Licensed vs. Retail (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by philosopher_cat_lady
Y'all. I'm kind of blown away at how much better it is to work at a licensed Starbucks store than a retail Starbucks store. Here are the advantages I've noticed after a couple days:

\-$15/hour wage rather than $12/hour wage
\-$17/hour wage on Saturdays and Sundays during holiday (Christmas) season
\-15-minute breaks rather than 10-
\-No drive-thru
\-No headsets
\-No mobile orders
\-No delivery
\-Do not clean floors
\-Do not clean restrooms

It may be nicer yes but I depend on my corporate store for college
philosopher_cat_lady [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Yeah, some of my former retail coworkers were only staying for college. I also want to take advantage of the college program, but I wasn't able to, so I may try to go back to working for a retail Starbucks store in the future. Target actually does have a college program though. It doesn't look to be as good as Starbucks' one.

Also:

* in-house maintenance to fix minor things
* no free coffee BUT discount on literally everything in the store
* opening shifts start at 7am instead of 4am
* half of the customers are store employees who are just grateful for caffeine
* only a few tables to clean instead of a whole lobby
* actual security/AP to deal with the crazies
* it’s a family friendly store so no “third place” bs excuse for tolerating bad behavior

I was worried I didn't get free coffee! \*frown\* My store has no tables. I was gonna mention that as an advantage, but they'll come back when the pandemic gets better.

I’ve noticed my stress level has drastically gone down since I left my corporate store for a licensed store. I no longer want to unalive myself at work either because I don’t have to deal with crappy drive thru customers.

Drive-thrus cause customers to dehumanize us much more.

Welcome to Tarbucks! Downside is you work for Target. Lol
philosopher_cat_lady [OP] 2 points 1y ago
You did guess right that I work at Target. There's also a Starbucks in an Albertsons in my city.
snarky_fireball21 3 points 1y ago
Lol the pay gave you away. Target is one of the few retailers that starts off at 15 an hour.

I wish you the best of luck!

True

what do you mean?
imlysscining 6 points 1y ago
You have to follow strict target Ecolab rules and dress code is restrictive. Also by yourself a lot! But I’m a lead and I love my job. SMs at corporate try to steal me a lot, but I refuse. Way easier.
philosopher_cat_lady [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I agree that the dress code isn't as good.
monicamac52 1 points 1y ago
But if you work at Starbucks target, you don’t actually have to work at the target store? Right?
imlysscining 2 points 1y ago
Just don’t say you’re interested in working anywhere else and you should be okay. 🥴

But also lose on basically all the Starbucks benefits which people go for. Plus not all corporate stores have an abusive environment.
philosopher_cat_lady [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Mine did. Exactly why I left. It was a partner abusing me.

but see it depends on the licensed store. I started at licensed and stayed for years and it absolutely wrecked my mental health. you work alone from open to close some days no breaks no one to cover you to go to the bathroom so you have to full on sprint. any launch was your responsibility. my breaking point was being threatened by the dm when i finally got a call back from my current corporate store. when i worked there i was doing all the positions myself, truck orders were my problem, pulling food i did, deep cleaning was my problem. One launch i had to drive to 3 other stores 2+ hours away to set them up and literally do an inspection on them like what dms are supposed to do. When i went to the interview at my current i only took like a 10 cents pay cut.

Yeah, you definitely want your main store to care about staffing the Starbucks properly. I'm a seasonal employee for the holiday/Christmas season, and Target's store director has been given permission to pay lots of payroll. I've been scheduled 39 hours for my first week. She knows I'm very experienced at Starbucks and I was like, "Give me work to do." My paycheck is going to be the best I've ever gotten in my life. When it comes to working at Starbucks, not only is it the luck of the draw as to who your coworkers are, but your work experience is hugely determined by your management. (I had problems with both at my old store!)

Ok, whatever store you worked for was probably breaking laws if they didn't give you breaks. At Target, if no one can cover you, you just take your break instead and leave your department without an employee. No one cares. We're big about taking breaks at our store.

all true, but you work alone sometimes. due to corporate locations in my area closing early, everyone flocks to my store for their frappuccinos at 8:30 pm. and i've had to manage a rush and complete close by myself. 3 weeks into the job.
