I think the cup tickets can be improved... (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by be_wilder_everyday
Hey, fairly green bean (less than 6months) here and I have been doing some thinking.

As I understand it, customers can order and customize drinks in any sequence they like (ie...triple iced espresso, 2 pump white choc, add carmel crunch topping, salted foam, venti cup, extra ice, splash of half and half, blonde espresso)

These all print on the tickets in the order that they are input by the DTO person and I understand keeping that order at that point so the customer can confirm their drink is accurate. (Especially if you have a fancy order confirmation screen in your drive through area)

This is ok, but makes it unnecessarily hard on those making the drinks because they have to read very carefully to not miss an out of sequence detail. I cant tell you how often I grab the wrong cup size because that note is at the bottom of the ticket.

I think Starbucks should invest in creating a back end software program that would automatically reshuffle the drink ticket after the order is saved to match the drink making process at the bar stations.
So the above ticket would be automatically reshuffled and print out and this way at the bar...

ICED TRIPL ESSP
Venti cup
2 white choc
Blonde
Extra ice
Splash half and half
Salted foam
Add carmel crunch

(Did I put the splash in at the right spot? I am not sure...lol!)

Is this idea dumb? Has it already been tried/is something jn the works @ HQ? What do you all think about this?

If you like this idea please feel free tosubmit it on the weekly survey and lets see if we can cause a change.

this is… a really great idea. idk exactly how the tickets work (i think they are grouped by the they are on screen) but having some code to figure out the sequence would be smart

issue is though humans all work differently so it might honestly lead to more issues but idk. i do agree though the “in a x cup” should be higher than it typically is lol. its hella annoying already but having it often near the bottom makes it worse imo

Yeah everyone works differently despite the standard drink making order protocol. But still I think organizing the cup so people know where to look for the info they need will go a long way towards making bariata life easier.

I've never had problems with DTO but mobiles were a nightmare. I've never used the app but when reading tickets I assume it's just chaos on their end. You'd figure SB would have planned it out better.

I also wish they would list out all the ingredients in a drink, I know baristas are supposed to know what goes into a drink.. but it'd be helpful for green beans, and the order that they go in depending on the drink. I also get that they have the "cheat sheet" taped somewhere behind the bar but.. having it on the sticker would make it so much faster instead of having to squint to look at the sheet!! But then again.. maybe all the info wouldn't even fit on the ticket lol

I’ve been taught to look for the cup size first since it’s usually at the bottom and work my way up. But this idea sounds great! Would definitely help make the drink making process faster!

Glad you think so. Cup sizes hide bottom, middle, who-knows-where. I was trained at a very busy store and got VERY little bar time due to our constant rushes.

I am now getting the rhythm and muscle memory down but feel stuck reading and re-reading the ticket because I'd rather be accurate than fast.

I do the same and I 100% believe it’s better to be accurate than fast

Right, but the pressure is SO REAL on bar and I think this process would cut out a lot of time wasted on ticket reading and ultimately give customers more accurate drinks on average.

I felt the pressure most on Halloween. Slammed all day, each order 4--6 drinks, nonstop rush and THE EYES of people waiting as I worked cafe bar was INTENSE. Plus the whole time I am being told to engage as much as possible but that was SO HARD to do without losing my focus and accuracy.

A ticket reshuffle would have made my life a lot easier and improved my confidence which has now led me to comment here.

Love this idea, always wondered why the stickers didn't print similarly to the way we handwrite cups. I'll post it on the WorkPlace group for technology changes and see if I can get some momentum going for it!
