Questions about Different Roles(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by vanilla_cola_
Hey! I’m looking to apply at a Starbucks near me sometime soon! I’ve always worked retail, not fast food, but it seems like a job i’d enjoy (i hope) :)
I just had a quick question about the duties of a shift supervisor—i have about 4 years experience working retail, and so i meet the qualification (1 year retail experience)—but i don’t understand what the job entails just from the job description.
The store near me has both a barista and shift supervisor role open for hiring, so i was just wondering the differences!

You’re responsible for all the duties a barista is responsible for, but you’re also in charge of things like running breaks/positioning, inventory, food pulls, etc
Honestly the bump in pay is nice but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you need the $ that the shift supervisor position pays. It’s a whole lot of extra stress lol

This was the vibe i was getting but i wasn’t sure. I’m conflicted because the extra $ would be nice, but having not worked in an environment so fast paced before i thought i might be getting in over my head. Thank you!

I would definitely recommend starting as a barista first, learning that role, and then applying for a shift position. And if you say that's what you want to do in your interview I think that will reflect well on you to the store manager.
I had worked both retail and food service for about ten years before I started at Starbucks and it still took me a few months to learn everything that is particular to the Starbucks barista job.

I think starting as a barista is best cuz being a barista is incredibly hard itself, but if you pick it up easily you can always express wanting to promote

Typically you’re hired on as a barista, and from there you can make your way up to a shift supervisor. In an interview you can express your willingness to become one, however it is a competitive spot that will normally go to someone who has been with the company and understands already how to run the store/ make all the product and train/ coach people on how to do the same

This is what i thought! I just wasn’t sure what was best to do since the position was posted online. Thank you!

I got hired about 10 months ago as a barista, and then quickly promoted to SSV. IMO, being a shift is more $$ and less stress, especially as a mid/closer. 🤗 You have a fair amount of influence on the attitude and vibe of the store, so you can make it feel more happy and lighthearted too so thats another fun part.
