A woman asked us to steam breastmilk for her infant. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by whatisprofound
The thinnest of silver linings was that it wasn't followed by "but the other starbucks does it for me."
spacespecterr 292 points 1y ago
people are getting way too comfortable. 😭
[deleted] 40 points 1y ago
WAY! TOO! COMFORTABLE!!
Tvdrone16 208 points 1y ago
Only if they brought enough for the whole staff
Last_Employment_1730 31 points 1y ago
Sharing is caring ❤😌
whatisprofound [OP] 7 points 1y ago
That's literally what my brother said when I told him.
badatlife15 186 points 1y ago
I think the closest we could do is get a venti cup of hot water to put the bottle in, but wow that is a request that would surely cause me to pause and be super thrown off.
cringeqween13 134 points 1y ago
Ive had someone ask for hot water to warm their baby milk yknow like a sane person might do
lostpuppy1216 24 points 1y ago
yea same . plus we got a 20 dollar tip when i did that
vkapadia 59 points 1y ago
I've done that many times with my first kid. Any time we're out and it's feeding time, we'd head to a Starbucks. I'd get a venti cup half full of boiling water, and we'd soak the bottle in that.

Steaming anything a customer brought in, let alone breastmilk, is crazy.
FfierceLaw 115 points 1y ago
No human bodily fluids in our steaming pitchers
dcgirl17 13 points 1y ago
This
haydensidun 76 points 1y ago
At my old store some lady asked me to do this. She came back a few more times over the next couple months with the same request and each time I’d tell her no and be as flabbergasted as the first. Eventually she took a hint and I never saw her again.
ChloeTheLizard 7 points 1y ago
sounds fetishy lol
whatisprofound [OP] 5 points 1y ago
Was it for her or a baby? Like... you want a white mocha sub breast milk bud? Get outta here.
Phoenix-1973 67 points 1y ago
Ok even were that allowable in any way...I can't held but think the bubbles and froth wouldn't be good for baby tummy??
whatisprofound [OP] 2 points 1y ago
My brother suggested a breast milk cappuccino. But he's a weirdo and I dont think he was actually serious.
jordan_leigh 34 points 1y ago
I don’t care what it is. Outside/3rd party products aren’t allowed to come behind the counter.
macci-hot-o 34 points 1y ago
I’ve had that request before. Did not know what to say other than no
terriblescreenwriter 22 points 1y ago
Ain’t no way boy, ain’t no fucking way
shikiP 18 points 1y ago
wow ive only been asked to steam someomes goat milk lmao
Critical50 18 points 1y ago
I always like asking "Which store?"

They would stutter so much.
G13-350125 11 points 1y ago
Which store? Because they could get fired for that and I want to warn them
Ok-Responsibility735 14 points 1y ago
That machine would have to be thrown away, lol. The whole thing, at a cost of what, $10,000.00? What a psycho. We are just barely taking personal cups due to Covid. I hate people.
Minute-Weakness-7169 8 points 1y ago
That machine is worth way more than 10,000….try more like 50’000 dollars. Those are designed fully automated for Starbucks only

The average commercial espresso machine is between 20-30’000 dollars. If you purchase a La Marzocco. Their smallest coffee machine is literally 10,000 dollars and is used for small cafe or at home. The Mastrana 2 is not $18’000 dollars and that random online article you found that says that is wrong. That fully automated machine is worth nearly $50’000 dollars. The machine I work on every day is worth $20’000 and it’s not even top of the line.

