It finally happened (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by hhggggff
I finally had my drink paid for in the line at Starbucks. And I ended that pay it forward line without hesitation lol

How do we nicely tell people to stop doing this 💀

I had some dude hand me a 20$ and told me to use it on the people behind him until it was gone. When he pulled away I put it in the tip jar lol.

This is the way.
silentwhisperer1484 12 points 1y ago
lmaooooo this has me cracking up
t3llm3m0re 2 points 1y ago
Definitely have done that before
Ristrettooo 135 points 1y ago
If you’re on DTR you can end a pay it forward chain anytime by telling a customer that the person behind them had a mobile order
Ashesremindme 71 points 1y ago
I always worry that they know the person behind them and will know I'm lying if I do this (plus mobile orders have been turned off at my store for a long time now), so I just say "your order has already been taken care of, so you're all set!" and it works just as well.

this has happened to me before. I told the customer that the person behind him had a mobile and he looked at me weird, turned out they knew each other and were meeting for lunch :/
t3llm3m0re 1 points 1y ago
You could also say they want to use stars
HamburgIar_ 60 points 1y ago
Tell the customer you took care of them today. You more often than not will get a tip.
Roarkshop 50 points 1y ago
This is my go to. "Your breakfast was on me today!" Because fuck'em that's why.
Purple-Construction2 58 points 1y ago
I tell customers that the customer behind them wants to redeem stars.

i work for a slower store and one lady comes and orders like $30 in drinks, says she wants to pay for the car behind her (who JUST pulled up to the speaker) so instead of getting her drinks to her, i had to wait for the next car to finish ordering (they also had like a $20 order) asked if she still wanted to pay for it and she did no hesitation. she was a sweet lady and we were slow but it’s just still so irritating and confusing for our end
victorious_gem 22 points 1y ago
I tell customers it's on me today lmaooo 🤣 just to see if they'll tip
Hawkeye336699 18 points 1y ago
Lol I always disliked when the pay it forward happened in drive thru.
nervousextrovert 13 points 1y ago
I tell them that their orders been paid for and add a very cheerful “BYE!” And then I get the next drinks in queue so they don’t try to pay for the next one
Js_On_My_Yeet 12 points 1y ago
I just let them know that the person paid for their order/drink and say have a nice day. And if they insist on paying for the person behind them (instead of tipping us) that's when I say they have a mobile order. 90% of the time it works everytime lol
RobotProphetWrites 12 points 1y ago
I never had a problem with this while working the window. When it happens I just pay attention and print reciepts to keep track but it's not that hard. I think it's really cool for ppl to bless each other.
FairProfessional0 5 points 1y ago
Same here. People are saying the issues with it are for confusion and speed, but I don’t find that it takes much of my brain power to keep up with clearing the screen and remembering who has paid. As far as speed, there’s still going to be another transaction eventually, it’s just getting it done in one car space. Most pay it forward people use the app or their card anyway, which is typically around a 10 second process.

The only potential problem I would have with pay it forward is that the people are doing it performatively and/or without financial regard for us baristas. But at the end of the day that’s their choice and it doesn’t really affect how I do my job.
Ordinary-Theory-8289 1 points 1y ago
Nobody is getting blessed if you’re still paying for the next persons coffee anyway.
ryzzostar 6 points 1y ago
The last time someone gave me cash to pay for the person behind them, as soon as they drove away I put the cash in the tip jar...honestly no...you didn't tip, that's your tip bruh...sorry not sorry.

As a former barista. Why the hate on this?
dirteanne 8 points 1y ago
I don't hate it personally, but I think it irks a lot of people because it messes up the drink order, or makes customers feel obligated to cover an order that may be more expensive than what they got. Also a lot of people find it to be more of a performative gesture when everyone at Starbucks is already there because they can afford it, but will pay it forward instead of tipping.

Heroic‼️‼️

Why would you not continue the pay it forward?
Ristrettooo 24 points 1y ago
Usually at least one of these reasons:
- Harder for newer partners to keep track; gives them more stress and makes it more likely they’ll hand out the wrong item by mistake
- We’re under a lot of pressure to keep the line moving as fast as possible and a pay-it-forward chain slows the line significantly
- Customers feel a social pressure to pay for the car behind them, which is awkward if the car behind them has a more expensive order
- People who pay it forward tend not to tip

Personally if someone asks me to pay for the car behind them, I’ll do it. Then those two people’s days will get a little better. I just don’t want to keep a chain going because it slows everything down and that’s a big no-no

[deleted] 1 points 1y ago

MochiMasu 1 points 1y ago
