So I broke my arm last week and I had been on DT for the most part. But today I was allowed to solo bar for my entire shift…with a broken arm. My manager told me I was her hero and that she was very impressed and I was doing an awesome job. Today I felt back in groove. I’ve only worked here a little over a month now! I’m so proud of me!

i’m sorry but is this actually true? your manager threw you solo on bar for an entire shift with a broken arm? i’m glad you’re happy with how you did but holy cow your manager is a pos

For real there is no excuse as to why another fully abled person couldn’t bar. My coworker twisted her ankle and my SM stuck her on window for 3 days until our DM visited our store and she was LIVID, she made him send my coworker home with pay. It’s a hazard to have someone who is already injured risk further injury at work.

See that is what I had been saying too. But i was just fine doing bar or anything besides drive.

I’m not criticizing you for doing it, I think you’re strong as hell for being solo bar your whole shift AND you’re only a month into it. Kudos for that bc if your store is anything like mine, most people aren’t aces on bar til their 2nd or 3rd month. I’m more pissed at your SM for doing it and your SSV’s for not stepping in and being like “uhm fuck no have someone else do it”. Idk how strict your district is but I would 100% call the ethics and compliance line and let them know that your arm is broken and they’re still making you do high intensity work.

Thank you for the input!! Well my trainer was the one who asked me if I wanted to do bar because I checked the schedule and all my shift said was bar that was it, I asked them if I was reading it right 😅 they said “if you feel comfortable and want to do it, you can” and I had my supervisors asking me throughout the day if I was okay and if I was able to bar. I said yes and I asked for help if i needed it, my supervisors and trainer helped me throughout the day especially with mobiles when were backed up or busier. I could of done drive or CS but that’s all I’ve been doing, I’ve only done hot bar here and there and cold bar twice. For me, it was more of a “I want to see if I can do it” rather than an ethical issue, which I totally understand it was an ethical issue… But for me to be able to do it just proved to myself that when I’m all recovered I’ll be able to do it with two arms 😅 I really appreciate everyone’s input about this because for the future I will look at situations like this differently. Again thank you!

Yes it’s true 😂 and actually, alot of my partners think the same thing of her not just about this situation but alot of other things, but I have been eager on bar since I started. Because me and another new hire were never fully bar trained yet 6 other new hires immediately started on bar, so we felt a little bad about that. But she and I have been speaking up asking for bar time, so I guess I got my wish granted today 😂 it wasn’t too difficult honestly because I’ve done bar a few times for a couple hours so I know how to make the drinks without asking too often, because my trainer was amazing and is still amazing!! So I am not upset at all because as a barista I want to make drinks and learn my craft, as this is something I really love and enjoy 😁

I am SO proud of you. as a partner for a little over a year I would not have been able to do that, i’m way too clumsy and would make a mess. with that being said make sure not to strain yourself here and i wish you the best
sero5074 [OP]4 points1y ago
Thank you so much! And I will take your advice to heart, I would like to keep my arm healthy so when it’s all healed I get to do bar more often!!
vroommmmmmm3 points1y ago
Good, you’re health will always be more important than pleasing a manager in any job or position. there’s a lot of shitty managers out there but always remember, you can get another job but not another you.

partner here with almost four years experience. if i was asked to solo bar with a broken arm i would have quit on the spot
sero5074 [OP]3 points1y ago
I wasnt asked to solo, i just ended up doing it. I had help of course. But ill keep this in mind.

i know how good it feels to finally stretch your wings on bar when you start, especially when you find your groove and absolutely kill it. but your manager even considering letting you on bar with a broken bone… that is not a good sign at all about the condition of your store. keep having fun, and keep taking pride in doing a good job. but remember to always put yourself and your health first.
