Can a partner who has taken their coffee break help me out? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ashley-leigh
So this coming February I will have been with Starbucks for 12 years and I’m highly considering taking my coffee break especially because I want to start a pharmacy tech program (which my manager is aware of) and don’t want to work while in school, again. I called Sedgwick and the person I spoke to said there is an interview of sorts. Now hearing the word “interview” itself just makes me anxious. So I was wondering if anyone who has actually taken their coffee break can tell me what they ask and how the process was for them. Thanks!

What’s a coffee break? I’ve been with the company 6 months and never heard of this!

So after you’ve been with the company for 10 consecutive years you get a “coffee break”. So essentially you get a sabbatical (unpaid) and you are guaranteed your job position when you return. I’ve gotten mixed lengths of time from 3 months and Sedgwick actually told me it could be up to a year.

It's 6 months with a return to position. It can be a year but your position isn't guaranteed. You'll still have a job, but if you were a SM they could return you as a barista if there wasn't an open position.

This is accurate. You are also supposed to give 6 months notice (as a standard) to get the break approved.
There might be flexibility on that depending on your manager and if they are staffed to the point that they could lose you sooner.

I mentioned it to my manager in the beginning of the year so she’s aware, but I’m hoping the recent partners who have been fired/quit won’t affect her decision 😥 thank you so much for the response.

Also, any leaves you've taken in the past 3 years are subtracted out. So say you took a one month loa 2 years ago, that would come out of your coffee break. That would leave you with 5 months of position guaranteed leave and 11 months (any) job guaranteed leave.

Oh I had no idea about that! I took the LOA that was offered during the beginning of Covid, I wonder if that would count towards it as well 🤔 thank you so much for this information.

A leave of absence for 3 months.

You essentially need to give your manager/DM 6 months heads up. But depending on the stores and your manager you can do it the same month. You just need to fill out some paperwork that requires your signature, dm signature and the regions HR manager signature. Don’t say anything about working somewhere else’s

Thank you so much! So I won’t mention wanting to work anywhere else but should I mention wanting to go to school or just say I want to take some time off just because?

Yeah schools fine or just need time to think about what direction you want to go in with your life/career. Just head up you will have to pay for your insurance yourself but you still keep Spotify
