connecting with customers/building social confidence (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by TrueFondue
hello i’m a new hire (got hired in August)

i was wondering if anyone had any good tips with building up connections with customers, so far i’ve been doing pretty okay and have gotten good compliments from both coworkers and customers, i just wanna continue to improve more! (since developing social skills will also help with other things in my life)

compliment their clothes or accessories, remember names, and smile! seriously people are cold to service ppl bc we’re like NPC’s to them but if you just stand out in a friendly way, they let their guard down most of the time.

Many of our baristas know the regulars very well and will start their usual drinks as they walk in the door, or even when they see them walking up to the store.

"Any big plans for the day?"
"Are you just heading to work or just getting off work?" (Morning only lol) which then becomes "Oh cool, what do you do?"

Also just complimenting something you genuinely like on the person, like noticing their new nails, their cool tattoo, or a bag you really like. Try to get them to talk about it because if they happen to have it on them, there's a story behind it. ("Yeah I just got my nails done, actually!" or "I got this purse for my birthday from my mom" or "This tattoo means a lot to me because..." etc)

Don't force anything. Stuff like this will become more natural as you get the "feel" for people tbh. This is what works for me, but just say the things you feel are right :)
