why don’t customers see we’re understaffed/slammed and change their minds more often?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by lat3spr1ng
it’s like the rush doesn’t stop anyone. if it were me i’d see the state of my store today and never come back on a saturday. wish me luck for the rest of my shift.
death2capitalism2295 points1y ago
we always have a line out the drive thru every single fucking day and people will still join and complain that they’re late, we’re taking too long… etc. bitch you made the conscious decision to do this 😩
1partwitch168 points1y ago
I love when there’s a huge line, someone waited in that huge line, then they grab the first drink they see at the handoff counter and say “is this mine?” Remember ALL the people before you? Yeah their drinks will come out before yours too.
lat3spr1ng [OP]55 points1y ago
THIS ONE TOO

THIS. THIS COMMENT.
ProletarianProblems50 points1y ago
That’s when I share a personal story about how I make coffee at home and how it only takes a fraction of the time. Make those passive aggressive ✨customer connections✨
Vort3x_777 points1y ago
I love this
cadmus18906 points1y ago
Bold of you to think the legions are critically thinking before consuming
BenignNemesis8 points1y ago
You're right, they're nearly zombies mindlessly shuffling their way to the bux. "MUST... CONSUME..." But at least zombies wont cuss at you when you run out of brains. Instead, they just go find more elsewhere. In this sense zombies are smarter than some customers.
dahmerpalms187 points1y ago
I would never in a million years wait 15+ minutes for a couple $5+ lattes. I don’t understand why so many customers are willing to lol
lat3spr1ng [OP]83 points1y ago
last week we were so busy i was working POS and oven with the line out the door and had to warn every customer “okay your order will be at least a 20 minute wait is that okay with you?” and ONE person changed their mind.
Johnas4738 points1y ago
Yeah you tell them it’ll be a 20 minute wait and then they complain it’s been 15 minutes??? Like bitch I TOLD YOU
penis-ylvania13 points1y ago
Or when someone orders an iced London fog and I tell them with how busy it is it’ll take at least 10 min (licensed store) and they come up and complain that their drink hasn’t come out yet
aleksndrars10 points1y ago
Lol someone asked me once how long a traveler would take and I said about ten minutes so they ordered 3 and I said ok that'll be about 20 maybe 25 minutes and he was like thought you said ten? 😑
snowflakenecklace12 points1y ago
i always had my register person tell people when it would be a 15+ wait, and a lot of people would actually just leave. but a lot would stay, and then be mad when they found out we actually meant 15+ minute waits! like no, i didn't tell you because i thought it would be funny. waits are actually like this! see the amount of people here? use ya noggin.
knitandcurls3 points1y ago
I do the same thing. I have them add on that they can get a drip coffee or a hot tea with no wait at all. I also then have my register partner grab unheated pastries so that they can grab their stuff and go. That seems to really work. It cuts down the line for your bar/warming partners and gets the customer out quick. Most people don’t take us up on it but the ones that have 1/2 a brain do and they actually appreciate it.
spacespecterr3 points1y ago
legit had a ssv telling people it would take about 15-20 minutes to get a single drink the other day — only one lady left, and it was with a MASSIVE attitude. she stomped out of the store, right past the café full of people waiting, and right through the giant DT line wrapped around our building, cursing about how ridiculous it was… apparently they expect a different outcome when they see those things. like they’re special, and THEIR coffee needs to come out right NOW. forget the other 20 customers waiting before them.
whitehouses71 points1y ago
Honestly sometimes it's nice to just sit in your car and listen to a podcast or music. When I worked at Starbucks I felt the same, but I love just getting in the line and listening to something without thinking about driving.
NeonCloudAstro34 points1y ago
They’re all addicted to sugar.
emileeavi13 points1y ago
To be fair, whenever I go to starbucks I go when I have a bunch of time so it could take an hour and I'd be chill about it 🤣
_stupefy7 points1y ago
Honestly make coffee at home or buy something at the gas station. I will never understand why people will wait so long for a latte. Especially when they see it’s only a couple of people working who are struggling.
RareLingonberry81 points1y ago
I’ve literally seen people wait over 30 minutes just to get into the building to order
victorious_gem60 points1y ago
my thing is, if you really want the coffee && are "willing" to wait over 10+ minute, I DON'T WANNA HEAR ABOUT IT!
Royal_Development_251 points1y ago
ikr!!Or just place a mobile order so you won't have to wait so fucking long!!!
Js_On_My_Yeet58 points1y ago
"Bunch of fucking teenage baristas made me late for work today."
Tell that to your boss. I fucking dare you.
