Keep working or take a LOA? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by madamemonday
So somehow I strained my Achilles and I'm in a walking boot. Doctor signed off on me to continue working, I would just need to wear the boot while working. My SM called PRC and they told her I would need an accommodation for the boot, so I went ahead and submitted that. I've worked two shifts in the boot and I was nearly in tears by the end of each shift. Even though my SM is willing to bend over backwards for me (she said she would accommodate me for the physical therapy sessions required) I'm considering a LOA because it just hurts too much to be on my feet that long. I really do need the money to be able to afford physical therapy though. Should I tough it out and keep working or go ahead and take two weeks or so?

Take the leave. If you keep straining it, youre gonna mess up how it heals and risk it never being the same. I know the store needs you, but your longterm health is at stake. Forget 'we dont get payed enough' for this because the way a permanent leg injury can affect your life is far beyond what can be measured in money. I dont know anything about the cup fund, but maybe its worth looking into to pay for your physical therapy while you cant work.

I've just gone back after breaking my arm, I know it's not the same thing but taking the time off when I had the cast was genuinely the best thing I did for my mental health at the time.

take the leave

As someone who didn’t take time off for an ankle injury…..it’s years later and I’m still in serious pain all the time. STAY OFF OF IT. let it rest

UPDATE:

Talked to my SM, she understands that I need to put myself first. I decided to take a month's leave just to be on the safe side since I could be in the boot longer than the 2-3 weeks they're shooting for. I found out short term disability will also be an option, and that should cover what I need for physical therapy. Thanks for all the advice everyone. ❤️

Don’t break your body for work. If you can take an LOA to heal you should.
