Cafe Bar Struggle 😓 (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Various_Ad_2972
I’m just here to rant. I finished my training last week which, in itself was very hectic because my trainer kept getting interrupted with other tasks as I guess we were short staffed so I was just kind of learning a bit of everything everyday but nothing cohesive. I really struggle with remembering how to make anything on the hot bar and it’s soooo frustrating 😓😓. Today I was put on cafe bar for the last two hours of my shift and it was horrible! I didn’t remember anything on hot bar and kept having to ask for help which I felt bad for even though the partner I was asking didn’t seem too annoyed. I was pretty much all over the place and was very slow which definitely pissed off a few customers! I’m pretty good with making Fraps and Refreshers I’m just rlly struggling with anything hot bar right now!! I only had a small amount of training on it and that was last Monday so it’s already been over a week and I just cried after I got home because I was so stressed out😭😭. Any tips are appreciated..

I made a cheat sheet on an index card! I keep it in my pocket. Also, when on my 10 or whatever, I look at either the recipe cards, or the drinks on the Starbucks app.

Wow, they put you on bar that quick??? My store usually waits at LEAST a month before putting people on bar, and even then they make sure to do it when it’s super slow so that the person doesn’t get overwhelmed. It’s important to give new partners time to learn the menu and the syrup/shot amounts. Not cool on their part…they’re not setting you up for success.

Yeah I was super surprised I thought at least a few weeks! Idk maybe it was just the shift lead trying to let me practice but honestly it was too much and it left me feeling veryyyy overwhelmed. I even told them I don’t know what I’m doing lol I literally didn’t even remember how to make a latte and messed up multiple drinks 🤦🏻‍♀️

Two hours is too long for your first time on bar. Not only that, but you should at least know the basics of the drinks beforehand. Why they put you on bar when you clearly weren’t ready to be (which is NOT YOUR FAULT, it takes a while to remember everything!) is beyond me.

That’s what I mean! I had more practice on bar today and still I struggled but I think I did a lot better. Still had to ask a lot of questions tho, and then of course our mocha somehow explodes all over the bar and we spend like 30 mins cleaning everything while the cafe was full of people waiting on their drinks from me and I was…stressed. And then the lead had somebody come help me and she basically took over to get all the drinks out but everyone was kind of stressed out so I understand bc I was extremely stressed. Literally right before I clocked out like 8 stickers came out and luckily I was able to leave when someone took over for me 😥😓

Hey! I’ve only been with sb for a few months but I know how you feel! You can look at recipe cards but it will only go so far. My solution is just to keep practicing. Don’t be afraid to ask questions because if you ask a question and make a good drink you’re doing better for everyone by not setting back a whole drink. And if you mess something up don’t worry because even veterans make mistakes. It’s a learning experience and I am just now starting to n it have to ask any questions. It will take a while to get acclimated. Find a good stress reliever if you can! And remember: the customers can wait. As long as you’re working hard and trying your best, you should be in good shape. Good luck!
