Never feel bad about asking questions, it is better for you to feel confident about what you're making. All of us were in the same spot once too, asking a million questions and feeling in the way.

Also you can always take the recipe ring book onto the floor as a backup reference guide. They say this job takes a good 4-6 months to truly feel it click smoothly, and the fact that you're studying recipes at all is really awesome! You'll start seeing how similar the amount of pumps, milks etc are for almost every drink.

thank you so much, this is reassuring. it’s just a little humiliating running around finding someone to answer my questions. but i know everyone has been there at one point.

is it normal for them to only ever have me on CS/front so far…? the entire day? sometimes i just feel like they want me out of the way

It is so normal. I've been a partner for years now, but when I started they stuck the green beans at pos or drive window for mooonths before they ever got put in a bar position. It seems like that has changed a lot though since most stores seem to be all newer partners.

It gets old being on front, but it pays off since it'll familiarize you with all of the drinks and if you look on the right side of the screen it shows the drink recipes and the proper way to mark cups for each drink. Same with CS, if you learn how to cadence well and are a strong CS everyone will love you! Also both positions are great for learning how to prep and properly date everything.

When you're new you'll feel awkward and in the way, especially with how short staffed and crazy most stores are now. That's why they may stick you on dishes or some out of the way position, don't take it too personal. Definitely take the initiative though, ask at the beginning of your shift if you can get some bar practice time when it slows down or if you can be put in a bar support position.

this has put like, at least a week’s worth of stress to rest lol, thank you. you are kind. i’m glad to know that everything i’m learning about is connected and will help me understand other areas! i’ve tried bar and honestly CS stresses me out even more, just because it takes initiative and when you’re still figuring out where everything is and what’s needed where you run around like a headless chicken… lmao

I'm glad I could help! You sound like you're doing great, and we've all been there and made a million mistakes.

i’m fairly new as well, just coming up on 2 months here. in my experience, it felt like too much to memorize because i was always like “holy shit there’s SO much to remember all at once”.

i think it’s easy to over complicate things because i often found myself thinking “what am i forgetting??” after already having finished all the steps (especially with fraps). overthinking every step slowed me down a lot which just led to more stress. once you start to remember the routines they really help!

and as far as asking questions goes, your fellow baristas would far rather answer a quick question or two than have to remake a whole drink or order.(speaking from experience lol)

in my store at least, its pretty common for newbies to be put mainly on drive-thru, warming or cs for their first few weeks. i think it’s to help get them acclimated to the pacing and environment so they’re not just thrown on bar and overwhelmed immediately. your play caller should slowly start giving you more bar time as you get used to it.

sorry for the whole big comment, i just get how you feel and wanted to let you know it gets easier relatively quickly!
