weight gain / possible tw ! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by nodilla
anyone else since working at starbucks gain a few? only been a barista for maybe five months and my thighs have grown tremendously. nothing wrong with weight gain but i blame myself for all of the free coffee and food. having free drink options is super addicting 😓 especially caffeine
Johnas47 136 points 1y ago
Them double smokes and bacon egg bites really be putting the hurt on my body 😂😂
TheeeStarGirl 9 points 1y ago
ive never heard a truer statement 😂
Kari86MRH 5 points 1y ago
FOR REAL THOUGH!! I've lost most of the weight, but I'll have the scars from that damn bacon grease forever 🥴 splashed that lava all over my brand new tattoo!!! Luckily they're small, but *STILL*

When I started working at Starbucks I definitely gained weight. A lot of the, oh no this cookie is broken we can’t sell it so I better eat it. Haha. But it happens. In my case I’m pretty sick of our food and drinks by now, 9 years on and off with the company, so I mostly just have water and like one coffee during my shift and like once a week I’ll actually use my food mark out.
TheOnesLeftBehind 19 points 1y ago
You can use all seven of your food Mark outs to get a cranberry bliss tray since there’s seven in there. Just ring one at a time
interyx 13 points 1y ago
Back when I first started there was a bug in the system and it allowed us to mark out an entire box using a single food markout.

They fixed that quick but it was glorious while it lasted.
TheOnesLeftBehind 3 points 1y ago
Sounds like it was
Beardzesty -13 points 1y ago
I believe there's only 6 so you get 1 markout for something that isn't going to make you fat
TheOnesLeftBehind 5 points 1y ago
Op, yeah there is only six, but I don’t think 290 calories will make you fat. There’s many much worse things we have. Most of the drinks are more than that so hush. 🤫😉
Beardzesty 0 points 1y ago
290 per bar tho right?

I somehow lost 4lbs, I do get super sweet drinks but for food I usually try to lean toward the protein boxes or the chicken quinoa bowl or even the RF turkey bacon
National-Chance2406 8 points 1y ago
i lost around 8 pounds 😭i’m trynna gain it back
TheOnesLeftBehind 3 points 1y ago
I’ve lost 10 and haven’t been able to get it back for two years. I’m 98lbs 🥲. I weighed more at the end of middle school. I can’t even cheat and use heavy cream for drinks since I’m lactose intolerant.
xoMisaa 1 points 1y ago
i’m coming from 98lbs as of last year and the one thing that’s helping me gain weight now are the paninis they’re like the only things that actually help it i have a VERY high metabolism (not the reason i was 98lbs tho sadly) so gaining weight is difficult the paninis aren’t slowing it down, my body is actually taking in all the nutrients from them idk how it works but trust me it does 🥲
[deleted] 1 points 1y ago
[removed]
TheOnesLeftBehind 1 points 1y ago
See I get the paninis fairly often. I found today the chicken double smoked is good with a little bit of honey actually. Still does nothing for my weight. I also get the pbj box or sometimes salad to spice things up. I can’t do the panini with cheese though cause soft cheese is the worst for lactose intolerance. My weight loss is just from a high metabolism, but my eating disorder is happy about it.

yes omg. pants that i bought a year ago are starting to get reallll snug. i worked at mcdonald’s for 2.5 years and gained hardly anything, but easily 10 lbs in the 1 year i’ve been at starbucks. it’s the drinks that are the killer for me, bc i usually eat the protein boxes
residenttinman 20 points 1y ago
Yes. Also my acne came back. About to go cold turkey off the sugar and caffeine except for the brewed teas
Savmac1020 7 points 1y ago
Try passion tea with some Splendas. You’ll thank me later
iqueefkief 15 points 1y ago
stevias are pretty good too! passion tea is also extremely good for stabilizing blood insulin levels and naturally lowers blood pressure. and it’s packed with antioxidants. easily the passion tea is the best thing to get from sbux.
KillerBEAT 3 points 1y ago
And it's caffeine free, my go-to for when I close.
C0ffeeCoffeeC0ffee 18 points 1y ago
Yup yup yup I was put on medications with weight gain as a side effect AND started working at Starbucks over the course of a few months and I have had to buy new pants multiple times (thanks old navy for your $15 jeans sales 😂😭). I'm trying to eat better when I'm home and drink unsweetened iced tea more often at work rather than sugary drinks and I've at least stopped gaining weight, but I sure haven't lost any :/
chuckywucky 3 points 1y ago
As someone that had the same issue when starting (medication and free sugary drinks is a killer), don't feel to bad. I'm proud of you for making small changes. It sounds like they are working if you have stopped gaining weight. :) Remember to focus on your health rather than the number. Less sugar, less processed foods, and more exercise did it for me. I am down only 10 lbs, but feel better than I did when I was at a lower weight.
C0ffeeCoffeeC0ffee 2 points 1y ago
*high five* thanks :)

