Is This The 5th Circle of Hell?!(self.starbucksbaristas)

Today a customer ordered a tall iced vanilla latte. So far, so good. Then they add, “I want a splash of 2% on the top”. That request gave me pause.
I tried to clarify, explaining the drink is made w 2% so does she want more milk? No, she wants a splash of 2% on the top. Gets angrier. At this point I’m staring at her like she was born yesterday, and she’s yelling to have a manager ring up her order “so it gets made right”.
Just amazed how many people drink lattes but don’t know what one is…
Ristrettooo179 points1y ago
There are so many times I wish I could say to a customer “before we continue I need you to tell me what you think your drink is”
[deleted] [OP]113 points1y ago
“I want a cold medium caramel coffee” *iced caramel macchiato somehow*
plushiequeenaspen63 points1y ago
One lady tried to order that tiktok WM at my licensed store, and she ordered it as the white mocha latte. She starts yelling at me about how the color isn't right, and I'm trying to figure out what she wants. She literally screams "NO COFFEE" in my face on front of the team lead, so I handed her a cup of milk with the syrup and drizzle.
She wanted an iced coffee.
howdudo22 points1y ago
honestly just do it. its not like you're going to get fired lol with a username like ristrettooo you are probably one of the top 4 most talented people there
dogsofwintergaming21 points1y ago
I kinda do that. Like if someone asks for an iced cappuccino, I ask if they want it more on the wet or dry side and if they say "what's that mean?" I ask them to describe what their drink usually is and then they describe a frappuccino and I explain the difference. Usually they get annoyed after a while but gotta make sure people know what they are actually ordering.
[deleted] [OP]8 points1y ago
they get soooo annoyed but we really do need to help and correct them 😪
the-OG-darkshrreder1 points1y ago
I want the iced one. Me: is it a cold brew or iced coffee? Oh iced coffee Me: are you sure? I can give samples No that’s okay. ~proceeds to order 5 Trenta iced coffees. This isn’t the drink i wanted…
philosopher_cat_lady1 points1y ago
Just say that
minty-hitler52 points1y ago
or my favorite when people order iced espressos and want a “splash” of milk then complain because it’s not filled to the top with milk
zosterthetoaster2415 points1y ago
I did this the other day with an iced espresso (filled to the top with milk) because we’d been getting complaints all day about the cup not being full. The one time I did it trying to preempt the complaints, this customer yelled at me for putting in too much milk. “What does a splash mean to you, huh?! Does it mean a whole cup full?! No! It means a splash!” Just kill me please.
minty-hitler13 points1y ago
Funny how that always happens especially when you’re trying to avoid any upset customers
zosterthetoaster246 points1y ago
That’s Murphy’s Law of customers: if you try to do something nice for a customer, said customer will inevitably lose their shit with you.
interyx2 points1y ago
That's when you pour milk to the bottom line and fill with ice. It looks full but it's 80% ice in there.

We have a regular who orders at venti iced caramel macchiato with EXTRA 99 caramel drizzle, EXTRA 2% milk, and EXTRA ice. Like? She gets so mad that there is never enough ice but how in the hell do you fit that in a venti? >:/
chuckywucky32 points1y ago
Maybe recommend getting a grande in a venti cup so she can get extra ice? But my guess is she is delusional and will believe she is getting cheated if you suggest that.
givemeapples-13 points1y ago
Maybe just 1 shot. And a trenta cup
Sdee123422 points1y ago
So you are the infamous "other" starbucks. I didnt think they actually existed
givemeapples-11 points1y ago
I figured all starbucks would wing something out to satisfy the customer. Is this not the case?
kqs1315 points1y ago
No we have a solid rule of no espresso drinks in trenta. No matter what the customer says.
[deleted] [OP]2 points1y ago
Well we’re not supposed to do trenta for espresso drinks and she doesn’t want to pay for the extra shot. We asked her if a grande in a venti would work for her and she refused :(
HippieinBlack26 points1y ago
Love it when customers think they know better then the barista 🙃🙃🙃
luvduvbunny25 points1y ago
So what exactly did the customer think was in the tall iced vanilla latte besides espresso, vanilla syrup, and ice? Did they think we don’t add milk or anything?
I had someone request that we heat up their sandwiches. Like do you really think we just give you cold/refrigerated sandwiches as the standard? The only time we ask if you want something heated are for some pastry items (ex. Brownie, scone).
[deleted] [OP]38 points1y ago
I tried to figure that out and she hit me w “I don’t know what I get”
As much as they stare behind the bar you’d think they’d know more!
romanianhopscotch21 points1y ago
“I don’t know what I get” is the most absurd thing to me it’s going IN your body and you don’t know what it is?!? Not even a little?!
maidofpuns13 points1y ago
I stg earlier this week I had a lady ask for a caramel macchiato. I grab a hot cup (we have to mark ours) and she suddenly realizes that she forgot to mention she wants it iced, but she goes "frozen." And I was like, "uhh so like a caramel macchiato frappuccino?" "Yep." "Okay just so you know, that drink doesn't really exist so I can do [suggestion] but it might be different from what you're used to." *Escalating volume* "What do you mean? I get that drink every day!!!" "Uhh...that drink isn't a menu item." "Okay...well I've never heard that before, just make what you said then." It dawns on me at this point that maybe she THOUGHT she said "iced" and not "frozen." "Did you mean you want an iced caramel macchiato?" *Exasperated* "YES." "Okay, well you SAID 'frozen' which is why I was confused." Basically she couldn't admit to it and this was in the middle of us being absolutely slammed all day because both corporate stores in town were closed and we were running a 3-person play in a Tarbucks with one espresso bar and one blender and one oven, so we were all a little tetchy.
plushiequeenaspen5 points1y ago
I think I've encountered this exact customer lol. Lady lost her head at my tarbux when we tried to explain that "caramel macchiato frappuccino" doesn't exist and tried to figure out what she actually wanted.

