back again with the awful manager: transphobia editionq (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by diotheleo
there's two of us in my store that are trans right? me and one other. we discuss being trans sometimes bc its literally part of our lives every minute kf every day. sepcifically, in the back of the store, we were discussing the medical benefits offered to trans people who are transitioning. we used medical terms (hrt, horomones, t, testosterone, top surgery) while discussing what starbucks covered/helped cover. apparently a cis coworker overhead, got uncomfortable, and reported it to the store manager. we strongly suspect a coworker who has proven to be racist, xenophobic, transohobic, and more to be the one behind it. store manager is now telling us we're not allowed to discuss THE BENEFITS WE'RE OFFERED BY THE COMPANY because it's innapropriate.

so i hope she enjoys the lawsuit for discrimination i'll threaten and serve her with :) because its specifically ONLY us two trans worker who are being told we cant discuss the medical benefits we're offered which just reeks of discrimination and transphobia.

I don’t get how talking about medical benefits could make people feel uncomfortable, whoever complained is a jerk, and your manager is a jerk. Hopefully the suit changes their attitudes.

Hmm my take is I guess this could be taken the same way as a appendectomy someone talking about the gory details of there appendix (an unwanted appendage) being removed is it inappropriate traditionally no. But would it make someone uncomfortable and sick possibly. From that perspective I could see how a coworker might feel uncomfortable. My advice is just be aware of who ur talking in front of to prevent drama

thing is, we were discussing in general terms, no details, just what things were covered by sbux. id get it is we went into details about gender affirming surgeries or hormome injections but we literally just discussed what things are covered, as one would discuss like. medical or dental coverage, or other benefits theyre given by a job.

It's the same for people at my store. I wonder why.
