Hate when people insist on a “regular coffee” and get mad when I ask specifics(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Comprehensive-Gate94
So many people ask for a “regular coffee “ at my store. I offer them the Pike Place drip coffee and they continue to repeat just a “regular coffee”. When I just go ahead with Pike since clearly they don’t get it and then ask if they want milk or sugar they kept saying “you know a regular coffee? A regular size coffee. Don’t you know what that is?” Like yes I know what one is, thank you. We just don’t do anything like that here. Read the sign and sizes then tell me. It bothers me so much especially since these people spend 5-10 minutes reading the sign then they still ask???
Go to McDonald’s or Tim’s or DuKin or whatever, man. We don’t have “regular coffees” at Starbucks we have millions of customizations with several sizes but nothing named “just a regular size regular coffee.” 🙄
Hot-Froyo183 points1y ago
A rude customer tells me "1 regular coffee". I say, "Ok, any cream or sugar?". Then he replies progressively louder, "a regular coffee..a regular coffee...A REGULAR COFFEE, I GET IT ALL THE TIME HERE". So I politely ask, what's in a regular coffee, like how many sugars and cream? He says, rolling his eyes, it's a medium coffee with 4 sugars and 4 creams. I give up.
imeanitpeanut67 points1y ago
Literally every single customer has a different idea about what “regular” means.
KJ2998SJ49 points1y ago
😂 Sheesh if they're gonna be rude, then they should at least get their lingo right. If anything, regular means one cream one sugar. Like black, regular, double double, triple triple. But also, note to all customers, don't be rude about it at all, we just wanna make sure we're putting the right stuff in your coffee.

"I'm glad you get it all the time here. Please tell me what it is."
muhkiim6 points1y ago
Damn I would've assumed he meant a black coffee. Been like. "Sorry sir, a regular coffee is plain coffee :P"
Supadupastein6 points1y ago
Lol when I worked at Starbucks if anybody yelled at me I would have literally accidentally spilled coffee on them and be willing to quit or get fired. You don’t abuse people who are just trying to help you, do their job, and are working their ass off. Thankfully nobody yelled at me but I still hated working there.
Glizzysforrizzy70 points1y ago
I always ask what’s regular to you ? Usually they respond ok to it, but I agree 100% so annoying we aren’t mind readers
haydensidun56 points1y ago
I feel like the word “regular” is different for everyone. For one person a “regular coffee” might just be a tall black pike. For another person a “regular coffee” might be a venti pike with extra oatmilk and 4 raw sugars. You never know.
Malevolent_barnacle36 points1y ago
Nope, if they don't want to play, dealer's choice. I used to ask 'you like small, medium, or large regular' you take cream/sugar? Etc but now, no. Venti, with classic add dairy - pay up old man.
eyelinertothestars35 points1y ago
I ran out of pike half way through the other day and asked the customer if I could top it off with dark. He proceeded to yell “regular coffee!” At me
narviat27 points1y ago
hot water it is!
hollowsockets33 points1y ago
This guy came in today and ordered "one chocolate" and I asked if he wanted a hot chocolate or a mocha and he was so condescending he just said the word chocolate really slowly to me like I was an idiot so I just rang him up for a mocha because I wasn't gonna deal with that bs. He took it and didn't complain but I don't understand why people choose to be like this.
ProletarianProblems20 points1y ago
Please tell me you gave him decaf espresso.
hollowsockets21 points1y ago
I used regular espresso, but I left out the whip because he clearly had no idea what he was ordering and would probably flip out if he saw me putting whipped cream on his drink. Because of course he stared at me the whole time I made it 😒
ProletarianProblems14 points1y ago
Ugh, I’m sorry you had to deal with that. I’ve gotten to a point where I just want to give rude customers what they ask for without asking questions. A breve? Not a breve latte? Well okay, here’s a cup of steamed half-and-half. lol
hollowsockets6 points1y ago
Honestly, at some point I just have to roll my eyes at these people. Then make fun of them with my coworkers once they leave.
lea-oppalove31 points1y ago
I've always hated that but I got so used to it meaning "no fuss, just pick for me". So they automatically get pike. If yes to milk and sugar, they get whole milk and I pass them a few domino and a stirrer to take their non-particular asses to the condiment bar and I can move the line along.