*woosaah* *woooosaaaaah*
Honey_girl_11 points1y ago
I had a customer order an Earl Grey with steamed breve and packets of stevia. Okay. I ring her up for a London fog, no vanilla, sub stevia & breve. She has a problem with her drink being $6.
BaristaWoosa5 points1y ago
Did she want the entire cup steamed breve??
AffectionateThroat641 points1y ago
I honestly would too lmao, it’s not the same thing and the vanilla in the London fog causes the price to be more expensive. So if you take out the vanilla it kinda defeats the whole purpose of the London fog. I’m passionate about my teas, don’t mind me 😩
Honey_girl_1 points1y ago
What gets me is that people think I’m a jerk for charging them that way but it’s not necessarily for the amount of milk they want- it’s for the extra labor & time it takes to make the beverage. I would have charged her for a venti earl grey with breve otherwise. (She did essentially ask for a London fog tho)
defendpoppunk7710 points1y ago
I had someone order an iced caramel macchiato with cream and sugar. I had to look them in the face and explain that an iced caramel macchiato is literally mostly milk and is already sweetened.
[deleted] [OP]7 points1y ago
and it’s like, cool baristas are usually fine to explain what a macchiato is and options for making it sweeter (more v, classic, LC) but people really be ready to duke it out … like they know what they want 😂 you don’t boo I promiseeee
defendpoppunk776 points1y ago
Every time a piece of my soul dies but I do it gladly because it saves me having to remake the drink lmao
canithoe9 points1y ago
A guy came in the other day asking for a caramel macchiato w room for cream
ALSX38 points1y ago
I had somebody come in and ask for “A grande latte, sugar, no milk”
canithoe7 points1y ago
How do people not know what a latte is omg
[deleted] [OP]5 points1y ago
every. day.
Wide_Inspection67746 points1y ago
See… I woulda just said ok and typed 2% on top
[deleted] [OP]5 points1y ago
I’m so new, I catch myself trying to help people out too much 😅 You right asf 😂
miniinovaa6 points1y ago
What did she end up getting? Lol
[deleted] [OP]22 points1y ago
AN ICED VANILLA LATTE 💀
Jew_33 points1y ago
But did she complain that it wasn’t the right drink?
[deleted] [OP]3 points1y ago
of course not! cause that’s what she ordered 😂
philosopher_cat_lady5 points1y ago
STOP MAKING ME FEEL STUPID EVEN THOUGH I'M STUPID
FfierceLaw-8 points1y ago
The splash of 2% may be to cool it down. You could say, “A latte is made with steamed 2%, would you like some additional cold 2% added at the end?”
[deleted] [OP]9 points1y ago
Didn’t really want to script the whole conversation for y’all, but I asked all the things promise 😂 Twas a confusion all around
FfierceLaw2 points1y ago
Sounds like a less ice/more milk situation
heartashley8 points1y ago
They asked for it iced..
trmbnplyr19938 points1y ago
Exactly, they want their iced drink cool down. Can't have a piping hot iced latte. /s
FfierceLaw0 points1y ago
Ok then that’s just weird
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
Weird asf 😂 I honestly think she wanted iced coffee but she got mad at me for asking about that too!
