newish sbux barista worried about not learning fast enough(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sk3l3tonh4v3r
Hi guys :)
I started working at a decently busy starbucks at the beginning of november, and i'm worried my coworkers are getting frustrated with me for not learning fast enough. I am very good at DTO/R already and can enter custom drinks super quickly/connect with customers well, but working on bar these last couple shifts has been a different story. I messed up the sugar cookie frappuccino four times in a row today, and constantly have to ask if x y or z gets a b or c syrup/topping, almost on every drink. I'll get placed on drive thru bar and get told to go back to DTO/R within 30ish minutes because of how long it takes me to make drinks. Is this a common occurrence? Did you have a similar experience when starting? And how long did this period of being basically useless last for you? I'm worried that my coworkers are getting upset with me for not picking things up faster.

The beginning of November as in like last week? Cut yourself some slack! It took me probably two months to get comfortable on bar to the point where I felt like I could do it by myself. I’ve heard people say give yourself 6 months before you quit because that’s when shit clicks, Ive heard up to a year too… Its a big learning curve with terrible training. I’m sure you’re doing great!

Just getting to the two month mark myself and this is definitely the case especially with the recent holiday rollout. I still have only some idea what I'm doing at any given station haha.

First of all, why are they putting you on DRIVE THROUGH BAR. That’s where the most experienced partners are placed because they need the drinks out fast. It takes a while to learn and why would they place you there while you’re learning?? Take your time, you will learn with practice!! It’s not your fault

I also told people I was training that it takes about two months to feel comfortable on bar. And that the people around you want you to succeed and it was okay to ask questions, even if it’s the same question over and over. My motto is Fail Fast, Learn Quickly. The more you screw something up, the faster you’ll learn to get it right. You’ve got this.

Omg! I’m so glad you posted this because I too started in the beginning of November and feel the EXACT same way! I was put on Drive Thru bar and I was so slow and backed up they had to get people to help me and everyone is very reassuring after it all that I’m doing a good job and I appreciate it but in the moment when I’m on drive thru bar they can’t help but get frustrated as me being slow affects them as well and I’m trying not to be so hard on myself either and keep telling myself that I’m still learning but I feel you. At this moment in time I dread getting out on bar even though I know I just need to practice. Just know you’re not alone and I hope it gets better for you as well ❤️

Seriously, you have nothing to worry about. I've been everything from a barista to manager over the last 10 years, and no one has ever had everything down in only a matter of weeks. The usual progression for a new barista is at 3mo, you're comfortable, 6mo, you ACTUALLY know what you're doing, and 9-12mo you're ready to take on additional challenge. Of course, everyone moves at their own pace, but be easy on yourself. You're doing better than you think/feel, and if your coworkers can't take a moment to reflect on a time when they were green beans, well, not to be harsh, but their opinion isn't worth absorbing.

hey dude you are all good. i started in july and sometimes still need help. we are doing $56k+ per week so it’s not a slow store. i get moved around when it gets extra crazy. i would say get bar time during the slow times but it is all over the place nowadays

I'm new too. If you're worried about that i have a tip for you. Download the starbucks app and see the menu. Each drink has under it everything it contains so you can check that.

I’ve been here since May & still ask questions from time to time. You’re human. They’ll live.

Takes a while to feel fully comfortable- I would go home and write down over and over the basic cups and how many syrups and shots they get until I memorized it, you should get flash cards for the bevs and try that way. I know someone who is fast on bar but they always have their little notebook with recipes ontop of the bean hopper
