starbucks is severely hurting for employees right now. they'll probably offer you a job on the spot after your interview! especially bc you have previous relevant experience

Yeah the locations in my area need people so tbh I’m not extremely worried about GETTING the job (since I think the negative of my lack of knowledge on coffee can be weighed out with my experience in food service already) I’m just really scared that I will be a failure at the job! Like it seems so hard, did it take you tons of shifts to memorize all those drinks and components?

tbh i've been here 11 months and i'm still learning new things every day. that being said, they'll definitely start you off somewhere other than bar and you'll get bar training and be slowly eased into drink making (unless the store's a total shitshow..). i carried around a cheatsheet of shots and syrup pumps for each size of drink, and with that i was able to get most things down within 2 months? but i wasn't put on bar during peak until about 4 months in.

Let me tell you, training will not teach you, it will show you the basics. Only real way to learn is by being put on bar and just remembering the sequences and ingredients. You can take notes as well and study at home, but the best way to learn is to actually do it. Took me about a month and a half to two months to become comfortable on bar, but I know for a lot of people it is around a month. If you have good shifts, they won’t throw you on bar to practice when it’s busy, so don’t be worried about that. You’ll most likely be thrown on cold bar for a little bit and then progressively move onto to hot bar
Edit: Also, there’s a lot more to it than just bar. I was stuck doing warming/front for a while, but there’s also restock, customer support, cleaning. It really ain’t too bad though

I agree with all this but i will say please don’t study at home. We aren’t paid enough to try to improve our performance unpaid. If you’re doing work, including training, get paid. we’re hourly employees, you’re going to work your scheduled shift regardless if you are fast or slow

THIS! When I was handed a cheat sheet to study at home, I gave the guy who gave it to me the craziest look. Keep work at work. You’ll get burnt out

Literally had this convo with a co-worker. I was doing dishes and I was like “what’s the point if I even rush these and make them spotless, not like I get paid any more or less to work my ass off everyday.” Ah, what a wonderful way to look at things. I think I hate my life

Today I cried in the back so violently that I had a headache. Don’t work at starbucks. Customers are mean and management will take their side over you always.

i knew absolutely nothing about coffee before i started working at starbucks. as long as ur willing to put in the work it takes to memorize the drink recipes, u will be fine! its going to be overwhelming but once u get over that feeling it gets better. one thing that helped me was to literally make flashcards of all the drink recipes. sounds kinda dumb but i was able to have all the drinks memorized within a few days

Yes!!
I started working at Starbucks in 2018, and left this June. Before Starbucks, I never drank coffee willingly, even with a pound of sugar and half of it being milk. Im still not a fan.
I think a more important question to ask yourself is: are you willing to try new things, especially black coffee, for your job? As much as I hate it, I would take sips. Why? When being a barista, your job is not only to know how to make drinks, but how to help a customer find what they like. They like bitter drinks? Try a dark roast! Want something sweeter and lighter? Get a blonde! Want a chocolatey flavor and don't care about the rest? Try Verona! Having your own experience of it helps you connect to people and better understand how to help them.
The menu IS expansive and can be intimidating, but you're not expected to understand, remember, and know how to do every drink from the start. The best way to describe it, in my opinion, is you have three basic drink: hot drinks, iced drinks, blended drinks. They have their own rules that they adhere to, with some drinks that are exceptions, which you WILL run into, and end up remembering. If you don't? There's recipe cards and more experienced baristas to help you.
Starbucks will take care of you and chances areit will be a good job. The store itself, store manager, and store location will impact your experience greatly. Warning: Starbucks corporate will rarely stand up for their employees, they would rather lick to dirty toes and assholes of any customer before sticking up for a barista. Other than that (and the menu getting even more expensive and complex over three years), I loved the job.

Too much work for the pay of doing multiple positions with understatement rn. Find an office job that pays just the same and you’ll save your mental state.

The most important advice to ever take is to pick the store you work at based on management they will make or break your experience. If you have a manager who is good on communication and makes sure that everyone is rotated well then you'll be fine I can usually tell by reviews of the location along with how they are before during and after the interview. Most importantly trust your gut. If you think a store is going to be bad don't apply there. I got my store by accident and have been loving it. Customers are rude and mean but that mostly depends on the area you are working in. The richer the area the more severe the attitude.

Every drink is basically the same. Getting the job will probably be no sweat at all.
We got:
* fine benefits * no union * low/not enough to live off of hours (unless you're a supervisor or manager) * bad pay (basically anywhere, even I make $15.5+tips but thats shit for Chicago) * lots of work

I didn’t know shit about coffee when I got hired. You sound like you’d be a good fit, the job is more or less what you make it. I work in a shit store right now but I’m a fucking dinosaur at this point (220 partner) and it’s just par for the course. Sometimes it’s great, sometimes it’s shit. My 401k is stacked and I have tons of money in stocks so there are worse places to work. I also have health insurance through the bux.
You’ll make great friends. I met my boyfriend and my best friends in the whole world through Starbucks.

i just got hired recently! my partners are SUPER nice and super understanding; my shift supervisors are even better. it depends if you rlly like fast paced work environments, if fast paced is not ur cup of tea (or coffee) i dont recommend it. i usually dont but working at starbies hives me an adrenaline rush so i like it😂 the most imporatant part is that if ur working bar and you have a rude customer, decaf the SHIT out of them 🥰
