monitoring a heart issue without breaking food handlers guidelines? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by starsfade
like the title says, i need to monitor my heart. i would wear a watch of some sort, but i know that’s against food handlers guidelines (here in texas, at least). do any of you have any ideas? i know starbucks can make accommodations for certain things, but since this is a food handlers rule rather than a corporate rule, i’m not sure how to go about it! or if anyone happens to know how i could monitor my heart rate without wearing an apple watch/fitbit watch/etc, i would love suggestions!!

I have a friend who also has a heart condition and wears their smart watch at starbucks. We aren’t at the same store, so I’m not sure how they got this cleared or if it’s even a legit accommodation because of the reasons you’re saying, but it’s at least worth bringing up to your SM.

Idk if this is helpful, but I've read on other posts here that some people strap their apple watches to their ankles or on their upper arms hidden by their sleeves. Not sure how well it would fit but it's an option. As other commenter said, talking to your SM is the best option.

If you need to wear it all the time, an accommodation might be long gloves. We used them at chipotle when meat used to be marinated in store. They're gloves that just go...all the way up! You do need to contact corporate (your SM can give you the right department) about this though, and you might be able to through in extras, like extra breaks if you need a second because palpitations or something.

I have heard of a chest strap or wearing it on the ankle as means to monitor. If neither of those work then you need to go get an official doctors note stating you must monitor with a wrist worn device and start down the accommodation chain.