BatWeary17 points1y ago
even funnier considering every single person on the floor besides myself is over 20
alteredrealityz33 points1y ago
one time we were getting slammed in cafe and this guy says that it will be our fault if he loses his job from being late,,sir u saw the dozens of people waiting inside and still ordered
luvduvbunny29 points1y ago
I don’t understand the logic too. I’ve had people be upset that they were late to work or something else, and I’m thinking “you clearly see there are a million people ahead of you, why don’t you LEAVE????” A $7.00 drink isn’t worth it
Hypervix3024 points1y ago
The people who HONK on the drive thru line, as if that's somehow going to get them their drinks faster?!?!? They infuriate / baffled me
AppaloosaLuver6 points1y ago
I've had people behind me do this at Chick Fil Et, too. Like, c'mon bud, we're all in the same boat here, we all saw the line, we all signed up for this
unnecessary-helium18 points1y ago
It makes me absolutely livid when people order in the cafe but of course the ticket is buried behind like 60 mobile orders, which isn’t their fault, but they complain that people that “came after them” (usually people coming in to pick up their mobiles) get their drinks first. My coworkers and I are working as fast as we can and trying our best to make drinks in the order that tickets come through. I promise you we are trying to get you out of the cafe as quick as possible and are not purposely not making your drink. You ordered like 2 minutes ago and I’m still pulling stickers that came through 15 minutes ago because we’re so backed up. Also shout out to the sweet lady that told me I was doing a great job on cafe bar and tipped us $5 today <3
interyx6 points1y ago
We're getting those production controller iPads for this. I can't decide whether I like it or not.
boxinghamster1612 points1y ago
IPad does not help if you don't even have time to look through it for the cafe orders you need 🙃 speaking from personal experience. I like the idea of it but the execution is flawed
interyx5 points1y ago
Yeah that's what I mean. Our district gets everything absolutely last cause our market is so small but I can imagine trying to manage that stupid thing while also barring your arms off.
FfierceLaw17 points1y ago
I wonder the same thing. There are just too many of them. When I was a kid going places with my parents, if there was a crowd, they turned us around and went the other way, we found something else to do . That behavior has persisted with me
Eboy7788879778815 points1y ago
Customers walks in*
Baristas: Welcome
Customers: Walks to the bar person* Can I have a venti iced white mocha (in a loud voice like they own the place)
Bar barista, I am the sorry but the person on register can take your order for you!
Customer: Can I have venti iced white mocha with extra vsc foam and Carmel drizzle (Revenge on the barista for not taking my order! Mûhaha
Bar barista, Makes it decaf*
Every partner in the store: Thankyou for coming in!
juicyspitwater2 points1y ago
did this once to a lady who walked in for a mobile order. it was an americano with stevia, she walks in with her huge fucking sunglasses. she doesn’t grab anything off the handoff bar so i ask her if she had a mobile order, yes. she does. I find her sticker, proceed to let her know we ain’t got stevia bitch, she said more pumps of the sf vanilla. Cool, I let her know her drink will be coming right up on my sequence and to just hang tight. Cuz the person before her ordered 3 fraps and 2 refreshers and they only got half of their order cuz I had to stop and talk to her. Anywhooooo, I had no problem with previously mentioned lady until I was shaking a refresher, turn around to see if any new customers had walked in, and she stares at me and yells loud AF “IS IT COMING UP YET?” I told her yes her shots are pulling and i’ll be finishing it up next. Now she ordered half-caf so me being the stubborn person I am decided, imma give this bitch anything but half-caf. I put blonde. and only blonde. hope she didn’t sleep that night.
coconutncracka5 points1y ago
i would be 100% on your side but putting blonde shots in her drink when she asked for half caf is just wrong :( i totally get putting just decaf shots, but if someone orders a drink with decaf, it’s the same with milks: you make it the way they asked. it’s not because “starbucks standard” it’s just the plain fact that it’s a health risk.
even if she purposefully order half decaf to be a pain, you don’t know if more caffeine could put her at risk of a reaction, fatal or not.
sh3nan1gans_15 points1y ago
Saturdays are the worst especially when understaffed. We’ve been short three people all week, and customers feel so entitled to have their coffee right then and now, but don’t realize we really have one person on all drinks on top of hella multiple and delivery orders..
