“It’s a privacy violation to ask for my name” (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Jkoochie
You know, with COVID and all the anti-maskers and what not, there is a certain type of person I expect to throw a tantrum at me when working out register. I was in no way prepared for the snark that came from a woman my grandmothers age.

To preface this, we’re the busiest store in our district, with probably the shittiest set up behind the bar (very narrow, makes it impossible to do things without running into everyone behind the bar). Saturdays have just been pure evil for the past month or so. With all the changes Starbucks is doing, many of our employees were tenured and were going to get screwed over by the pay change. I don’t blame them one bit for leaving! Unfortunately our new manager didn’t quite account for that I guess? I’m not sure. But saturdays have just been hell. We had 3 people call in sick and one had to leave early when she got sick… cool.

Anyways, we had to shut mobile off because we were so short staffed-and this happened right about the time we shut it off so we were still playing catch up but we were getting there.

A nice looking older woman with her CPA mask on approaches the register, orders her drink, then says “and I’ll be down at the end to wait for it” (yeah lady, where the other 15 people are waiting for their orders)

Me: “great! You’re total is going to be X. Can I get a name for the order?”

Woman: [face turns to a scowl, pulls down her mask] “Benjamin” (changed the name for privacy and whatnot)

Me: “alright Benjamin, we’ll have that out to—“

Woman: “you know it’s a privacy violation to ask me for my name”

Me: “well it doesn’t have to be your real name. It’s just the name for them to call out when your order is rea—“

Woman: “well you shouldn’t be invading my privacy asking my name and—-“ (my brain shut off so I don’t know what else she said

Me: “maam, I assure you that we are only asking for a name for the drink order. As you can see there is a number of people waiting and this helps to ensure every one gets the items they ordered. We are in no way using your name for any other purpose. They should have your drink out momentarily. Thank you have a nice day”

Not even 2 full minutes later (still taking the order of the people behind her) she butts in and demands to know where her drink was. Politely told her that she did just order and there are clearly others waiting as well and it will be out as soon as possible.

And YES she did give me a definitely male name, which could have been her name, whatever! I don’t care. But why give you a name and THEN bitch about me asking for it?

Also, do you like never meet anyone new? And when they introduce themselves to you, you throw that at them?!

Like I said, I expect the turd buckets about the masks. But I’m invading your privacy by asking for your name?l

Lady, I have some devastating information to tell you about what your smartphone is doing with your information… 🥴

I would have fully YELLED Benjamin. And then also clarified it with a suspicious look

"you're Benjamin?"

"yes"

"alright......." 👀

Cringing at this because I have very sweet regulars named Kyle and Mackenzie -- Kyle is a very sweet girl and Mackenzie is a very nice man. I've learned to never ever assume the gender of a person by their name.

Obviously, but the lady OP is talking about was clearly just pulling a name out of her arse

the hand-off person likely would not know that

Ooh yeah, I guess in bigger stores? My store is really small so usually while I'm making drinks, I have an ear on what's happening on till. It means I can start drinks while the customer is still at the till, and if the person on till makes any mistakes I can catch that as well.

So I would hear that conversation and then I'd know to be a *dick* at handoff

Ah I wish! I was still on register taking orders. I was happy to see her gone lol