Yes I try to avoid gaining weight to begin with and I suffer with eating disorders so I have limited myself to only one or two refreshers a shift usually a grande size and drink venti water or Trenta water. My coworkers make fun of me when they ask what should I drink allowed and I say water ! Because I’m the only partner that drinks water every single day/shift I tell myself not to overdo it on the food either. Having a mindset like me has put me in a difficult position, I hate that I feel like this and I almost completely avoid any lattes or any coffee drinks too.
BothWeb1004 3 points 1y ago
I remind all of my baristas to hydrate because our store is always warm, so there's personal cups full off water everywhere. Water is healthy, never feel bad about hydrating.
designated-grapes 13 points 1y ago
I learned to deal with unsweetened or half sweetened drinks and eat oatmeal every morning with half a packet of brown sugar.

Otherwise, I'd gain too much and I can't afford new clothes lol
tenthwalker 7 points 1y ago
Try the oatmeal with a scoop or two of frap chips instead! Doesn't add too much sugar, but the chocolate flavor will help trick your brain and still tastes good without being overly sweet. I usually add them before I add hot water or steamed oatmilk to help them melt
designated-grapes 8 points 1y ago
Thanks for the suggestion but I don't like chocolate. I add a bunch of cinnamon to add a bit more flavor and add bananas instead of blueberries since I need more potassium in my diet.
iqueefkief 2 points 1y ago
stealin yo recipe
designated-grapes 1 points 1y ago
Enjoy! 🙂
canidieyet_ 1 points 1y ago
i love the oat meal with steamed oat milk (or almond if we’re out) with one pump mocha, cinnamon powder and like maybe a 1/4 of the brown sugar packet. it’s so good
official_koda_ 10 points 1y ago
I gotta stop drinking venti iced chais with pumpkin foam like water
csaine 10 points 1y ago
I've actually lost weight, but I mostly drink water and eat the salad. I also have severe acid reflux and migraines that restrict my diet.
iqueefkief 3 points 1y ago
same, the shit sucks but at least following the diet means you get to be healthier everywhere else.
csaine 2 points 1y ago
Ikr, I know every time I stray from my diet, I pay for it with a flare up. So if I want coffee, I pay for it. If I want red sauce, or spicy food, I pay for it. But I don't miss the coffee, soda, alcohol, or other stuff all that much. Occasionally I have something I shouldn't knowing the consequences. Overall I'm healthier for it.
iqueefkief 1 points 1y ago
it’s a fantastic way to build up willpower and resilience. our lifespans will be happy for it.
KRottenHoliday 9 points 1y ago
I actually lost weight working at Starbucks. Granted I've move from Frappuccinos with 4 different syrups to a cold brew with almond milk, so that might help, but once you get sick of eating the food there the caffeine makes you not eat as much
baristasgtpepper 8 points 1y ago
I think part of the weight gain is also from high stress levels. I don’t eat or drink for work too often but I still put in around 25 pounds in the year that I’ve been working
Several-Government82 7 points 1y ago
I would be fine except by the end of my shift I feel so frustrated and get the “I just need a cake pop as a reward” mentality 🤦‍♀️
ChemicalBarnacle 3 points 1y ago
I’ve actually lost weight from caffine and stress ooof
the_coffeegirl 3 points 1y ago
So, just a thought. Are you working the bar? If so, there's a lot of squatting involved that could be building your thighs/glutes under the weight gain from the delicious food/drinks.
xoMisaa 2 points 1y ago
don’t forget arm muscles from bar too! my arms look a lot more jacked than they did before i started all bc of the pumps for mocha, wm, frap roast etc… from being on bar everyday for about 5-8 hours a day 😅

