I got the job! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sodakinq
Omg I got the job! The manager asked me like 5 questions and told me I was hired. I’ve worked at chipotle for the past three years and I’ve been ready for a change. :,)

any advice or tips would be appreciated! I think I’m worried the most about fitting in to a new work environment… I haven’t been the “new” girl in like 3 years so it’ll be different for sure.

It’s going to get hectic at times
Always take a deep breath and remember… “it’s just beans and water!”
sodakinq [OP] 9 points 1y ago
Yeah, I know. I’ve had 3 years of constant mental breakdowns working at chipotle so I think I can handle hectic. It’s the only job I had, and when I went in there I was so shocked to not see a line out the door (which is what I’m used to. Constant line out the door. ) so honestly I think it will be way more chill… I’ll only be working afternoons so I think that helps.
sodakinq [OP] 5 points 1y ago
All the employees were talking and chilling on there phone and making personal drinks… we were lucky to get a water break at chipotle.

This job made me want to off myself so good luck
Vivid-Cheetah-7693 41 points 1y ago
quit. 🚩

just kidding. kinda. hopefully you have a good store with welcoming partners! it’s definitely different from food, i worked at an applebees for almost 2 years doing to-go. if you can, give yourself 3 months at sbux before you decide if you want to stay or quit. that’s generally when you get the hang of the job!

good luck!
sodakinq [OP] 1 points 1y ago
tysm ! yeah i was planning on giving it the 3 month trial haha, from what it looked like I think I will enjoy it so much more. could have just caught them in a slow period, but it was absolutely dead, especially compared to chipotle at any given time. he reassured me afternoons there aren’t too terrible either and ill just be working afternoons so
Coolbean008 5 points 1y ago
From my personal experience and in training partners,it takes about 6mo. to really master everything at Starbucks and that’s at the basic level. So, I would say extend you 3mo trial to 6 ;)
sodakinq [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Yeah if I don’t feel like I’m absolutely drowning or if it turns out to not be a complete shit show there by 3 months I’ll for sure stay longer! I’d say it took me about that long to actually get really good at my other job so it makes sense. Especially with all the memorization and stuff 😭

SOO MANY THINGS! Crafting espresso drinks are particularly difficult as a beginner.

Tip: I count up to figure out the pumps of syrup and amounts of shots. It goes 122, 345 for hot.

Example:
Tall has: 1 shot espresso, 3 pumps of syrup
Grande: 2 shots, 4 pumps
Venti: 2 shots, 5 pumps

Get it? 122 (shots), 345 (syrup)

For iced everything stays the same with the exception of venti where you +1 to both.

It’s probably confusing now, but it’ll help once you learn more!

So quirky and negative 🤪

Just know it’s same grind different product you’re churning out. I do this job for the benefits (hellooo bachelors degree and actually affordable insurance). Yes it can suck at times, people are a-holes, but honestly from all the other customer facing jobs available in my area, this is by far the best for me. Just don’t be afraid to ask questions and be confident in yourself 😌 you got this!
sodakinq [OP] 3 points 1y ago
yeah, it seems like the best my area has to offer too. Chipotle wasn’t pulling through with the tuition assistance so I’ll try my luck here… also the free drinks and Spotify are a huge bonus for me lol
sorgte 10 points 1y ago
If ur manager hired you on the spot your store is understaffed. Good luck
sodakinq [OP] 2 points 1y ago
yeah that’s what I thought too, but there were like so many people there… more than chipotle ever had at any given time. And it was completely dead, they were all chilling on their phone and making personal drinks and heading to back? maybe caught them on a good day, but not sure. I also had a pretty good reference so im not sure.

