Someone came in for the apple caramel spice… (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by poisonousbutterflies
I had a male customer come in the other day 10/29/21 round 7pm and he ordered two drinks. The first one was a venti caramel macchiato IIRC and the other one I had thought he ordered the apple crisp macchiato. Nope, turns out to be the apple caramel spice drink (usually called apple cider by our customers) and I had to tell him we didn’t have the cinnamon dolce to make it. I wasn’t really annoyed, just a bit peeved… well folks the whole story takes a turn into the most positive direction and becomes one of my favorite interactions ever, when he nicely asks me if I could whip up anything similar to it for his wife, who had been 30 hours into labor. I don’t know why but it just clicks in me and now suddenly I’m like hell yeah I can do that for you! So here’s my little dupe for it :)! For a venti sized one, I grabbed the steaming pitcher and put two pumps of caramel and brown sugar into it, then of course poured apple juice to the venti line. After that I grabbed the cinnamon dolce topping and put I’d say two table spoons into the pitcher, then I steamed the sweet concoction. I poured this into two little cups, had him taste one and I taste the other before we both agreed it was pretty correct to the original taste! So I decidedly make two ventis of these for his wife, put the whip, caramel drizzle and dolce topping on each ofc… and gave them to him for free. He was so kind and looked so relived, I hope the two drinks he originally ordered got him through the rest of her labor and that his wife enjoyed her sweet treat after. Kindness from both ends go a long way (he was extremely polite when he came in to order btw, thanking me and everything!) and I would feel so special if a barista took the extra care and time to make my labor just a touch easier. I also like to think that if my boyfriend came into a starbucks for a similar situation like this man that he’d hopefully be given the same kindness as well. Just a little story that I thought to share about this special interaction that has become my favorite ♡

(Edited to stick to the story, lol)

I hope they come back with their baby and remember you!

I hope so too, but I most likely won’t see them because I put my two weeks in :(

Wish I had baristas like you at the one I go to cos they don’t seem to care at all. It’s rare I find old school baristas that give you the “third place” feeling.

In our defense, corporate is always down our throats about getting our drive times down and just pumping out these sugary coffee milkshakes so even those of us who WANT to go this extra mile are dissuaded from doing it. Especially in the drive thru. If we get over 50 seconds per car in the drive thru you would think the sky is falling.

yesterday i had the best saturday i've had in. literally years. our card readers and mobiles were down, naturally weren't as busy. i was able to have great conversations with almost every customer i made a drink for while on cafe bar during peak.

even helping those that didn't realize their mobiles went to a different store, we had great interactions!

having a more manageable amount of orders really goes a long way to being able to create that third place and make those connections that we really do want to make

Yeah last week one of our espresso machines were down so we had to do all orders from one espresso machine so originally we were all like "oh fuck this is going to suck". But eventually our manger turned off all deliveries and all mobile orders and we only had cafe and drive and it was super chill and everyone in the cafe seemed to have a great time! A bit weird when you're actually rooting for your shit to break down so you can actually have good interactions lol!

I feel like most customers that come through drive through aren’t looking for that, even though our company pushes for customer connections. Some people that come into the store are also not looking for connections, it depends really :) I guess some may get intimidated… most people don’t really reach out for that socialization but we are open for it!

You steamed ***the syrup***??
poisonousbutterflies [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Haha yes I did, I just wanted the flavor all even
StormTheParade 3 points 1y ago
Definitely not a good idea! Syrup is bad for the wands and is against policy. I would have steamed cinnamon powder or cinnamon dolce powder in (if y'all have any lmao) and just swirled the syrups as I poured the apple juice. It just needs to be spiced apple juice, really!

idc bout policy, i’m quitting
StormTheParade 13 points 1y ago
ok but that can fuck up the machine that other people still have to use, and effect other customers' drinks. Just not a good thing to tout as "okay to do."

I just use caramel or vanilla instead of CD and put the standard cr driz on top. It's still delicious
poisonousbutterflies [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Pretty much yeah! Put some cinnamon dolce in the pitcher too and it’s almost identical

We don't carry the CD topping either, I wish we did it sounds so yummy (I always steam plain cinnamon in my latte though so I'm sure that could work too!)
