How do you make your coffee at home? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by narviat
I use a french press since I'm the only one in my house who drinks coffee, much less waste that way

Also I like coffee with my creamer

I use a small cone made by Melitta and a goose neck kettle to make cups of pour over coffee one at a time for myself. Before that I always used a Zogirushi electric drip brewer that uses a cone filter. I'm a stickler about the cone shaped filters, whether I'm using my electric drip or making a pour over. It is not easy to find an electric drip with a cone shaped filter, they tend not to prominently disclose what they use

why the cone filter? does it make the coffee taste a particular way?

Your question made me examine this particular prejudice I have. Goes back to the 80s when my sophisticated, foodie boyfriend got me my first Melitta and it was different than my parent's Mr. Coffee. So I have stuck with it. Cones are not new, I recently saw a scene from the old Mary Tyler Moore show and she was carrying a tray with a Chemex on it - a method that seems to be enjoying a comeback, if Amazon reviews mean anything. I enjoy my coffee black with a lighter roast, I want to it to have a sour, citrus taste or I feel cheated. If it does not have this it tastes flat and boring to me. I am definitely not a "super taster," in that I prefer black coffee, dark chocolate and any kind of intense flavors. This profile seems to go with the greater extraction that occurs in a cone. $1 is a 2019 article that references a study conducted on the cone/basket question. After you read it, you may conclude that a basket gives you the flavor that you want. That has an advantage because basket filters are cheaper and machines that use them are more readily available. Edit: I just saw that you use a French Press. I would never turn down a cup from one, they are fun to use camping too.

thanks for the answer! it was an interesting read for sure.

i had a coworker who probably knew the most about coffee in our store at the time and he told me the french press was the best way to get the most out of the coffee because it wont filter out the oils that bring flavor. which i myself find to be true (tho im not a coffee genius). my gf bought the french press before i even started at sbux and upon finding out she shouldnt have coffee (often anyway) the press kinda became mine. i get such satisfaction pressing down the top, and it makes the perfect amount every time

We have a drip brewer for big pots of coffee, I've been really liking the cold brew in a french press method these days. If have extra time in the morning, I'll do a pour over but I'm usually rushing out the door so drip coffee it is.

Usually i take 2% milk with my coffee and nothing else, but there are a few roasts i can drink black!

My burr grinder has settings. Medium grind for 5 cups, water level for six cups in the brewer, power ON!