Kindly_Visual12 points1y ago
them: *actively sees us pulling 25+ stickers after they JUST ORDERED* them: “i’m late for work, i need mine in 3 minutes”
SilkyOatmeal10 points1y ago
The few times I've gone this fall when things got really bad, I \*still\* got great service. The wait was always because of the customers, as far as I could tell. Baristas were still nailing it. Plus, other chain coffee shops kinda suck. Caribou coffee tastes terrible to me. Bigby and Dunkin' Donuts are super tacky compared to Starbucks. Panera Bread is an ok experience but the coffee is meh. Nothing against the employees there, but those stores just don't appeal to me.
friendlySkeletor10 points1y ago
There's 3 coffee stands with better coffee within 5 minutes of my location. One even is one of those ones w cute girls in lacey bras. People still wait 20 minutes in our drivethrough.
BuffyBoltonVampFlayr5 points1y ago
I'm from/live in Seattle.. nothing changed during the height of the pandemic. People were/are still waiting 30 mins in line to order, in cafe, in dt, for mobiles.
I was/am really ashamed that so many people were bitching their minds off about how closing to shelter in place was so terrible for local businesses, yet it seemed no one thought or cared to go *support* those local coffee shops, that are literally allllll over the place, when the business opened back up.
friendlySkeletor2 points1y ago
I'm in Spokane and it was honestly worse. I escaped it bc the job i was doing at the time was a grave shift but I saw hour long lines for coffee, no masks, etc. At a couple places in town. I felt guilty grabbing energy drinks at the gas station.
Assiqtaq9 points1y ago
I was in the same boat. Went in today, I was the opener because my manager had a funeral to go to, so called out. Closer came in at 12. Normally this isn't too much of an issue, bit of a long day but not terrible. Today the line just would not stop. I was out of milk by the time my closer came in, and I just watched groups of people join in the line, thinking to myself "can't go anywhere else, can't make coffee at home?"
official_koda_9 points1y ago
I’ve literally decided not to eat somewhere after seeing a line of like three cars so it amazes me that people sit for fifteen mins for overrated and overpriced drinks. Even worse when they complain how long it takes…like sorry you’re too stupid to realize a long line means it’s gonna take a long time
philosopher_cat_lady8 points1y ago
Because they feel entitled to your product and service and have nothing better to do with their time than wait in a line for a very long time for a self-serving reason. The other day I went to Popeyes, which at the time was not letting customers order inside, and the drive-thru line was not moving, so I left. It wasn't because I was bothered, it was because I knew the staff operating the store was too small to handle the number of customers they had. It's also a daily occurrence in my city for lines at Chick-fil-A and Raising Canes to extend into a street. Today, Taco Bell had one as well because they are not letting customers go inside. First of all, fuck you for breaking the law and parking on the street; second of all, you're stupid because you could simply drive around to another entrance of the parking lot. But just as bad as that is a customer who enters a long Starbucks drive-thru line then complains, "Can I tell you I have NEVER spent this long in a drive-thru line at Starbucks." I knew she was lying; of course, she's waited that long in a drive-thru line at Starbucks. It's Starbucks. They don't staff our stores. They don't know how to limit the shit people do in a drive-thru so that the line can move at a reasonable pace. The part that's bad is that she willingly entered the line seeing that it's one you can't leave.

I had customers screaming at me and my GM the other day when we were desperately trying to explain that we only had 1 espresso machine working and I had to funnel all dt and cafe drinks thru one machine one at a time. they did not care to listen and just kept piling around the handoff. they cannot read a room (or listen to the literal words we are saying to them) for shit
drinkliquidclocks6 points1y ago
I wouldn't go inside or mobile but I don't mind waiting in a drive through for 15-20 mins, I do it all the time. I just watch YouTube or listen to music. Its a restaurant, I don't think it's wrong for a customer to want to purchase product from an open store.
celloqueer5 points1y ago
I don’t think op is angry necessarily that ppl want to wait a long time to get stuff, just surprised, because I personally would not have that patience and therefore would head out lol. If you want to wait we’ll make you your stuff, just don’t be one of the people in a rush as if you didn’t see our line
drinkliquidclocks1 points1y ago
Yeah I get it, I work there too...
lat3spr1ng [OP]2 points1y ago
yeah when I say wait I mean like we were behind by 30 minutes to an hour on mobiles for multiple hours
drinkliquidclocks1 points1y ago
How are customers rolling up to the store supposed to know that? 🤨
4shotsin5 points1y ago
Customizations kill us. Our drinks taste so much better with less modifications. I finally realized our drinks are handcrafted to taste amazing just as they are made. I wish our customers would realize that.
daisy-trbl5 points1y ago
had a guy complain that he had to wait in the drive through for fifteen minutes only to come inside anyways (he wanted TWO travelers)
flower_garden_3 points1y ago
Wtf. What a terrible person. I had that happen once during a peak too, but ours doesn't have a drive through. The guy was so rude because he ordered 2 travelers and had to ~25 minutes while we were dealing with his order, our mobile/curbside and other cafe orders too. My coworker actually got his info/business card and left him a bad review saying that's he treats service workers like trash.