edit: also carrying many jugs of milk at once made that happen too🥲
shewhoisatstarbucks 3 points 1y ago
I like making smoothies at work! You can mark out a juice as your food and blend it in the blender with a banana. I mark out the banana by adding it to a cup of water. Pay attention to what you're eating and drinking. ♥
canidieyet_ 1 points 1y ago
which juice is your favorite?
shewhoisatstarbucks 1 points 1y ago
vital berry! Just for fun I've made a smoothie with defense up/banana/dragonfruit inclusions. It makes a bright purple smoothie!
canidieyet_ 1 points 1y ago
definitely trying this!!
shewhoisatstarbucks 1 points 1y ago
You're also not supposed to but I like blending the peanut butter bars too. I just make sure to wash the blender after so no peanut problems. The bars are pretty hard when refrigerated. I massage them and break them up into smaller pieces. Then add banana and milk...
interyx 1 points 1y ago
I remember when we had smoothies on the menu. They were pretty good!

Now it's all sugar and cold foam.
shewhoisatstarbucks 1 points 1y ago
When I first started in 2014 we had chocolate, strawberry, orange mango. Made with 2%, banana & protein powder. I didn't mind the evolution smoothies with baby kale. Funny we were blending greek yogurt/nutmeg in them. I think those were very healthy.
darthvulsa 3 points 1y ago
When I started working at Starbucks 8 years ago, I lost like 10 lbs. I ate some of the food, but I always drink water and take my coffee black. I was also always put on CS at first because I couldn’t keep up with bar and my voice wasn’t practiced enough to project in order for customers to hear me.
jazzysoranio 2 points 1y ago
I actually lost weight at Starbucks because it made me tired of everything. Lol. I literally hate milk now since working at Starbucks. And I’ve made so many sugary drinks that I don’t even like sugar anymore. It wasn’t like that at first, but after a couple years I just noticed that everything looked gross to me now.
Impossible-Host-924 2 points 1y ago
really I would say I lost so much due to the constant movement.
briannuzzi 2 points 1y ago
I’ve gained a bit in the 7 months I’ve been here but I can’t tell if it’s actually from Starbucks or because I’m just stressed overall with work and school haha. that being said, anyone recommend some healthy caffeinated drinks I could get that still taste sweet? i do drink a lot of water throughout my shifts but I also need caffeine just as much and it would help a lot if I found ways to make them more healthy while still tasting good. I also do love getting unsweetened iced teas with stevia or something
iStealSharpies 2 points 1y ago
I noticed this when I first started! Around may I switched to black cold brew and changed my eating habits/ gym habits. I’ve lost 30 pounds since then. Having the mark out really takes a toll sometimes.
Hot-Froyo 2 points 1y ago
Gained twenty pounds since I started. I blame unlimited pumpkin cold brews.
MK2730 2 points 1y ago
This def happened to me while I worked at Starbucks. I thought I would lose weight cuz it was so fast paced, but I guess ya can’t outrun a fork and with the free shit it was all I ate for a bit there

55 lbs is 24.97 kg
clahey03 1 points 1y ago
Oh yes, my first time around with the siren I gained 30 pounds. This time I refuse to eat anything here and only drink black coffee or unsweetened tea.
madamemonday 1 points 1y ago
Yes, 30lbs. I stayed at a steady weight for years and this job made me pack on the pounds. I can't get it off either.
It_is_Katy 1 points 1y ago
I've been working at the 'Bucks just under two months. I actually lost 49 pounds since this past June (out of a planned 120 pounds or so), and man has working at Starbucks made it harder. I didn't lose any weight the first few weeks, but as I've been better at watching what I'm eating throughout the day (and going a bit harder on my days off), the pounds are coming off again. I just have to be careful and mindful of my calories.
gummytoli 1 points 1y ago
Within my first month at a starbies, I lost 30 lbs. i dont know why.
Gameb0i6 1 points 1y ago
I haven’t gained any weight. I know the food here is bad for you so it purposely don’t eat anything. Think my thing I will get abs plain green iced tea with no water. That’s all.
dreamgothgf 1 points 1y ago
i gained like 20 lbs working there :(
converter-bot 1 points 1y ago
20 lbs is 9.08 kg
wunderkyn 1 points 1y ago
I once worked at Godiva Chocolatiers, and I haven’t gained as much weight working there as I have working at Starbucks…it’s insane😰

