I did it! I walked out during a shift!(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Mayachees
I did it. I walked out during a shift.
Today was a awful horrible day. Not the worst day I have worked at Starbucks, but the final straw.
I was the closing shift supervisor tonight and I came in to a mess. This is pretty consistent for Sundays. My SM never schedules enough people on Sundays. We did get her to turn Mobiles off, but we had lines to order in the cafe pretty consistently. We couldn’t keep up with backups/dishes. Trash was overflowing everywhere. Customers were mad because we are out of mocha, Caramel Brûlée, iced Sugar Cookie syrups. Oh and no straws. Partners were having panic attacks.
One partner became so stressed they threw up (in the bathroom). And had to go home. I asked to close the lobby. Because food count still needed to be done. Pastry pull needed to be done. The partner that left at 7 needed her break. The DT partner needed her meal. I would need a meal. There was cold brew that needed to be pulled at 3 just sitting there. We needed to make 4 toddies of cold brew. Oh and ALL of the closing stuff that hadn’t even been started.
The SM said no. The DM doesn’t want the lobby closed if there are 3 partners in the floor. But with people on their meals and me doing shift stuff there wouldn’t be. 🤦🏼♀️
I got written up a week and a half ago and one of the things on there was “breaking federal labor laws by keeping partners past 9pm”. But how am I supposed to get them out on time???
Oh and there is no federal labor law that I was breaking.
Anyway the SM called the store and said “Do NOT close the lobby”. I said “if we can’t close the lobby then you need to come close, because there is to much stuff to do. “ She said: “We are not having this conversation over the phone. I am on my way and when I get there you will leave” Then she hung up.
Well if she wanted me to leave, I was going to leave. I went to the back and got my stuff. Took my keys and set them on the counter and told the Partners that those are for SM. Then I left.
It felt so good!
Thanks for coming to my TedTalk.

Call PCC and let them know ASAP about the "hostile" conversation you had on the phone along with the work environment. You may not want to keep there, but that manager sounds like they need to be held accountable. Also, bring up the written warning about labor laws as that is a false accusation. You can at least save face and still use Starbucks as a reference then, especially with your shift supervisor title.

I do have my copies of my write up paperwork here at home.
Mayachees [OP]40 points1y ago
What is the number?
The_walking_man_42 points1y ago
call the Partner Contact Center at (888) SBUX-411 (7289-411) for assistance. One of the options is partner resources and/or ethics and compliance.

Call, report, do what you should be doing for the people you left behind. However, do curb your expectations. Don't expect shit to be fixed. DO expect Starbucks to cover their corporate ass as hard as they possibly can. They won't make anything up for you, more likely than not. (It IS possible, just very unlikely.) They also may not do anything directly against the store manager, because they may have nothing they can do without making the corporation lose money, and that will trump nearly everything else. But if you say nothing, then nothing will be done. So yes please, speak up as loudly and harshly as you can, and cover your own ass at least has hard as you expect they will cover their own.

agreed, i called ethics on my ex-SM that got me fired via retaliation and false claims and nada happened to her. im taking it to the labor board now
Assiqtaq1 points1y ago
Keep trying.

This is really good advice. Report that sh*t. 3 people is not enough to run a drive thru store.
RareGull16 points1y ago
Someone wanna tell my manager that?
AndrewtheRey16 points1y ago
Drop your stores phone # and managers name and I will /s
but if you want me to I can 👀👀👀
hellopie710 points1y ago
Fuggen do it bruh, have them DM that shizz to you. Heck I'll do it too. I know my old store was the same exact way.
boothbygraffoe55 points1y ago
Well done. No-one should be treated like this let alone an entire team of people.
FfierceLaw52 points1y ago
What is wrong with her, she should have been coming to help you, not to fire you! What a horrible SM! I do hope you complain about her, she deserves it
Mayachees [OP]68 points1y ago
I honestly think she has had an issue with me since I started because I would hold her accountable for her BS. I was the department manager for a licensed store Starbucks (in a Kroger) before I started at this store. I basically had ASM training and I had to memorize the manuals for my DM. So I know a lot of Starbucks policies better than she does.
I also put partners first above sales. Don’t get me wrong I can make some sales. I can upsell with the best of them. But the partners matter, and I was always advocating for them. She didn’t like that.

That's awesome! I walked out in 2018 (also a supervisor) when our new manger made me work at 4:30am while 7 months pregnant and refused to allow me any other shift. She had me on customer support and was constantly berating me for not cycling correctly (our previous sm had never even taught us customer support cycles). Walked over to the hospital and my blood pressure was dangerously high and told me I'd likely be placed on bed rest if I kept that job, so I just didn't go back 🤷🏻♀️

I’m sorry you went through that and I’m glad you got out of that situation! I hope you’re feeling way better!
aerkyanite20 points1y ago
Better luck on your next gig. I think you did the right thing.
jazzysoranio17 points1y ago
I truly hope the best for you and that you find a much better job that effectively uses your skills and hard work. Starbucks used to be a haven for artists, independent contractors, single mothers, and college students who just needed a job that fit their life needs. But they’ve gone from being the lifestyle job to being a talent vacuum. Too many talented and hard-working people are getting sucked into Starbucks and wasting their potential thinking that it’ll lead somewhere. It used to be the best place for talented individuals to get on their feet and support themselves, but now it’s just a trap where talented people go to get stuck and struggle to escape.
evilprozac795 points1y ago
And it just sucks the life out of you.

Definitely call the PCC. My team had call-outs today and I got Mobiles off for them, closed the lobby, and added some snacks to the milk I instacarted. Not much of a help, but I did what I could (typically I'm there with them Sundays but this was my birthday weekend so I used some vaycay to hang out with the wife.)
SMs HAVE TO support their team and uplift their SSVs. Hope you find happiness in your next venture.

The only federal labor law I know about is I have to be out by 10 if i’m closing because I’m a minor. Being out at 9 is absolute bull. It’s been shit recently, I sobbed at the window yesterday lol
ucnkissmybarbie2 points1y ago
As someone who worked in the food industry as a teen, find another job. No teenager should be reduced to tears for a minimum wage job! Learn what not to do or put up with from this experience. Managers will make you do all kinds of things if they know you'll do it without question.
reginaldioz1 points1y ago
Agreed! I’m just trying to stick it out before college so i have some money :0
ucnkissmybarbie2 points1y ago
Keep putting out resumes on job sites and looking for better jobs. It's always best to have something lined up but if you're feeling abused for a paycheck, it's so not worth it. Sending you positive vibes to get out of there. 💜
MrsClaireUnderwood5 points1y ago
Thousands of stores in America are open past 9. What a hilariously stupid lie about labor laws.
chewbekkers3 points1y ago
Could be minors/high school kids. They can't work past 9 on school nights in some states.
Kmsss2 points1y ago
I feel so blessed to have a SM AND DM that are so understanding. Fuck that manager. They’re ruining Starbucks culture. Come work at my store ❤️
joergenssaddle2 points1y ago
i’ve been seeing a lot of these hostile store situations. i’m glad that my managers are super cool😐
