What to expect? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Asleep-Strawberry716
I currently work at a Dairy Queen, and I hate it. The only thing I am allowed to do is ring up customers and give them their food, which depending on the day there can sometimes be hours without any customers. but the Starbucks across the street is always busy, and I have been a regular for 5 years. My friend from high school works there, and she said that it’s a super positive environment, and based on what she knows about me I would thrive there. I really want to apply, but I don’t want to be stuck doing one job. At Starbucks are you trained in all positions, like drive-through, register, and making drinks? I would want to be able to stay pretty busy and be able to help out where it was needed.

As long as you are persistent in wanting to do all positions they will definitely train you for it. It looks good that you’re dedicated to learning everything that would be expected of you because many people are not open to certain positions and will literally avoid them like the plague. Buuuuut on the other hand sometimes you have to make a case for yourself because Starbucks loves not giving new baristas bar time and then wondering why only one out of five people per shift will know how to do bar during a rush.

ive seen so many tiktok skits about bar time and no one knowing how to make drinks
Aly_Katt 2 points 1y ago
I recently left and one of the reasons was because of the training I received. They gave me not even an hour of bar time on either cold or hot, and all my shifts were just running food front and support. Despite asking for almost a year I didn’t even get an hour of training for bars.
venusiangirl 1 points 1y ago
that sounds horrendous. good on you for leaving because wtf is that
subaruforesters 16 points 1y ago
It depends on the store. Theoretically you would be trained on everything, but it took me 6 months at my store to do something besides register.
raptoraptorr 12 points 1y ago
Oh man if you don’t want to be stuck doing one job Starbucks is the place for you. At least my location on nights, everyone does everything. Also most shifts are pretty flexible so if you come in and see you’re marked down to be window and want to be cold bar instead you can just ask. One thing I will say about Starbucks is that you’re always busy so a 7hr/8hr shift feels like it just flys by sometimes. I really like to stay busy as well and have something to do with my time and this is a pretty good job for it

yes! The fact that the Dairy Queen and I work at is never busy drives even my general manager insane, her and I were joking earlier about crying in the walk in from boredom. I like things to be fast paced, and I can literally see the Starbucks out of the window of Dairy Queen, and it seems like they are always busy.

Definitely apply! They have an amazing 401k plan and free stocks that can be vested and cashed out. Plus Spotify premium!
Asleep-Strawberry716 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
what do you mean spotify premium? i’ve had that for years lol
raptoraptorr 5 points 1y ago
They give you Spotify premium for free when you become a partner haha one of the benefits I forget I have

I have a friend who used to work at DQ and switched to Starbucks. He loves it and is thriving!
Asleep-Strawberry716 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
i find it so funny that this is my exact situation
szn2episode3 6 points 1y ago
if you’re thinking about it, do it. starbucks isn’t as bad as reddit makes it out to be. i love working there :)!
sero5074 2 points 1y ago
Agree 100% :)!

Apply! It’s a nice job for those who like fast paced environments, granted everything has its downs but if the environment is good, then the job is good.. just don’t flip the Frappuccino’s upside down lmao
PeachGreenTea__ 4 points 1y ago
Apply, it can’t be worse. Be your own self advocate about working the different positions. You will probably start on warming/register and slowly trained in other areas depending on how busy they are. If your friend works there it might help the process go faster.

It’s easy to feel stuck doing the same thing each shift at Starbucks, but you really need to just speak up about it and asked to be moved. Even if you have to do that everyday.

at my store new partners only work the window or up front unless you work evenings (cause we’re always short handed at night) then you work whatever position is easier for you (the new partner) to handle
bitter-barista 2 points 1y ago
Hi friend. Nearly 7 year partner here. So here's the dealio. Working day shifts, you will likely get stuck on one position, probably register or warming. Because to get through peak (the busiest time of day) we need people where they are strongest, and it's not the time to teach newbies how to bar when 20+ people be waiting for their drinks. Working night shifts will get you more well rounded because we have less people at nights and everyone has to do a little bit of everything, and we have more time to teach stuff! I'm a closing supervisor for 4.5+ years, and I have had time to teach so many, so much on the night shift. Hope that helps give some perspective on the Starbucks situation. Best of luck!

