Former Barista- Should I return? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Christohh2012
I was a 4 year former partner who left in June 2020. I am a long term store manager of Hot Topic and left after my HT store reopened during the COVID shut down so I could focus on my team and the stress of the pandemic. I loved working at The Siren other than the petty drama with partners and tended to keep to myself and just enjoy the work. This last October I randomly applied as SM at Starbucks as I was feeling in a rut and depressed... Much to my surprised I was offered the role. The pay is great, much more than I make at HT as a store manager, the benefits are much better. However I am happy with HT and have potential to move up since I have such long tenure with the company. I am close with my team as I hired and developed all of them. My heart doesn't want to leave HT, but the offer is amazing at Starbucks and I did love working there before. Now I have to make the decision... Starbucks or Hot Topic. I've heard times are tough at Starbucks but as a store manager could I support my team to make our environment better? Any other SMs here that could give me insight? Thanks in advance as my heart and finances are truly split. ❤

Realistically, you won’t have much power as a store manager. You’re there to essentially do admin work, schedules, help your team on the floor a bit, and above all else, be a slave to your district manager.

Anything you really want to do to help your team succeed will magically go against some arbitrary rule set by corporate. Too few partners scheduled on top of two call outs? Well golly gee gosh you’re still above your allotted labor hours you absolute failure!

If you’re lucky with having a good DM and RD you might have more opportunity to make changes or bend the rules a bit, but go in expecting nothing and feeling like a failure all the time because you literally can’t make it easier for your team without getting in trouble. Also take my comment with a grain of salt bc I’m only a barista and can only speak for what my SM has personally told me about their situation. They’re a great SM and we have a great DM too, but even with them, we’re horribly under-scheduled due to Starbucks‘ labor metric even though we have the baristas and the availability.
