Barista Shoulder Pain (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by vcrrd808
Does anybody have advice/tips for shoulder pain from being on bar? My store has a high turnover rate and is always busy. We don’t have a lot of strong bar partners bc of this, so I usually end up manning bar for my whole shift. I wish that rotating positions was an option for me, but I don’t foresee that ever happening at my store.
If anybody else struggles with this and has advice, I’m all ears.

Don't man bar your whole shift. It's a policy to rotate for a reason. I cannot stress this enough. The repetitive motion injury risk is real. I have a chronic wrist injury that still flares up from this being done to me at a store 3+ years ago. It isn't worth it.

Ice before bed helps a lot

i feel this. i’m always on bar. i’ve been stuck on bar for the entirety of 8.5hr shifts. the best thing you can do is ask to be moved somewhere else the second you feel the pain coming. be an asshole about it if you have to. in the last 6 months i’ve had wrist pain so bad i can’t feel my hands (even on my days off), sciatica, and just general arm/back pain that literally will not go away and it all gets worse every day i’m on bar for more than an hour. my body is in a worse state than my 73 year old grandfather with one leg and i’m only 19. it’s policy to be rotated after a certain amount of time for these exact reasons

Heating pad, massage gun and sleeve! My best friends!

I bought a massage gun off amazon for like $45!!! it’s so worth it!!! and then if like you’re whole back is sore (like mine sometimes) it’s way easier for you to even give yourself a pretty decent massage!

This is a repetitive motion injury. Try to get workman's comp involved because, it's likely tendonitis and will need physical therapy.

I know it can be hard to impossible to part with the money, but if you can manage to go to a massage therapist every month or two, or even just once in a blue moon, it makes a huge difference. If you go to a more budget friendly place an hour massage can run $80-100 with tip. It's not cheap, but worth it if you can swing it.
