Customer connection (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ashley0927
Hello! I’m a new green bean. Shift leads put me on window a lot! I understand having customer connection and there are some people that absolutely LOVE TO TALK which is great. But there are others that you could tell don’t want to be bothered at all. I feel bad because I have a few customers come through that I could tell want nothing to do with having a small conversation. My manager is watching over my shoulder making sure I’m talking to EVERYONE and I always try to explain some people aren’t in the mood. What do you do? It’s hard to talk to people when your managers force you and the customer is on their phone or practically rolling there eyes.

You nod agreeably to your SM and then do whatever at the window bc it doesn’t fucking matter. Customer connex is a bullshit metric andlots of people hate being taped to at the window

I always come up with a question of the day that I’m going to ask every customer. “Do you have any weekend plans” “are you dressing up for halloween” “omg your dog is so cute what’s his name”
or think of something you can compliment “i love your nails” “you have a really cool car” that could spark conversation. If they don’t really give much response, that’s when I just tell them their items will be right out and move on. The question we’re scored on is “did the barista make an effort to get to know me,” so as long as you’re making an effort with every customer your manager should be satisfied. if your manager is still on your back about it, just turn it into asking for coaching: “I’m having trouble connecting with customers who are on their phones, do you have any advice for that or is there someone else on the team that does a good job that I can observe?”