Hench_LV_15D6 points1y ago
**like this**
lemonuponlemon2 points1y ago
What’s pike? Sorry, I’m dumb.
lea-oppalove3 points1y ago
You're not dumb! If I thought you were dumb, I'd tell you that Pike is a type of fish. Or that Pike Place Roast is the only place you can find the fish for sale, bc I'd expect someone dumb to take my word for it.
I have to admit though... the word 'roast'? I'm convinced that actually has nothing to do with anything, so I'm still not sure why thats part of the name... I just never asked for clarification. But I wouldn't say it's dumb to not know these things, if I were speaking as one partner to another (...you Are a partner, right?)
lemonuponlemon2 points1y ago
Partner to be! Thank you so much for the explanation. Never worked for Starbucks before, just competitors!
lea-oppalove1 points1y ago
Oh shoot, I'm sorry... some of my reply might have been my tongue in cheek humor that could be mistaken for sarcasm bc I thought it was a partner being funny by 'not knowing' pike... my brain unnecessarily manages to turn legit questions into a joke when it was not intended to be one 😔
I apologize, and offer an actual answer to a soon to be fellow partner!
Pike Place is the name of the famous marketplace in Seattle, it's where the first Starbucks store opened and has remained open to this day. And it has remained an unchanged option on the menu for almost as many years as Starbucks has existed. I just kinda find it funny(but with a twinge of sadness) that it's not really relevant in Starbucks culture anymore despite it's history in the company. It's just a 'regular coffee'— at least to anybody who doesn't work there.
veggieshreds2 points1y ago
it's just medium roast drip coffee lol
lemonuponlemon1 points1y ago
Thanks
LocalSpaceCadet26 points1y ago
Oh my personal favorites are the people who come up and just "Decaf." I look at them with wide eyes and blink a few times "Decaf what?" Like I know they're probably meaning decaf pike but I AIN'T GOT TIME TO PLAY 20 QUESTIONS WITH YOU?? USE YOUR BIG KID WORDS??
anitasdoodles13 points1y ago
Reminds me of the asshats that ask for an extra wet cappuccino.
rat-god-13 points1y ago
the best is when you ask if it’s a black coffee and they scoff at you in disgust 👌🏻
Mysterious-Dig-341413 points1y ago
I hate it so much. Much easier for them to learn med Pike black. Like okay no prob and they can move on
Sparklesmewmew6 points1y ago
If a customer keeps insisting on a "regular coffee" without giving me any more information they're getting a tall black pikes 🤷
eagle67056 points1y ago
Lol if I didnt know the guy venti drip and that's it...I had a few why so big I said well you said regular and to me that's large lmao
Calm_Preference62095 points1y ago
“Can I have the fresh daily drip of the day”
coldcatsoup4 points1y ago
I literally deal with this quite often in my part of the country. I just stop them and say, “so saying “regular coffee” is going to get you our medium size, a grande Medium Roast, Pike’s Place hot and black. Is that what you want a hot BLACK coffee?”
“Ohh you want cream…. and sugar?” “Ok so next time order yourself a Pike with cream and five sugar packets”
GTFO now.
Or they actually want a Latte… that’s happened plenty of times. :(
RottenFries4 points1y ago
i don’t really have that problem? every time they ask for regular coffee i get them pike which quite literally is our regular coffee…
sofso19 points1y ago
yeah but what size? did they want cream or sugar? these are questions you 100% have to ask, even if it's just a "regular" coffee
Magnhild9412 points1y ago
Not really - if they say regular coffee and sound like specific is will stress them out I don’t bother and I give them a grande black pike
sofso17 points1y ago
and you don't get customers bothering you for cream or sugar after they get their coffee and realize there's no cream or sugar put out for them? dang. I still get that, even when I ask and they insist they want it black.
