Not an employee, but an avid Starbucks fan and my usual order is a grande Americano with almond milk. Isn’t the point of an Americano that it’s a full cup, rather than a shot like just espresso? I feel like your customer was crappy, I don’t think u did anything wrong.

Sounds like this person was just complaining to complain but I will say that I get pretty irritated when my americano is full to the brim (which has happened several times). I like to transfer it into a travel mug for work so it stays hot longer, and I’ve burned myself a few times after I take the lid off bc it is literally full to the top of the cup. When I worked at Starbucks the standard was 1/4” of space at the top — not sure if this is still supposed to be the rule or not.

I never filled any cup right to the rim because even with a lid they can toss out liquid from the sloshing of walking or driving. I always left just enough space (doesn’t take much) to prevent that.

it is. always leave 1/4 inch

You inform them that when you order an americano, the standard is no room. If they’d like room, they can request it either through the app or when ordering at the counter. The cafe partner should also always ask if someone wants room if they order coffee or an americano and hit the appropriate modifier.

I leave a little room-- same with hot teas. Spilling a drink made with 200 degree water is different than a drink made with 150 degree milk. But I'm talking a half inch, maybe. Not enough to make a difference like with your crazy lady today...

With customers like this I always just want to grab the iPad and just start showing them the recipe cards

I leave a little room so that it doesn’t accidentally splash out
If the lid. But it’s not a lot. Like 1/4 of an inch. Enough to keep people from being burned.

Lmao I handed my drive thru coworker an iced Americano I made and he just looks at me and is like "where's the water?".

I just put ice in and somehow forgot the water lmfaoo it was a long day.

I always ask if they want room for cream but if they don't ask for that then yes you fill it
