviously won't say for safety but yes. We've seen corporate almost every week at our store and our store is getting closed down on the regular so baristas can attend "voluntary" discussions that are anti-union. They come into our store and leave anti-union paperwork hung up all throughout our backroom. It honestly sounds like the start of a shitty dystopian novel
Fozzybean6 points1y ago
What do the papers say specifically?
JustAnotherUBStudent1 points1y ago
I can give more specifics later but it's mainly how we are giving away all our rights if we vote yes and how it is essential that we vote no
MawcDrums2 points1y ago
LOL god. It's so dishonest it's disgusting. They're worried because we'll be giving away THEIR right to treat us like trash.
jazzysoranio15 points1y ago
1. I do honestly believe that she believes what she wrote.
2. Too little, too late. If we have to resort to organizing a union to get them to finally pay attention, after YEARS of sweeping our concerns under the rug, then you know that once this blows over and we all forget it ever happened they’ll go back to their comfortable offices and wait for the next scandal. This union vote is making national news and that’s the ONLY thing, after years of ignoring us dirty peasant workers that got them to actually visit a store and talk to “insert barista’s name.”
“…see for myself the working conditions and operational challenges our partners had shared with us.” If you hadn’t seen it the past five years, you’re not gonna see it now. The problem isn’t that you just didn’t see the issue until now. The problem is that your heart won’t let you see what’s been in front of you the whole time, and threatening to unionize and take away some of your precious power and money is the only thing that spoke to you and the rest of corporate. It’s the only thing after years of bringing up our issues that motivated them to actually see what’s up. The fact that you only responded positively when a union was part of the equation is the proof that a union is the only answer now. It didn’t have to be this way. I would have rather fixed this without dragging unionizing into this, but this was the only option we had left. We trusted Starbucks to make good on the things they promised us.
BabeLincoln42013 points1y ago
get a load of these barnacles
okayteenay12 points1y ago
Former SM here (a 109….): this is the exact same bs that was said back 20 years ago. It will never get better. Please vote union. If they really wanted to make things better, they would have done so. Don’t buy into this corporate double-speak. Enough is enough of this crap. I feel for you all. Good luck!
HappyMelonGirl11 points1y ago
Rosanne, dearest, literally go choke on a Frappuccino. 😂 All our great successes came from partner to partner???? Have you considered that being because you all have fired anyone mentioning a union all these years?
Brief_Coat652611 points1y ago
Union busting!!!!
Millerboycls099 points1y ago
Someone who is really pro-starbucks partner would be pro union.
sh0werrod8 points1y ago
Lmao that part about how they’re gonna focus on hiring more people and training more people?? That’s not what we’re protesting dude we want a liveable wage
SunBusiness82917 points1y ago
It IS about a union, because Starbucks allowed it to go too far. No faith.
goodtombs6 points1y ago
We’re not pro or anti-union but pwease baristas, dont unionize, because if you do, maybe the rest of our underlings will want to be treated with a modicum of respect as well 🥺
This is a joke. Your only goal is for me to feel safe, supported, and love my job? I’ve been put in personal danger multiple times by customers and my higher ups. I’ve had shift supervisors nit pick every customer interaction I had until I HATED being on pos or concierge because I began overthinking every connection I made, I’ve fully closed a store by myself surrounded by untrained green beans being lead by a clueless SSV. Starbucks is a hellhole of a company and they want to be patted on the back. Admit you’re a fast food chain and move on, stop trying to push this idea that they’re little local coffee shops where the barista gives a shit about you. McDonalds doesn’t push this whole ‘make the moment right’ idea so why does Starbucks continue to despite beings as big of a chain as them. The second they decided to become even a national coffee chain they gave up the ability to be both the ‘third place’ and a place where you can get a heart attack in a cup in under 5 minutes.
I stay on this subreddit so I can bitch about the trauma working at Starbucks (twice), gave me.
stratamaniac5 points1y ago
You are waaaaaaay better off with union. That’s why the bosses don’t want them.
Unfair-Pool6234 points1y ago
Vote “yes” Buffalo!!
1partwitch4 points1y ago
“So, we are asking partners to vote “no” to a union – not because we’re opposed to unions but because we believe we will best enhance our partnership and advance the operational changes together in a direct relationship.”
Um. The complaints about Starbucks are not new, and corporate is more than aware. I worked at Starbucks from 2010-2014 and it was the same terrible conditions. If they cared about employees they would have made impactful change by now.
