Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

My DM worked on the floor today (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by paintthatface
Near by stores were closed/had mobiles off so we were slammed on all channels. She randomly stopped by and did a customer support cycle for us and was our window partner so we could give out some breaks. It was a rough day but it was honestly really refreshing to see higher ups actually helping us.

She must started as barista and work her way up! That’s a true DM

She was actually hired as a DM and trained by my old SM. She’s been with the company probably barely a year but she’s a nice lady

oh dope

It’s always nice when an outside hire isn’t awful or weird as hell

I had a DM do this too a few years ago and she was the best! I miss that woman.

The problem with this statement is that this is how it used to be 10 years ago, much more often than it is now, in the past 4 years I’ve not seen our dm lift a finger she barely comes in even when she has meetings scheduled with managers or baristas trying to promote. One person had her no show them 3 times for a meeting that was the final one to become a shift and our store needed 2 new shifts. She couldn’t even be bothered

I mean I don’t disagree, the company has changed a lot. It’s just nice to actually feel a minute of what they always claim to feel for their partners.

My DM and store director has done that for us when the closest Starbucks in closed and we get all their business. Just hop right on register.

It’s honestly more relieving to see they care than actually helpful, they don’t have a lot of on the floor experience but seeing them try really motivates the whole team

alternatively, my sm hop on dto/window to solo during a rush, yet is trying to buy mfin workd series tix on his phone. sigh.

My first DM was like that. She came in one day, I think we'd had two call outs and we were slammed. Put her meeting with our SM on hold and took over DTO/DTR until things calmed down. The SM at the time was great too, always on the floor when he needed to be and was efficient in every position. (Which I feel the need to point out, because my other two corporate SMs were incapable of being in any positions other than POS or warming.)

If I'd had management like that in my last two stores, I might not have quit. I feel like I've watched the company make a steep slide downhill over the last few years. Managers being present and competent and helping to keep the workload manageable makes a huge difference.

My DM is amazing!! she came in a few days ago decked out in this wild bedazzled sweater (which is pretty normal attire for her tbh). She’s also like 4’11, and was yelling at customers that were yelling at us when we were slammed and bought us candy after

i could’ve used a DM like that before i left 😭

Gosh, our DM came in and decided to randomly reorganize our pastry cart during peak. I usually think she's pretty cool, but that was very out of touch. I'm jealous!

My dm would never do that. The DM either says we need to schedule better and or it’s ok if we stay late to catch up

Recently had our dm be let go so our RM came to our store while we were dt only and had a bunch of green beans on the floor and he was PUTTING IN WORK! and asking all of our experienced partners in the floor what he could do to make everything easier on us, modified store hours, changes to when mobiles are on , things of that sort… I was shook.
swallowingpixies 5 points 1y ago
That’s kinda awesome

Our dm helped us yesterday while I was running the shift and my respect for her as only increased from doing so. Higher ups willing to help us should be normalized!

My DM is super amazing and she has been with the company a long time, all the way from barista. Definitely lucky to have her.

That’s really cool!!

God I wish my area manager would do that.. started in a store, no management position and now.. nope

we had our dm on our floor last week, alongside a dm in training and our sm. the floor felt so full

Never even seen my dm and I've been here 2 years :(

If my DM had been like that maybe I'd still be with the company 🥴 ours was more than happy to just sit in the lobby and stare at us while we struggled, then pull baristas off the floor *during* the struggle to chew them out about sequencing or not smiling enough or whatever 🙄 I only saw him on the floor *once* when I first started 2 years back (literally a week into my employment) because it was back when corporate was pushing "connection" between the stores and management. They put him on café bar and put me (the greenest bean on shift!) there as his "babysitter." It was pretty sad that they knew a newbie knew more about bar than a then 4-year DM and could correct his technique/recipes.

My DM and I talk every now and then. I even try to joke around when he’s texting me. That dude will hope on the floor and start sweating doing bar with us. What a freaking guy

Wow my dm would literally never do that but I’m happy you have one who seems human. Mine could see us all dead on the floor and would still get mad that window times aren’t lower.
