Wisdom teeth removal (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ianbz
Hey y’all! So next week I’m gonna be getting my wisdom teeth taken out, but I also have to work the following 4 days… if anyone here had their wisdom teeth taken out, what was it like working after and how many days did you need to recover? I just wanna make sure everyone in my store is prepared and staffed just in case

I had my bottom teeth taken out under local anaesthesia and it took me 2 to 3 days to not feel like a hamster. Take the days off, you'll need them. I promise.

I agree with take the days off.
ianbz [OP] 4 points 1y ago
I don’t mind LOOKING like a hamster, the mask /might/ help a lot. It’s the pain I’m most worried about haha. Thanks for the advice!

Pain for me was tolerable (with meds) but I accidentally ate a bit of my bottom lip while it was still asleep, and maaaan that killed. Don't be a superhero, take pain meds, get some rest, ice your cheeks and drink lots of fluids. Good luck!

I’m gonna add to this. When I got 2 teeth pulled, while my grandma was out getting my meds I took it upon myself to rip out my gauze and take a nap in a drugged out haze. Please don’t be an idiot like me. I’m guessing you have someone to bring you home/get your meds afterwards? If you think the anesthesia might make you act a lil crazy, tell them to keep an extra eye on you 🥴

LOL thankfully I will have someone with me. So sorry that happened to you 💀
ianbz [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Oooof I hope I can avoid doing that haha. Thank you so much!

when i got my wisdom teeth taken out, i only took the day right afterwards off and i /so/ regretted it. i had a bad reaction to the anesthetic drugs they gave me and was throwing up for about three days afterwards. i came into work one of those days bc my shift convinced me, but then i threw up while there so lmao :/ better err on the side of caution and ask for a few more days off!
ianbz [OP] 6 points 1y ago
This is all the convincing I needed haha. Truly a fear of mine to have to puke at work considering I work in a cafe-only store during morning peak with only 1 bathroom 🥴
sofso 2 points 1y ago
i'm glad my suffering could at least be of assistance to someone LMAO hope ur surgery goes better than mine! you'll want to stock up on jello for the recovery too :)
ianbz [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Haha will do, thanks for the tips!

I had all 4 taken out and a bone graft put in and I was out like 4 days. I tried to come back after 2 but the pain was really bad from the bone grafts
hautmess 3 points 1y ago
For me I had to have a whole surgery done but it wasn’t that bad. I went back to work about 3-4 days after and I had already stopped bleeding by day 4 so it wasn’t terrible working. It just hurt a lot having to do DTO since I couldn’t move my mouth a whole lot without worry of messing up my sutures.

But tbh take the days off, you’ll need the rest for sure, especially if they give you strong medication.
mollythewiz 3 points 1y ago
you’ll need a week to not feel horrible
Obamnasoda4 3 points 1y ago
I took a week off. My manager was mad but I needed it and glad I didn’t take any less. Obviously you also can’t be on pain meds while at work so you’ll have to wait until you can go cold with no pain, which for me took about a week… had all 4 out in March
Ks1212000 2 points 1y ago
Omg I had the worst pain ever and was only manageable with Vicodin and edibles. Although I did get an infection courtesy of my dentist not prescribing me the right antibiotics I was out a whole two weeks. I couldn’t talk for a week either. Wishing you the best recovery and remember DONT drink through straws!
peachyyybabeee 2 points 1y ago
when im getting mine out im going to take the full weeks off..better be safe than sorry! every body reacts differently PLUS if you happen to have a complication, you don’t need to worry about finding coverage
ianbz [OP] 2 points 1y ago
True! I think I’ll be able to get about 6 days off so I should be good by Sunday to work again (hopefully)
writingqueen22 2 points 1y ago
when i got my wisdom teeth removed i felt fine the day after tbh, i was just a little swollen! but honestly i would take at least the first day after to rest and recover!
dogsofwintergaming 2 points 1y ago
I'd say plan now to miss at least the day after and let your SM know it may be more. Such a procedure and recovery thereafter is unarguably covered by sick time policy. Use the sick time you earn and deserve to use and get paid to sit at home and recover.
tiredbarista61937 2 points 1y ago
This isn’t exactly an answer to your question, but I’ve seen several people say that if you drink a can or two of pineapple juice in the days leading up (especially the day before) it helps with the swelling and pain! Might be worth a try if you need the hours, but even then I say take a day off. You deserve it :)
ianbz [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Omg I remember reading that and totally forgot about it!! Thank you so much for reminding me, you could be the potential reason for this procedure going much easier on me LOL

Haha guess it’s time to finally put those sick hours to use. Thanks for the heads up!

i had all 4 removed in august and though mine went well as none were impacted and my pain was relatively less compared to others, i say take off. first of all, there’s the chance you could react badly to meds and you’ll want to just lie down. second, you honestly can’t eat much afterwards because (in my case) my gums were so swollen they partially covered my other molars and i couldn’t chew, plus the risk of getting food in my gum/wound scared me, so i barely ate for two days. because of that, you can be super lightheaded and at risk for fainting, which we all know is very possible with the way starbucks is with all the running around. i was prescribed hydrocodone but didn’t take it as i was nervous about becoming addicted, so i took tylenol with ibuprofen combined every 4-6 hours and though it helped, it was still pretty rough. best of luck with your surgery and recovery!
ianbz [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Yeah definitely better to play it safe. Thank you so much!!

Results can vary drastically. Some people terrible pain for days, some people have no pain at all. You should definitely not work at least the day of and the next day because you’ll have bandages in your mouth which really makes every little thing difficult. Even just drinking water is super difficult. And it’s very important that the bandages are kept in place and changed properly. They will give you a lot of instructions on how to care for your wounds and you need to follow them carefully to avoid infections and other complications which is difficult to do when you’re working several hours on your feet at a stressful place like Starbucks. I worked after having just one tooth removed and I really regretted it. Also, if you opted to be unconscious for the procedure the stuff they use to knock you out can actually make some people very sick for a whole day. I was actually bed ridden just from the that the first night and the whole next day.
ianbz [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I’m sorry the anesthesia affected you like that!! I’m worried it’ll be the same for me :/ thank you for the advice!
Distinct-Apartment39 2 points 1y ago
I got 2 molars removed a few weeks ago. I couldn’t even talk for 3 days the pain was so bad (probably partially due to infections in the tooth) I def don’t recommend working the day after AT LEAST
serenityforeva3 2 points 1y ago
It really depends. I got my wisdom teeth taken out and went to school the next day and took an exam. The pain meds really helped me & my surgeon was great so I had no issues afterword. I would just explain to your boss the situation.
ianbz [OP] 1 points 1y ago
True but I feel like sedentary things like school will be easier to deal with. Starbucks during peak would be a whole different situation with all the stress and constant movement
greenbeanfridge 2 points 1y ago
Take at least the first day after surgery to just chill. Even if you’re able to get up and get around, you’re going to be in pain. They’ll survive! Take care of yourself!
SunBusiness8291 1 points 1y ago
Honeyyyyy pleaseeeee. You cannot work until AT LEAST day 3-4 after. Reboot.