JustAnotherUBStudent5 points1y ago
I feel that! We were almost 35 minutes behind on tickets during our peak today and had almost 80 sales in our peak 30 mins
IndividualRuin66755 points1y ago
i have this thought literally every day i work. i work at a mall and i have literally seen people wait an hour+ to even get into the store.. like for what?
National-Chance24064 points1y ago
i put my 2 weeks in today , i’ve had enough
mama_bibi4 points1y ago
What I dont understand is when they leave negative reviews saying we're understaffed. Like yes. Yes we are. So are a lot of other places. Like maybe instead of reviewing it you could maybe get on our side and be sympathetic and understand. Ya know. Just maybe have a heart and be human since we ourselves are humans not robots
francescugh3 points1y ago
why do ppl try to “skip” the long line by going inside like u think we got a whole separate team just for dt nah girl
AccomplishedCut47843 points1y ago
I had to give a bunch of refunds yesterday bc people were being impatient. Listen you entered the store, saw it was crowded, and still decided to order…
dyeforthehype3 points1y ago
Last weekend we had a line out to the highway at drive thru and they're wondering why it takes them time to get their orders. It seems to just embolden them.
g71302 points1y ago
I will pass if a place is busy. I won’t wait longer than 10 min at a restaurant for a table either. Time is finite and I value mine, there is so little time to be wasting waiting for “wants.”
[deleted]2 points1y ago

zoop10002 points1y ago
A lot of people do probably not get in line when they see 20 cars in the drive thru. I bet if all the people that changed their mind about getting in line just got in line anyways, the lines would be 4x as long. The lines you have are just the max amount people are willing to wait.
Mintymariah2 points1y ago
I crack up and slightly die when my green beans ask me this🥲
snowflakenecklace2 points1y ago
before i worked here, i really like the avocado spread and would sometimes come in to literally just buy a couple things of it. that's all i would get. occasionally when we'd stop, i'd walk in, see the line, and walk right back out. and i wasn't even gonna have to wait for a drink!!! just in the order line! still not worth it.
mischievoushannah2 points1y ago
Because they don’t care.
RubidiumRB1 points1y ago
I work at a Starbucks inside a Safeway, where there’s at most 2 baristas at a time. Most the time it’s just one. I will get people see that it’s just me, and still order 3-6 Frappuccino’s. We also only have one blender. They don’t care. They have the audacity to apologize for how much they’re ordering but continue to order it anyways.
dolliified1 points1y ago
because they quite literally just don't care. it's unfortunately that simple 😞
gymnamind1 points1y ago
This one time my asm (outside hire literally knows like nothing) was on register and took this ladies order right. It’s peak were super super busy trying to get drinks done and there’s a lot of people in cafe. Not even 5 minutes later she starts complaining “where’s my drink” and I asked her name and told her we haven’t started on it and then made a hissy fit Bc apparently my asm ended the conversation at the register with “well we’re working on that for you we’ll have it right out” and she interpreted that as “oh I’m in the front and my drinks getting made before all of these people’s” anyways I was busy and then my ASM had the audacity to come through and start pulling a shit ton of stickers (talking like 20) trying to find hers Bc she wanted to rush hers and I had to tell her to back off Bc we were going based on who’s here first even if she complained. Ugh annoying
thedeadwillwalk1 points1y ago
Because the need for entitlement is far stronger than efficiency and practicality.
jy_mee1 points1y ago
I straight up told customers that wait times for café was 20-25min today. I didn't care, my partners we exhausted I was beat and we were understaffed. We had so many mobiles coming in, everyone died this morning.
Royal_Development_251 points1y ago
We've also been busy all day!! There was one customer who almost got into an accident because one cut in front of the other, so they started cursing each other out! And we get a lot of people asking us how long their drink would take at the cafe window and I literally want to tell them to stop asking!! Like if you have somewhere to be then fucking place a mobile order!!! It's not hard!! AND for the Karen's out there who gets mad at us for being slow and taking our time, actually work at Starbucks and see how much hell it is!!! We're always hiring 🤬🤬
Hazel_is_Trans0 points1y ago
I new and a slow so I'm usually the only case for long line
knitandcurls1 points1y ago
And your bar partners love you for it. It helps pace the line better so that they aren’t swamped over there. Keep your head up and just do the best you can. No one can reasonably expect more of you than that and the rest can fuck off.