Do it! Definitely think this sub skews negative, if you already know that the work environment you're going into will be good because of your friend, then go for it!! You may have to specifically ask for bar time, so wait until it's slow so you don't wind up gumming up the works. But along with all the corporate BS, it's also a super fun job.

You are trained on all positions! Some stores do have a reputation of keeping certain people in certain positions though if they really do well in said position or aren’t really good at other positions. We have several DT partners because they kind of suck at bar and/or complain about CS. I am almost always a bar partner because I’m really fast and accurate with my drinks. But not super frequently a DT partner because I am friendly with customers but not super great with prolonged customer interactions - I’m a big introvert and do not really enjoy humans other than my coworkers. But you should be trained on all positions. I do train on all positions every time. You may be stuck on DT or CS for a little while until you really prove yourself on bar. But more often than not, you’ll be allowed to do all positions and it can be changed up any time. If you aren’t liking where you’re put, most shifts will accommodate and let you try something else out. I have definitely gotten burnt out on certain positions and asked to move and have been moved.

I started about two months ago and I’ve been trained in every location except CS and dishes. I got pretty good pretty quick so they usually have me on hot/cold bar. I’m not mad about always being there cause I HATE the oven
Asleep-Strawberry716 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
what is CS?
coffeegirrrl 2 points 1y ago
Customer support
W33dprinxess 2 points 1y ago
I could be wrong but in my mind it’s crew support. They get things if we run out and stock things during rush. They’re an extra hand that’s trained everywhere that can help when needed
aldrif-odinsdottir 2 points 1y ago
Here's my experience with it:

I've been trained, to some extent, on most all positions in my store at this point (hot bar, cold bar, drive-through window, front register, warming, and CS).

I work mornings, though, so we're swamped through most of my shift; because of this, my shift managers usually have people planted to maximize efficiency, so I usually work the same position (window).

That said, the training I received wasn't very expensive, and I haven't gotten time in most positions, so I'm not very good at them; that, in turn, means I'm less likely to work them moving forward.
NervosaNervous 2 points 1y ago
If it’s possible, see if you can switch to nights. When I switched, I finally got time to bar and now I get put on bar nearly every shift, including the two mornings I work.

It depends on the store. My store is slightly understaffed. People call out often, and we’ve had some people out for covid. There were 4 new hires when I got hired, and only 2 of us were immediately trained on all positions. Me and the other green bean have been trained on customer support, drive-thru, mobile orders, and cafe register. I have been slowly trained on cold and hot bar. I get bar time maybe 2 hours for like 2 or 3 shifts in my week when I work 6-8 hour shifts. If i work a 5.50-5.75 shift, I will only do CS and drive. The other green bean hasn’t got any bar time yet. We were supposed to finish our training yesterday, but the ASM child had surgery that day. So hopefully we get to finish our training during a shift on the floor, or another day when the store is closed.

You seem to be hardworking with great personal morals and ethics. I would suggest applying, it wouldn’t hurt to work at starbies. The workplace culture depends on store and differes store to store. Mine is fantastic, like a family. We all love and support each other on a deeper level than just coworkers, we deeply care for one another. Our store, we say people first, money later. Yes, a paycheck is really nice. But if you don’t care for the people first, money is irrelevant. Customers can be rude and picky, yes. But its so satisfying to make a connection with someone, remember their order, and watch them become a happy regular that is part of the family. The benefits are also awesome.

Alot of people on this sub seem to be burnt out and hate working at starbies. Its up to you if you will make this a positive experience, or be bogged down and let your mental health hinder you. I see alot of partners on here with mental health issues and they talk about quitting bc of their mental health. I have mental health issues, but i have boundaries. I do not let them overwork me. I have a strong support system both at home and at work. I take time to advocate for myself and be assertive. I do not let my mental health be an excuse for me anymore, as i severely love working at starbies and enjoy every day i work there. I have so much fun. If i have a bad mental day, i leave it at home, but remind myself to give myself some grace and be honest with my partners.

My best advice would be, go for it and make it something amazing for you and the peoples lives you touch. I personally think this company is amazing, and i love working here. It does get redundant doing the same tasks every day, yes. But you learn something new every day, and teach someone something new. Its a great feeling.