Brgnbo16 points1y ago
I hate when they order a black coffee and then go pester cafe bar for cream and sugars.. like dude. I asked you if you wanted some and you said no ugh we could’ve been done ten minutes ago
IfuDidntCome2Party6 points1y ago
Exactly what I would do with the testy irate customers. They learn real quick that they need to be specific with everything they want to order. ESP is not part of the equation. Let them come back if they don't like it.
RottenFries2 points1y ago
or you can ask “plain black” and if they say yes (which they likely will) then you know it’s plain pike…
sofso7 points1y ago
You're still asking them another follow up question in that case lol you're one of us!
Hench_LV_15D-3 points1y ago
No, that is a normal and appropriate and expected question.
Itsmyhumbleopinion2 points1y ago
One time i said: if you want a regular coffee go make it your self! We have big class coffee… just to make the customer mad lol! I’m tired of the Entitle people!
Jew_32 points1y ago
“Okay here is your Venti Verona, have a great day and thanks for stopping by!”
buzzy90002 points1y ago
I get so many and turns out they mean a latte 😑
Pylon-Cam2 points1y ago
When a customer asks for a regular coffee, I always give them black pike. It’s not worth my time or energy to have those interactions.
chuckywucky2 points1y ago
I just say our regular coffee is a black medium roast.
Necessary_Low9391 points1y ago
When they say that I just give them a grande pike
Tiffi20111 points1y ago
All my regular coffees are From men over 70.
Either_Reply_1331 points1y ago
had someone ask for a regular coffee once, what they actually wanted was a dark roast 2 milk 2 sugar
Peebles461 points1y ago
I’m so sick of the Tim’s people asking for a regular. I know what a regular is, and what a double double is, but I’ll always ask what’s in a regular if they order it that way.
inoskankles1 points1y ago
yea no, if that happened to me that’s a grande pike. pull to the window please.
Sunnysunflowers11121 points1y ago
In NY deli / bodega / street cart speak regular coffee means milk & sugar, thats likely where they got that from.
FfierceLaw1 points1y ago
I haven't had anyone say that but I would have to tell them that to me a "regular coffee" would be black and unsweetened. To my partner it would have three syrups, milk and foam. To my other partner it would be blended with whole milk and ice. It means different things to different people
Greennooblet1 points1y ago
Even at Tim Hortants or Mcdonals a regular coffee won't get you far, I mean you need to know the size, I mean the only advantage that those stores have is they can throw cream and sugar in a bag and let the customer deal with that.
philosopher_cat_lady1 points1y ago
"I don't mean to hurt your fragile ego by questioning you, but you aren't telling me what you want to order and it's my job to take your order."
chrichri333331 points1y ago
We had a guy who used to order "just a cup of coffee", and when we'd ask him "what size?" "Which roast?" "Cream?" "Sugar?" He would always answer with "just a cup of coffee!". I would always give him whichever was the least popular brew of the day. One time, he complained that his coffee was never the same price. 😑
adorkablysporktastic1 points1y ago
I asked "A DD regular or a coffee shop regular?" when i was a barista many years ago a regular was a grande coffee with room for cream. A Dunken regular is 4 cream 4 sugar iirc.

But what is “black coffee”? Is it a blonde roast with no milk or sugar, a dark roast with no milk or sugar or a pike place roast with no milk or sugar? These are all categorized as black coffee but asking for a “hot black coffee” doesn’t specify the type of bean you would like used in your drip coffee. This is why it is annoying and stressful for baristas who take orders.

I can honestly tell you that "black coffee" means no cream but lots of sweetener to some people. That's gross to me because I like it with no cream or sweetener but just wanted you to know that NOT EVERYONE THINKS LIKE YOU. We're not HOUNDING you, we just want to serve you once and not twice. Yes I'm yelling because I'm pissed at you for having that attitude toward a barista who JUST WANTS TO GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME WITH YOU, DUMMY!
Hench_LV_15D-20 points1y ago
You do know that Starbucks is a coffee shop? If hundreds of people say “regular coffee”, maybe you want to add that to your sign. There are a Lot of people who just want coffee without a million questions.