You will not remember things you thought you had down and even after a couple years you won’t remember how many shots go in a flat white

🥲🥲🥲🥲 me
Fann-Brulee 3 points 1y ago
Quit lol, any job will pay you more. You won’t get a livable wage unless you’re a shift and even then there’s job that don’t involve customer service that pay more. However, free coffee and Spotify is quite the incentive to keep going ! It is fun sometimes and it really depends on the people you work with, but the work is ok and bearable.
sodakinq [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Also are they not raising to $15 by next year ? I’m not currently renting , just saving my money for when i do move out. it’s better than not having a job and i was at my wits end with chipotle.
Fann-Brulee 2 points 1y ago
There are raises that are going out in January, but it has to do more with tenured partners I believe, but you might be right. I am under the impression that minimum wage is based off state/city. My states capitol has a minimum wage of 15 but since our store is on the outskirts we have it at 13 something. You would be in luck since nearly every store is short staffed so you can always pick up hours!
sodakinq [OP] 1 points 1y ago
That’s true! Also it’s $12 here for starting pay at Starbucks 😔 but it’s literally the same as chipotle so it’s whatever. Chipotle was supposed to give everyone $15 too, but somehow I’m stuck with $12. They were trying to pay me starting pay after being there for 3+ years and paying new hires that absolutely SUCKED more. That’s also a big reason I’m out.. idk if that happens at Starbucks
sodakinq [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Like what kind of jobs? 😭 send me a list cause I need it. I spend too much on Starbucks anyway so I think it’ll be a good change. getting sick of chipotle food too. I’m only planning on keeping the job until I graduate college in about a year so, might as well broaden my horizons I guess ,,, I don’t think it’ll be anything compared to chipotle though.
Coolbean008 4 points 1y ago
Office jobs can pay just as much for WAY less work. Trust, after 4hours of making Frappuccinos your back starts aching, feet hurting. It’s though labor.

I get you, Starbucks was my “stepping stone” job during and right after college. My biggest advice would be to (1) not take everything so SERIOUSLY. Master sequencing, routines and everything, but anything else, don’t take it to heart. If someone coaches you, grow from it and put it behind you. No need to ponder on drama, etc. Do your job, the right thing and that’s it. (2) Try to implement Starbucks culture into your life. What I mean by that is the growth, mindfulness aspect of it. You will see it in the development handbook and models like the LATTE model. Personally, those have helped me as an individual and I’ve totally used them during interviews.
sodakinq [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I mean I’m very used to back pain after leaning over the chipotle line trying to reach food for 8 hours straight full time :,) so I get it. But thank you for the advice! I’m basically just going to work here until I graduate too, then hopefully moving on to bigger better things… definitely not long term. I’ve just worked at chipotle since I was 17 and I’m 20 now so I’m ready for a change. :,) I’m not sure what the LATTE model is yet, I haven’t started, but I’m sure I’ll learn. And I’ll try to research more on it before I start, but again thank you for the advice !

I’ve applied for a couple office jobs, but have never heard back. Looking to get a graphic design job in a bigger city once I graduate tho!
Coolbean008 2 points 1y ago
Anytime! Thank you for reading. Rooting for you and your future ventures!

As a college grad& starting out professional (23yo F), biggest advice is to get an internship before graduation. That makes or breaks your ability to get a job right after college (regardless of where you graduate from) :)

look for a different job ;)
sodakinq [OP] 1 points 1y ago
none in my area pay as good as chipotle or Starbucks except maybe Walmart/target … but heard they can be just as trash if not worse
Babs9220 -2 points 1y ago
Find a different job. Don't you think it's scary she barely interviewed you? No offense to you at all, it's because they are desperate from the horrible work environment making people not want to stay.
sodakinq [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I really doubt that it will be any worse than chipotle. I’m only going there because my coworker went there and said it’s way better and that id like it way more. Three years of constant mental breakdowns because we never had the staff or the supply to keep up with demand of being the only chipotle in my entire town.we have like at least 6 Starbucks and i picked the least busy one in the area. Also I’ll only be working afternoons, about 20-25 hours. I think I would want to die if I worked morning rush.
FragrantWin9 5 points 1y ago
I think that even if you don’t end up Liking Starbucks- You’re on the right track. You were miserable at you last job so you took the initiative to change what makes you unhappy and that’s what’s important! It’s not all that bad. I loved my job for years at bux. But like most things in life- it just gets old. I for sure learned a lot in my time there! And if you want to give it a fair chance- my best advice would be to not browse this subreddit in your first few months-unless you need help with recipes or something of the nature- it tends to get a little negative at times
sodakinq [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Thank you so much for this!! Yeah I’m used to the negativity from the chipotle subreddit 😳 but I’ve mostly been using it to learn more about the job and figure out the dress code and all that ! After I’ve been there for a couple months I’ll probably come back and start complaining ;)