OC752163 points1y ago
Lol they never understood what “partners” are going through. How many are hostage to the Siren for medical insurance. Struggling to get the required benefit working 20 hours per week. How SM guilt them for missing work due illnesses or family emergencies. I support them to unionize.
mama_bibi3 points1y ago
For the love of God vote yes. Im not in NY but I've been following this union stuff for a while now before it was actually put into action and if they get the vote than more places will follow suit. Vote yes
AverageHoarder3 points1y ago
Translation- "Change nothing and have no one fight for you, and Starbucks will treat you like a person. This time. Honest."
moon_light5233 points1y ago
I mean, if they really cared about their partners than they would change the things people have been saying they want changed. They wouldn’t *need* a union if there weren’t issues and it doesn’t seem as though they’re actually going to change anything. The only way to show they will is if they show through action.
[deleted]3 points1y ago
The run around with this one!! Wow!
IMO the “Starbucks Experience” is a long gone opportunity; Covid-19 changed hospitality and restaurants forever. It’s too busy, too high-pressure and intentionally understaffed…
Better pay. Better staff. Listening. Acting. Why do corps make it so hard?
Mr_rhasophy-mew2 points1y ago
At this point I'm cheering for unionization 👍🏾. why does it sounds like a mustache villain wrote this🤔?
drowninginristretto2 points1y ago
We’re not pro or anti union, we’re pro Starbucks 🙄🙄
wcfullofwoe2 points1y ago
I hope all the Buffalo partners vote, and I especially hope they vote "yes". Fuck corporate.
scJazz2 points1y ago
What conditions caused this in Buffalo?
MawcDrums2 points1y ago
The same conditions that are happening everywhere I'd imagine. Insanely lean staffing leading to massive backups of customers waiting for drinks from an extremely overworked few people behind the counter, being swarmed by aggressive yellow jackets while working instead of Sbucks putting up traps around the properties, extremely loud equipment constantly in use with zero hearing protection, super slippery floors and no non-slip shoes provided, putting so many tasks on 2-3 closers and expecting them to finish it all in 30 minutes, last minute ordering making it so we're constantly running out of products that aren't even affected by the supply shortage, the babying of customers who treat us like shit validating their behavior, etc.
bluelamp171 points1y ago
Fuck Rossann
allmailtothethief1 points1y ago
UNIONIZE is my plead to all Buffalo partners! We in other states will be watching with eager eyes and hoping you will make the pro-worker decision of a union!!!
Kittywizarrr1 points1y ago
Former 254* partner here. I’ve recently left Starbucks this years, mostly because my boss told me that, as a partner for two and a half years, I wasn’t meeting up to barista standard and I should look for a new job. They let me work until I could find a job, but being heavily cut on hours for almost a month when I had rent to pay was a stressful experience.
I put so much sweat and effort for this company and as soon as I couldn’t keep up with the demanding customers, hectic work environment, and COVID-19 changing literally everything, Starbucks considered me ineffective. I’m so thankful I’ve got a job now I actually enjoy and get better pay. All the baristas deserve better than what Starbucks is giving, and I hope the baristas in Buffalo vote “Yes”. It’ll be the start of a better future for retail workers and will tell corporate that treating us like assets for needy customers will not be tolerated.

violentfemme1724 points1y ago
Well that’s what union reps are for arent they? Negotiations. We’re not asking for a lot. And what they’re currently asking us for is to work like dogs, for a not living wage, and we’re hemorrhaging both new hires and long tenured partners. This is not the company I started working for, and quite frankly, used to love. I think it has the potential to be one of the greats again. I think that’s the biggest reason I haven’t left. I’m a 153. I want to love my company again. And I genuinely think that the best way for that to happen is to unionize. They’re not looking out for partners best interests anymore. We need to have bargaining power. We need to be able to take pride in calling ourselves partners. The current state of our company is a fucking joke.
nicathor10 points1y ago
Unions are very much not for any particular group, but I would argue 'career positions' are not high on the list of target groups needing unions. Unions started in factories to protect the thousands of employees from getting abused by their employers. Unions gave us weekends, better pay (for a time), breaks, and maximum hours per day among so much more. Today unions are most common in fields that require large numbers of people doing the same job (Boeing machinists, electricians, carpenters, bus drivers, screen writers, etc.) and it's remarkable that Starbucks has held off unionization as long as they have. One of the many slightly ironic things is Starbucks likes to do those little licensed stores inside grocery stores... and grocery workers are unionized while we aren't. Ugh.
clumsycalico9 points1y ago
Say you don’t understand unions without saying you don’t understand unions
Ordinary-Theory-82893 points1y ago
Unions aren’t for employee jobs? What are you on about. Literally every supermarket in my area the employees are part of a union.
PleaseKillMeAt12 [OP]2 points1y ago
I may be missing a few things on unions and exactly how they work.
But I believe that flexibility would depend on how the union contract is set up.
