This shit is ridiculous. I'm sorry. You can't guarantee anything and if cross-contact will literally kill her, she shouldn't be at a Starbucks.

My exact thoughts when she was screaming at me lol like make your coffee at home then?? We have SIGNS in the store that say we cannot guarantee ANY food or beverage to be allergen free, it’s even on SB website.

Jokes on her steam wand touches allllll of it

Just learn from it ☹️
Sorry man. You did the right thing by telling her that nothing can be 100% sure of no cross contamination. The sticker thing was a little less than stellar, but I've made my good share of fuck ups.
On the bright side, atleast it's only the first time it's happened to you, and atleast they stopped it before it could've been bad. And you know for next time to double triple check
If you ever notice you forget to add something to an order, etc, pull stickers till you find the right one, then write in the correct shiz
Hope your shifts go better in the future 👍 love ya beanie

I personally would recommend against pulling someone else’s stickers when you’re not on bar. Making sure to let them know that so and so’s almond milk latte needs a clean pitcher and handing it to them is a better idea since it doesn’t interrupt your flow or the bar partner’s flow very much.

Thank you for your response. I have pulled stickers when I made mistakes at the register but then my coworkers get upset that I’m pulling more stickers out when they’re already backed up with drinks. Now I do know to triple check the Ask Me and communicate with the baristas on bar and I certainly won’t make this mistake again.

Shouldn't be a problem to pull more stickers. If anything it'll help them, if they've got a chai latte now, and get another chai latte, they could batch make them.
Some coworkers get hella stressed on bar and don't like people who pull. My store always pulls, it's needed for efficiency. But to each their own

she can fuck right off
yboold7 points1y ago
Honestly it’s not your fault. Idk why tf she even at a sb considering nothing is fully free of cross contamination. You already told her that it’s not 100% guaranteed. I’m a green bean myself and I’ve had my fair share of shit hole customers already.. they’re legit adult children throwing tantrums over goddamn sugar water and Starbucks continue to reward this revolting behavior
mattlawmel3 points1y ago
Yeah that’s my biggest issue with the company. “Make it right” honestly some people simply don’t deserve it. It’s costing us our sanity continuing to remake dozens of drinks and food items every shift. People fully take advantage of it and do it on purpose. We’re understaffed and backed up as it is.

just as a tip, we have a regular who has a dairy allergy and always gets her drink with almond milk, and while it’s true that we can’t guarantee there won’t be any cross-contamination, what we do for her is put the blender or pitcher or whatever we’re using to make her drink (she usually gets a frappe) through the sani for a bit and then don’t use that blender until we get to her drink. it’s not perfect and she understands that, but it does make her feel a lot better that we’re trying our best to reduce the chances of her having a reaction!I know it’s hard to do during a rush and we don’t rly HAVE to do that but hey, better than putting someone in the hospital and it’s good for customer connections as they see we’re trying our best to accommodate for them! so for next time, try going over to bar and informing them even if you forget to do the “ask me” option!
im sorry she was super rude to you about it though :( some people are just not understanding at all.
briannuzzi2 points1y ago
also by blender I don’t mean the WHOLE blender, I mean just the pitcher that we put IN the blender if that makes sense lmao. there’s not nearly enough time with the high volume my store has to sani the entire blender during a rush hahaha

don’t feel too bad. if she was really deathly allergic, she wouldn’t chance it lmfao. people are silly. she just wanted to be dramatic in front of everyone. don’t take it too seriously and just forget about it!! you’ll be better off. that lady has some behavioral issues clearly
kittzelmimi2 points1y ago
You are right that starbucks can't and doesn't guarantee complete protection from allergen cross-contamination. We can do our best to make reasonable accommodations (like using a new steaming pitcher), but honestly if she's really that "deathly allergic" she should take responsibility for herself and not order from a place that heavily features almond products. (i have a family member with a SEVERE food allergy, and if he's not sure about cross contamination at a place he just doesn't eat there. Yes businesses making accommodation is nice, but at the end of the day your life is in your own hands.)
As for advice, if something comes up like that again I would recommend saying something like "I'm still new, so I'm going to get someone to help me so I can make sure we get your order the way you want." The other baristas are most likely not as annoyed by your questions as you think, people just get don't have time to be gentle and fluffy with their communication when it's busy... but everyone WILL be annoyed by irrational customers throwing a tantrum (not annoyed AT you, but it makes for a grumpy atmosphere), so it's better to be really thorough with checking and double checking that you understand the order, even if it takes a few extra seconds, so you can hopefully avoid a meltdown before it starts.

It’s an honest mistake and your intention was in no way to kill her. It’s not your fault at all. I’d say in the future just do your best to be crystal clear with the customers and ask clarifying questions even if they feel stupid to ask.
