Do I have the right to be annoyed? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by babyslothy003
Every time I have a night shift with this one supervisor, I always have a bad night. They always put me on Drive Thru Window (not a problem as I like practicing my weakest skill to become a better barista), however they always continuously babysit me and never let me learn how to sequence taking calls, charging customers for their order, giving customers their drinks/ necessities they need and getting food. I could ask the simplest question through the headset like,” (insert supervisor name here), do you know where the cookie crumble button is?”. Then either my supervisor would just take over or ask another barista to take the call/order. I do get because I’m the green bean they do sometimes have to support me; but, there’s a fine line between helping and straight up just doing it for you and never really being able to learn because of it. Today I just had enough, which is why I’m writing a post. After finishing my shift I waited for the friend I work together with so we could go home together. Obviously during my shift they (my supervisor and barista partners) babysat me again. But waiting in the back where the break room is, I overhear my supervisor complaining to the other baristas working on how a new partner and I can’t get the grip of things like the other new partner. I’m pretty sure the new partner and I have only been there for a least a month & is our first ever job.The other new partner that we are getting compared with has worked a customer service job before, which is why obviously the other new partner is better than us. They are well experienced. I wouldn’t be as annoyed if this were the first time this comparison has occurred. But it’s a constant thing, and at this point it’s kind of degrading—since the supervisor only acknowledges us when we’re doing our worst. I would try and talk to my supervisor to address my concerns but every-time I try they just blow off my concerns and justify their actions as just trying to help. Being seemingly the only one continuously babysat at window, at this point just makes me uncomfortable and messes me up. I know this is probably how working in customer service is, but it just lowkey frustrates me. Thank you for listening everyone.

Sometimes, the people who’ve been there for a while forget how hard it can be to remember stuff when they first started. I’ve heard older partners complain about newer ones, and I always try to remind them that, especially for the younger green beans, it’s their first job. “_____ always has to be told exactly what to do” “_____ not remembering something I already told them” etc like ITS THEIR FIRST JOB!!! Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be fine, they just might not understand that it’s unhelpful when they talk down to you. (That being said, sometimes I may accidentally just type in an order for a green bean and not explain it in depth if we are super busy…sorry lol.)

It's okay. The POS is very complicated. You do have the right to be annoyed, though.

Tips: hand out the first item as you take payment, if it's ready. (I like to do food first because it's faster for the customer to deal with.) Take payment. While cards run, hand out the rest of the order.

It's a challenge to learn to have two conversations at once. If you need to, take an order, then take a payment. Back and forth. It's 100% okay to ask somebody to wait at the box. "Hi, welcome, I'll be right with you" goes a long way.

I hope this helps.

I've had the biggest struggle on the POS and I was put there multiple times my first day. I've been in and out of the food industry and it's not my first gig but I'll STILL have trouble learning and remember everything especially at Starbucks. Don't ever feel bad if you don't know everything, you're still trying your best! Being a green bean is tough and I couldn't handle the customers at SB. They're all miserable, rude people.

Also if you're like me.. I made a study packet, index cards, just to try and remember the drinks and sizes- I was worried I'd get in the way of my coworkers so I wanted to do everything right. At the end of the day all of that wasn't even worth it... Starbucks is a HUGE company and I saw a comment below saying that "they are probably costing the business more than they are contributing"- is BS. This company does not and WILL NOT care about you. I've seen multiple comments from them like this and they lack massive emotional maturity.

Please don't stress over this job, it's not worth your mental health. We are all human and we don't live forever, so if you're able to.. enjoy whatever you have now!

At home, study as much as you can about the app, the register, the products, etc. Come in a bit early. Do jobs no one likes.

Everyone kind of sucks at their first job.

It’s the person’s first job. They are probably costing the business more than they are contributing. They want to be successful and are not being successful. If they spend 10 minutes a day reviewing, they will find themselves much more employable.

Right now, there are plenty of jobs, and you might counsel OP to move on. And employers do take advantage sometimes. But if they want to be successful, they will put in a bit of extra effort. and down the road, there are likely to be fewer jobs, this more competition.

It’s very hard to learn complicated things on the job, due to the many interruptions.

OR they could be trained properly and paid for it.
