around when did you start being able to make drinks semi-decently?(self.starbucksbaristas)

i’ve been at starbucks almost a month and have only been on bar 3-4 times. i am taken off each time because i don’t have a very good grasp on recipes.
when did you start getting a good grasp on it? how long until you were trusted to be on bar? partners who started last week are already doing way better than i am 😣 i wish i could learn faster.
additionally : around what point does it become an issue if a green bean isn’t catching up fast enough? how long until partners start to wonder if they aren’t a good fit for the company?

Probably making decent drinks 4-6 weeks in but not making them fast enough until around 3 months in. Count your blessings; once you get fast you'll never be taken off bar again 🤡

It took me six months. Longer than most bc our turnover rate was low when I started and I was always just put on window bc I was the least experienced for a long time. I have been seeing green beans catch on a lot quicker though recently, as soon as just a couple months. Mainly bc they have to learn quickly rn since all our experienced partners keep leaving. I’d say three months is the sweet spot to where the average barista can bar decently. You haven’t been with Starbucks very long and half that time was in training. You’ll get bar time, trust me. “Training” for this job just takes a lot longer than official training and there’s a lot more to learn than what meets the eye.

i was never trained on bar but since we are understaffed i would kinda force myself on bar by offering to help and i would ask a lot of questions so now i can solo bar and i’ve been here a little less than 3 months :)

I started 2 months ago and now I’m almost completely comfortable with being on bar. I think it really helped that my ssvs would put me on bar whenever there’s no rush, so i was able to get used to sequencing, making drinks, etc. Everything is just muscle memory at this point.

Hmm for me I would say about a month and a half into the job. I, of course, still mess up on certain things (like I just recently realized the mocha cookie crumble gets frap chips lmaoo) but it really is all muscle memory. Most drinks basically are made the same way just with different syrups/pumps. I’ve been getting put on bar a LOT the past couple of weeks and it just became my 3 month anniversary since I got hired, which is usually the average amount of time before a partner is considered to be super comfortable with their job.

i’ve been at starbucks for 5 years and HONESTLY i didn’t get really good at making quality drinks until i was a year in

really depends on ur external environment: who you’re working with, location, type of store, workspace design, how easy you can trigger flow state, how often you work, how your brain optimizes tasks, you get the idea. when i started my coworkers let me write the shot and syrup numbers on the mastrenas and from there i picked up little tips and tricks others might have had for me every time i barred. after about 3 months working 30 hour weeks in a DT i dont think anyone had major complaints but everyone’s different. definitely ask partners if you dont know what goes in a drink, and try to guess the ingredients /process in ur head before they answer

Hi I’ve also been at Starbucks about a month! I’m not super fast yet but I feel like I have a good enough grasp on all the drinks. Usually the ones I have trouble with are shaken espressos. My best piece of advice that helped me out at least was just going through the different drinks on the register because it shows pumps, shots, etc. I had a partner whose been with the company 5 years (and has a black apron) that this is a hard job and it’s okay to ask questions if you don’t know

For me to be confident on bar during peak 4-5 months.

But to be fair I was working another job and it was graveyard so I was exhausted

It definitely depends on the person and how fast they’re able to grasp everything, for me it took maybe 1-2 months? At the store I started at it was pretty staffed so it was easy for me to get lots of bar time because we always had at least 1-2 other people to help me out. On the other hand at the store I’m at currently ive noticed a few green beans struggling, one didn’t feel super comfortable until close to a year, I wouldn’t say it was a huge issue as the partners who have taken more time just weren’t put on bar that often so it took them a much longer time to feel more comfortable