What? Why? I can take the stream wand off my espresso machine easy-peasy if I want to deep clean it. Does it not work that way for y'all's?
Ok-Responsibility735 3 points 1y ago
That's against health code and store policy. Definitely fireable
ladyelenawf 2 points 1y ago
Sorry, may have been unclear. I agree with not steaming the breast milk. I was asking about cleaning the steam wand.
Very-_-Disappointing 2 points 1y ago
We can take the outer plastic cover of the steam wand off but I’m not sure if there is a way to remove the metal piece, at least without a technician coming in to do it. I don’t think they’d ever allow us to use it again without somehow cleaning the inside of the metal bit with harsh chemicals. It’s a biohazard to let body fluids get in any of our equipment, so it would be an insane liability to have that machine in use especially if people found out about it because they would rightfully sue us. I doubt they would throw out the machine though. I’m guessing it would either be cleaned, partially replaced, or traded out for a new one and the old one would end up somewhere else after a deep clean. This is entirely my guess though, not any official position obviously.
aquamanreigns93 13 points 1y ago
Hi, yes can I get caramel macchiato extra drizzle and sub the 2% for my human milk oh and upside down :)
XSnapCracklePopX 7 points 1y ago
“Ma’am, I’m not a doctor, but that’s a yeast infection.”
zydr8te 13 points 1y ago
Wouldn't that make it too hot? Or the wrong consistency? NF gets thick like paint
bigghostb00ty 29 points 1y ago
Just steam it on kids temp, duh.
XSnapCracklePopX 13 points 1y ago
How does her boob fit into the steaming pitcher? I’m sure you’d get 3rd degrees burns…if not it’s spill over the mug and get smushed by the steaming wand /s
Moorehadley 10 points 1y ago
I’m pretty sure that would kill the antibodies and good stuff in the breast milk on top of everything said in this thread.
darkwolf523 10 points 1y ago
Uh… me personally I wouldn’t know what to say to that but my store love babies/kids mainly due to the fact some of them have kids of their own but me? Nah I don’t have kids so I would say no
fannytraggot 27 points 1y ago
well we aren't allowed to have third-party behind the counter anyways so it shouldn't be a question.
darkwolf523 3 points 1y ago
True
Repulsive-Worth5715 11 points 1y ago
I have kids and am literally breastfeeding right now but that's a hard no from me. There are other ways to warm up milk
drinkliquidclocks 8 points 1y ago
Doesn't matter how much you like kids, imagine the person with the next drink who got their milk steamed with that same steam wand... Unsanitary and disgusting lol
darkwolf523 3 points 1y ago
Didn’t say I didn’t like kids. Just no. It’s weird asking someone to do that
TheDoubleDan 7 points 1y ago
As long as I can have some to make myself a latte.
nioyakult 7 points 1y ago
ewww
kris10vs 6 points 1y ago
Where is this “other Starbucks” that does it for her??? WHERE????
ladyelenawf 11 points 1y ago
I read it as the the good part of the encounter was the customer did *NOT* say that.
kris10vs 4 points 1y ago
Phew, so glad I read that wrong!!!
ladyelenawf 2 points 1y ago
No worries, I had to read it it a couple of times myself.
TyrannicalKitty 5 points 1y ago
"yeah can I get my latte with breast milk I mean breast milk sorry I mean breast milk(x50)"
ShannyES 5 points 1y ago
This is when I’m thankful for masking requirements. Because LORD my face. The utter disgust and disappointment in my fellow species would be ALL over it.
muhkiim 4 points 1y ago
As a breastfeeding parent... what the actual fk???
Ok-Responsibility735 4 points 1y ago
The steam wands come off, but we cannot steam any outside products, and most definitely not bodily fluid outside products. We could be shutdown and fired for that.
lilkiosk 3 points 1y ago
As a breastfeeding mother and a barista, no.

Edit to say: it would be way too hot for the baby, and I would assume it’s the same as why they tell you not to microwave or aggressively shake breastmilk, the heat and shaking breaks down the nutrients and makes the breastmilk less nutritionally valuable for the baby
Emucks 3 points 1y ago
NO FUCKING WAY AHAHAHAHAHAH
Few_Revenue25 3 points 1y ago
Bro what
LanternLight4 2 points 1y ago
Ewww.
urlocaltransboy 2 points 1y ago
Is breast milk considered a bodily fluid? I’m assuming so….
If it is, then wouldn’t that be a food safety hazard??
amazong6 2 points 1y ago
say sike rn pls
mulderufo13 2 points 1y ago
Yooo yo never say that to me again- is what I said out loud reading this
Necessary_Low939 1 points 1y ago

cherib0mbb 1 points 1y ago
