i’m still kind of new @ sbux. and i’m just starting to feel the EXHAUSTION that comes with this job. i’m mentally and physically drained to the point where it makes me sad. how do u guys deal w this😭
designated-grapes 84 points 1y ago
I joke around about never getting any sleep (I open the store 5 days a week and don't go to bed til midnight because of school full time) whenever I can and laugh at myself. That's the only way to survive tbh LOL

It's weird because I didn't realize how hard this job is on your body, mind, and soul, until a few months in and it's been down hill since LOL 😭😭😭

Naps dog. Anywhere you can fit them in
coldcatsoup 13 points 1y ago
I second this
Aliciarox11189 5 points 1y ago
I just nap -- sleep not so much.
CatVietnamFlashBack 36 points 1y ago
I've been with the company going on five years and I'm starting to get burnt out. The healthcare keeps me here like a prisoner.
StarbieBarista88 7 points 1y ago
This. So much. 😭

I'm almost 7 years in, and I feel this in my soul friend. <3 starbuddy

Few-Tax-1647 3 points 1y ago
Are you spying on me because this is my exact break routine
Haunting-Sink3063 1 points 1y ago
Haha I literally do this every shift!! So happy to know I’m not alone!!!
sofso 27 points 1y ago
well i TRIED to cut down my hours (but then my manager increased them, and then increased them again after that). mostly i just pet my dog for five minutes and pretend everything’s okay :’)
ashley0927 20 points 1y ago
I just started a few weeks ago and my shifts are always 5 days a week. I have school as well, but I feel like I’m ALWAYS working. I get it… The days that I work I try to stay productive and do school work or any errands I need to do on that same day so that my days off are just spent relaxing or doing what I want.
Haunting-Sink3063 16 points 1y ago
I go cry in the back…honestly. SBux offers Lyra which can help. I work 9-5 mon-Friday and by Friday I can barely move from being so sore. But try to rest as much as you can… or cut some of your days back so you don’t feel so drained. Maybe try switching positions like if you’re on bar and it’s too much, see if you can switch to front for a bit. I know bar and CS can take a toll on your body if you do it too much.

I would literally kill for a consistent work schedule. It amazes me that you're lucky enough to have a consistent schedule. The constant change in sleep pattern is what gets me. If I were to put this as my availability I wouldn't have enough hours scheduled to feed my family and pay bills.
Haunting-Sink3063 2 points 1y ago
I understand that, Fortunately I have an SM who tries to work with everyone. My schedule hasnt always been consistent like it is, It took a long time for me to be able to get a set schedule. I had to talk with my SM due to the issue of not having time with my 2.5 year old but still needing enough hours to provide. She agreed because they didn’t want to lose me.
ilholtstilin 15 points 1y ago
Get really good at CS; it’s not as intense as the customer-facing positions, it’s (IMO) the most important position, and if you can do it reasonably well without needing constant guidance, you’ll get put there often enough that those times feel like a break.
ThankfulWonderful 8 points 1y ago
This is a hot tip!!!! Getting good at CS and being a barista trainer are great ways to improve the store environment and maybe feel less exhausted because of the switch ups in routine
Always-Livn2Learn 2 points 1y ago
Amen to that! Love CS!
poulson107 10 points 1y ago
Coworkers. I would have quit a long time ago if I didn't have such a great group. A lot of baristas and shift unfortunately bring their personal issues and toxic traits to work. If you can avoid em you'll be gold.

Lyra :)

Cut down your hours (not saying a lot, maybe work 80% of your regular shifts and make one of your shifts a later start/earlier leave time) and take at least 2 days off in a row if you can from work. I find taking one day off at a time with my availability did nothing for me and I felt like I had no time off if I only took let’s say Tuesday’s and Saturday’s off. Also, try and work a Saturday or a Sunday - not both. Having the whole day will make you feel more relaxed as supposed to working the same day you have a class. Dedicate some time to yourself and your family. And remember, it’s just a part-time job serving coffee. Don’t stress too hard! Think about if it were you in line waiting for a coffee. If it takes a bit longer, and there’s some errors with your order, it’s not the end of the world! I just do what I can and do my best. We’re only human :)

Antidepressants are the only thing that helped me with my depression and anxiety, tbh.

Give me a call in 10 years… though I might be dead from exhaustion lol
AccomplishedCut4784 2 points 1y ago
I started about 3-4 weeks ago and wanted to breakdown crying SO many times. Also my coworkers are so passive aggressive it sucks
shiftyclub 2 points 1y ago
i’ve worked consistently 5am-130pm 5 days a week for months. i drive a long while to work so i have to be up at 3:45am and don’t get home till near 3. it’s gotten to the point where i’ll get home, sleep until about 7, savor a few hours for myself to eat and do some chores and be a normal person, then back to sleep from 12-345. i don’t have nights of sleep anymore i’m just running on a couple chunky naps a day.
SilverXiao 1 points 1y ago
Taking chunky naps like that can be beneficial for you. Look up biphasic sleep. If I ever get moved to open that's exactly what I'm gonna do.
lily-amber 1 points 1y ago
I binge eat oreos and dream about quitting.
Hazel_is_Trans 1 points 1y ago
I mean I just started but you should probably use the 10 company paid therapist appointment
lilcherry02 1 points 1y ago
I nap on my lunch, nap 20 minutes after work, nap anywhere you can really
UnknownArtist_3333 1 points 1y ago
I cry about it, go on TikTok, and repeat.
maggievestal 1 points 1y ago
i took two weeks off and debating quitting.
my new boss SUCKS and i’m sooo tired.

get some rest and meditate/yoga. dead serious.
metrokid_98 1 points 1y ago
Take naps even if it’s for an hour or two. Also use the headspace premium benefit. It takes some time to work it in to your life but even a short meditation can help. Take care of yourself and do things that you love. Gotta rest up for the holidays :)
4shotsin 1 points 1y ago
Same. Open 5 days a week, online classes, work from home, wife, dogs, cat, family... benefits holding me hostage. Especially now that I make the same as a green bean. Guess we should be happy we got a "raise", even if it's not enough to live on or attract new partners. 🤦‍♂️
Piper_riley27 1 points 1y ago
Honestly I worked so much in the summer I felt so drained that I took a few days off of my availability. You might want to try that for bit.
FarTie8802 1 points 1y ago
is my manager allowed to refuse me taking a full day out of my availability
Piper_riley27 1 points 1y ago
They can but Normally they are willing to shift around your availability. The only time they normally refuse if you ask for more than one weekend day off. They normally will let you pick one weekend day off and the weekday is free game. Unless you guys are severely understaffed there should be no problem. From my experience at least
