Obligatory disclaimer: I'm not a barista, but I am a frequent customer.
I enjoy going to my local starbucks regularly, and I tip as much and as often as I can. Lately I've been heartbroken seeing all the angry people that come through, so I do my absolute best to be as simple and respectful as possible, to offset the trash.
Unfortunately, I love coffee but can't have too much in the way of stimulants. Caffeine makes me nauseous and shaky and there have been days where I just vomit and spend the rest of the day in bed. So, since I'm a PSL slut, I always get decaf.
Cut to yesterday. It's a crisp Saturday, perfect PSL weather. I meander in, greet everyone, request my order, and go sit in a squishy chair. I take a few sips and sit quietly -- and the buzz starts to hit.
I'm panicked. It's clearly caffeinated. I will definitely feel crappy if I finish it. But people are so RUDE to these sweet employees. I don't want to make it worse. I let my anxiety run through my head for a bit before finally deciding I will ask as politely as possible.
I go up to the counter, and get someone's attention. Since I'm so embarrassed, and so upset I have to be That Person, I'm speaking very quietly. Like four baristas come over, asking what's wrong -- my face shows emotions too well. I start blabbering. "I'm so sorry, I know you guys are super busy, and I wouldn't be asking if it weren't for the fact I'll get sick, but is there any way I can have this remade as decaf? I'm so sorry, I'm totally happy to wait for a while--"
The barists cut me off and jump in with a chorus of "Oh my god, of course! No problem! All good! We'd be happy to!"
Like thirty seconds later, I get a lovely decaf PSL, with "Sorry! ♡" on the cup, and I about cried.
Thank you, Starbies, for helping this poor anxious wreck. Love you all.
