Looking for perspectives on whether or not being a barista is worth it(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by backup988
For reference, I just quit chick fil a, where I was basically underpaid, overworked in BOH, and excluded from the horrible gossip clique that was management/team
Anyways, I gave my local starbucks a call and they told me they had openings for a Barista, in the Texas area, pay is currently $12/hr and they're upping it to $15/hr apparently in January or next summer
Honestly, I was sold, they've got AC too.. the interview is this Tuesday, but I'm thinking about it now, is that base pay fair for the amount of work they're going to have me doing, I've never worked for this company before so I have no idea. I've heard being a barista is seriously intense, and apparently they might want me to do openings even at 5 AM
Anyone would advise me to rethink here or am I making the right decision? Any positive/negative experiences are welcome
Thanks

I quit for many reasons. I felt like we were constantly doing the work of 2-4 people and it was heartbreaking watching girls give their all just to be yelled at by customers or to have panic attacks and cries in the back. Mentally exhausting. Had no pay for two months with no explanation, almost didn't get my money back until threatening legal action. Finally quit when they took covid hazard pay away AS they started opening up the cafes again, also the temporary manager kept scheduling me during school.

I'm really sorry you had to witness any of that let alone deal with all the stress, at my previous job too they'd have me in back of house in heat and sweat boxing nuggets for $8.75 an hour, it felt like I was practically working in a sweatshop. barely was making $200 every other week. Management admitted I was being underpayed but denied they could do anything for me
Anyways, I hope you found a better job, if you don't mind me asking what company do you work for now? thinking it's probably best for me to stay away from restaurant/food catering for now

As someone who left chickfila after working there for three years and now works at Starbucks as of June, Starbucks is much better than Chick-fil-A but it’s still a shit show (in terms of what the companies turning into and the very frequent overly entitled customers) and somedays I wish I still worked at that forsaken chicken place

My chick fil a management underpayed me but denied it was their fault, read my comment above, it was awful! I would never want to work there again, but sbux does seem intense too, I've been to the location I applied too and it seemed hectic
How long did it take you to get used to the job? Honestly being a barista had always sounded complicated but nothing I couldn't handle, I might also just stay away from food handling and anything related to food and beverage work for now, im not sure, it seems like there are a lot of valid complaints

I unfortunately don’t know of many restaurant jobs where the pay is worth the work you’re doing. They all love exploiting people. And, yes, we open obscenely early. We get there at 4am in my area.

Did you tell the manager at your interview you weren't willing to work openings, I'm hoping mine is going to be flexible, but seriously, homie that shits crazy, for real though,, there's no fuckin way I'm waking up at 3 or 4 am for that

i just started last month and i’ve liked it so far, hopefully you find yourself at a good store with friendly partners and a kind manager because that’s honestly what one of the biggest factors in giving you a good experience at starbucks

I worked for Starbucks for about a year and a half and left because I was moving states and wanted to try something new as Starbucks was sort of my first “real” job. Four years later, i’m back at the bux! I joke that starbucks is the only company that i’ve left that i’ve ever considered working at again. i’ve been fortunate to work at two really great stores with good managers, but I know there are some stores and managers out there that are not great.
I honestly like the hype, I enjoy the fast paced, sometimes chaotic, environment, and the work itself can be fun depending on what position you’re in. I’m also naturally a morning person so the early wake ups don’t bother me (i’m not a primary opener though so my shifts typically start at more like 6/7 and you can absolutely not make yourself available to open if you don’t want to).
starting out was definitely hard, I feel like the first three months were really overwhelming and challenging, but I can honestly say I really like the job. work is work no matter where you go and there will always be disadvantages to any job. plus, the benefits starbucks offers are really, really great.
hope this helps!