It goes like this:
“medium coffee, please”.
“Cream and sugar?”
“Just regular milk, thank you”.
Everywhere I go, anywhere in the US, or even elsewhere, this is the conversation. This is why the customer gets salty.
Comprehensive-Gate94 [OP]9 points1y ago
We got one of those customers bois 😂
Hench_LV_15D-8 points1y ago
So, would you be one of the eye-rolling smirkers?
StormTheParade6 points1y ago
The problem is, there is no "regular" coffee. Whether you're using "regular" to describe the size, the blend, the roast, or if "regular" refers to whatever you habitually order (with milk, with cream, with certain sugars, etc), there's no way for them to know. Same with "regular" milk, for you that might be whole, but for others it might be skim.
Even in your example where you specify the size right away, employees still have to ask. Especially now, as condiment bars have not been used in almost 2 years. If you ask for a "regular" coffee, and the barista doesn't question it, you are getting whatever blend and roast the barista is closest to, and without cream or sugar. You would then have to come back through the line or interrupt someone else in order to request whatever you want added.
If this makes you salty, you need to start making your coffee at home before you leave for the day.
Oathkeeper266 points1y ago
Is a regular coffee listed on the Starbucks menu? No.
So, read the menu, and order off of it like everyone else.
And besides, the point isn’t relating to Starbucks not having “regular coffee,” it’s the condescension that comes with customers asking for a regular coffee and not even specifying a size. And then when asked if they want cream/sugar, keep on repeating the phrase “regular coffee.”
Those customers know what they are doing, they are intentionally being a pain. If they truly wanted a “regular coffee,” they would ask for a Pike or go somewhere else. My dad is as boomer as it gets, and he still learned how to order what he wanted properly at Starbucks without being rude or condescending to the baristas.
Hench_LV_15D-5 points1y ago
Do you not see it as weird that you require people to learn how to speak to you, using terminology that few other places use? and that you get mad when they use normal English?
All of this when *you* are trying to improve customer service, wait times, and relationships?
And when getting them a coffee is the easiest thing you can do? unlike the silly 18-step concoctions that you remake and remake until the customer is “happy”?
You are rewarding the behavior of the worst customer. The “regular” coffee drinkers are low maintenance. You *know* what they mean by regular, it means Pike. Get cup, put in coffee, maybe a cream or sugar, they’re out.
C0ffeeCoffeeC0ffee5 points1y ago
I don't know what anyone means by "regular coffee" because depending on who is saying it they may mean cream and sugar, or they may mean black, they may mean small or medium or large. "A medium coffee with cream and sugar" is perfectly normal English used in any establishment serving coffee 🤷♀️
Also reading through this thread it doesn't seem as if people are complaining about customers who are willing to answer how they want their "regular coffee", they're talking about people who get angry when asked what they mean by regular.
animeilove12194 points1y ago
What is regular milk? There is 2%,1%,nonfat,coconut,almond,nonfat,soy,oat,hemp,goat,heavy cream,Half and half And probably a ton more lol
Hench_LV_15D-7 points1y ago
Regular milk is whole milk. If you want 2%, you say “2%, please”
OneRoseDark5 points1y ago
I agree with this now, but until I moved to college I always drank 2% so I think of that as "regular milk" even 6 years later when I drink and buy exclusively whole milk. If you want regular milk, you'll get 2% from me.
Hench_LV_15D1 points1y ago
Regular milk is whole milk. That’s what you get when you get milk from a cow. That’s why it’s called regular.
Struggling054 points1y ago
Sorry, regular is subjective since it’s not a set menu item. Also, if you choose the Bux, you choose it’s “lingo.”
kqs133 points1y ago
There is no actual standard on what regular milk is. For some people, regular might actually mean 2%. Regular to you might mean something completely different to someone else. That's why it's nice to have specifics, so that we can can make your drink how you like it. When I ask for specifics, I'm not trying to be annoying, I'm trying to make your drink the way you like it so that you'll be happy and satisfied.