I gained 10 lbs my first few months at sbux just cuz of how much food and drinks I was consuming 😅 managed to lose it a year later tho 😸
converter-bot 1 points 1y ago
10 lbs is 4.54 kg
martinifather 1 points 1y ago
thanks
digitalsushi0 1 points 1y ago
I try my best to stick to drinking straight espresso and brewed with SFV. And a cup of water for every drink. Food wise I do go crazy I haven't really looked into nutrition that way. I try for the highest protein though
Strong_Challenge1363 1 points 1y ago
I noticably lost weight when we were off for the remodel and I was slightly mortified because it was only 3 weeks but... Yes
Consistent_Match_259 1 points 1y ago
I LITERALLY PUT ON 10 POUNDS IN MY FIRST 2 MONTHS OF WORKING HERE. I COULDNT GAIN WEIGHT FOR YEARS

rpeters91 1 points 1y ago
I have gained at least 25lbs in 4 years and am now struggling to lose weight lol.
rlkram 1 points 1y ago
I drink unsweetened tea like water and eat the salad or egg bites, I've lost weight but gained a pant size from all the exercise - my legs are built now. If i deviate from that at all though i start gaining rapidly at least for me i can't just say "i can have one sugary drink a shift..."
cecicoot 1 points 1y ago
I’ve lost a few inches on my waist but I only noticed today because I put on a pair of jeans that were almost too tight when I started back in August and now they fit…except for around my calves but I’m not mad about that.
ShannyES 1 points 1y ago
Yes indeed. Especially with the free food and bev every day Covid benefit. Now that it’s stopped I’m back to making food and drinks at home and I’ve lost almost 10lbs. (I’m a pretty fluffy barista. So it’s not even super noticeable). But yeah, the clothes were getting a smidge uncomfy.
iqueefkief 1 points 1y ago
yep, gotta have a lot of discipline. learn how to enjoy unsweet or less sweet beverages and don’t go near the pastries. i usually stick with any of the egg bites for my mark outs too or i get the chicken caprese and don’t eat the bread.

sucks they don’t really offer anything healthy. even the protein boxes are packed with sodium and i unfortunately don’t care for any of them either.

good thing to keep in mind, a single pump of syrup from a full pump is 20 calories. adds up quick!!!

also, almond and coconut milks are gonna be the lowest cal milks to add to espresso calorie wise other than water.

i’m a personal fitness trainer too 🤷‍♀️
xoMisaa 1 points 1y ago
what about oatmilk? almond milk has a weird texture imo so i get nauseous when i drink it and coconut milk is tooooo thick for me to enjoy so oatmilk is my perfect medium is it as healthy or are coconut and almond the only two that actually help? :(
iqueefkief 1 points 1y ago
120 cals in oatmilk vs 60 in our almond for the same amount, but oatmilk is nutritious. that + less sugar isn’t bad
sofso 1 points 1y ago
i gained weight! all those liquid calories and all the easily available pastries when the ovens are all backed up and sandwiches/egg bites aren't possible.
acnh1222 1 points 1y ago
I’m curious if I’ve gained weight or not, I haven’t weighed myself. I eat breakfast at Starbucks before my shift every day and have 1-2 coffees every day (usually a latte with some kind of syrup). Between work and school and the weather getting colder I went from going to the gym/going on long outdoor walks daily to it being a rare occurrence
Canned-strawberries 1 points 1y ago
I worked there for 3 or 4 months and gained like 20 pounds 👀 (tbh I was also depressed tho so I wasn’t really exercising much)
raptoraptorr 1 points 1y ago
Only triple filtered water and the chicken hummus box for me
