Customers stealing from the tip jar (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by batphomet_
Does this happen at anyone else’s store? People will straight up take money out of our tip jar when they don’t have enough money or to make change. It’s so bizarre.
CheyenneJudith 299 points 1y ago
Someone took our entire tip jar and ran off with it. So we have cut a circle in the bottom, that way when you pick it up all the money falls out of it

You beat me to it
KobeJay22 20 points 1y ago
We’ve had 4 different people run out with it previously had to screw ours into the the counter and it’s also has a lock on it so ransoms can’t open it to steal money.

So the problem with that is when you want to hide the tip jar because of certain people that come in who like to try and take money from the jar, you won't be able to hide/move it quick enough because the money will just fall through.
CheyenneJudith 8 points 1y ago
Yea but we never move or hide it. It just sits there.
jen_wexxx 4 points 1y ago
Can slide a piece of paper under it first
sbell-txt 8 points 1y ago
Our tip jar was stolen twice at my old store. It’s so ridiculous

bigjilmmmm 69 points 1y ago
yeah people have tried that a couple times at our store. usually i’ll take the bills out and put them in the tip bag pretty often so there’s never more than a couple bucks in there at once
gabicav 48 points 1y ago
this woman i work with literally slapped someone’s hand when they tried to take the money from our tip jar. i can’t believe the nerve of some people
throatsofgoats 23 points 1y ago
That woman is a hero!
MaintenanceEasy744 39 points 1y ago
Apparently at my store people stealing money from our tip jar isn’t so uncommon. To the point where when it starts to have a bit of money in it we are supposed to take it in (usually the drive thru tip jar). Basically the story I gathered is that there were multiple people who would run through our drive thru to take our tips.
TapPrevious8911 12 points 1y ago
This used to happen all the time at my store so we are always checking on the jar. Most of the time we just keep it in the window so people can see it but can't reach it and we just take the tips by hand, at least I do that
mylegalusername 2 points 1y ago
Keep an empty tip jar outside and one inside the window to fill.
accountedthrowaway5 29 points 1y ago
had it done to me a few times… quite weird tbh
jondgul 27 points 1y ago
I had two people steal both of our tip jars. I said "nuh uh". Got a description of the girl and the get away car. They got pulled over shortly after and I got picked up by one of the cops to go to the scene and identify them. The cop (a regular) said to me "let's go bust some bad guys" then sang the Cops theme song while we drove there

When I worked at a retail Starbucks it happened pretty frequently. And our tip jar was literally bolted into the counter and people would just rip the whole thing off the counter somehow.

It usually happened when we weren't there, because the Starbucks closed about an hour before the store did. We'd still have tips in the jar after we closed because the store managers never helped us with anything (and they were the ones with the keys to the tip jar so we couldn't do it ourselves).

Then two days after I quit, I was still in the group chat and they said a homeless guy came in and stole tips with like 7 people in line behind him.
Balisong_Witch 19 points 1y ago
At my store, we had to get a locked box for our tips on drive because tip stealing was so common in our area
dallizzlee 17 points 1y ago
I always empty the front tip jar into the drive tip jar (which sits inside the window) for this reason. I leave a couple bucks in usually. But especially on the rare occasion we get a large tip, that comes right back out.
QuietCity333 16 points 1y ago
told a woman her total was $5.69. she gave me a $5 bill and took the rest from the tip jar (despite having more money in her wallet that i could see). i threw what she took back into the tip jar, moved it behind the counter and said “ok yea so that’s gonna be ¢0.69 :)” and she had the NERVE to complain to my shift lead.
RyusuiJL 3 points 1y ago
Would love to hear the conclusion to this.
QuietCity333 3 points 1y ago
my shift came over and luckily it was a really chill one so he just told her she can’t take change from the tip jar and made her pay the 69¢
Seaweedgreedy 10 points 1y ago
Someone came in a took all the cash out of our tip jar once and then he hid in the bathroom. We called the police and the guy left with his friend before they got there. We literally found this mans phone and pack of cigarettes in the bathroom LOL. They eventually found him like walking the streets or something and he gave them $5 back… there was at least $15 in there but ok.
Malevolent_barnacle 9 points 1y ago
There is definitely a nice way to tell them it's not a take-a-penny. Like all theft deterrents, ya gotta be annoying helpful 🙃
Tearsofthe_Lynx 8 points 1y ago
This happened to me a while ago and I was peeved. Don't kno how I would act if this happened now.
pompous-pomeranian 7 points 1y ago
To prevent people from taking money from the tip jar (especially to make change), my boss told us to tell people that only we’re allowed to put our hands in the tip jar and emphasize to the customers that it’s a matter of corporate policy and not a point of trust to avoid offending them. This has entirely stopped people from removing money from the tip jar when I’m on the register and avoids uncomfortable confrontations.
idkksue 6 points 1y ago
Once a woman was a whole 94 cents short on her order and she started digging through our tip jar for change… which was labeled “tips”… and had dollar bills in it.

When I said “That’s our tip jar, you can’t take money from it.” she was genuinely confused.
sheep_heavenly 6 points 1y ago
Both homeless people and straight up paying customers.

My favorite was someone who snatched a handful out saying that my attitude was so bad they were reverse tipping. The woman they were with literally shouted at them while snatching the money back and shoving it at me. It was jarring but kinda surreal and awesome.
Select_Swordfish_603 6 points 1y ago
I've never had anyone steal from the tip jar, probably because ours is a lockbox that gets locked down, but I have had people steal other people's receipts. Sometimes the receipts pile up next to reg and they just walk by and... Take them. Lol
Fantastic1357 1 points 1y ago
What do they get out of that?
Sourpunchgirl 2 points 1y ago
Maybe to claim they never got a drink? If not then I have no idea
GirlGangX3 5 points 1y ago
You don’t ask them not to? Just like hey that’s actually our tip jar it’s not to supplement people who are short.
ItzBoogieMan 5 points 1y ago
Sketchy starbucks locations have this. Idek what to think about it, I had some weekly regular come in who orders a water and dumps it in the trash after he tried stealing the jar 6 months back
itsssmila 4 points 1y ago
I worked at Starbucks and people would bluntly ask me if they could and i’d simply give them the death stare and say “NO”. Tf you think this is! Like we as baristas barely getting paid good and we work for those tips so no lol.
shikiP 4 points 1y ago
yes, someone was too impatient for me to get them change (they didnt buy anything btw) and ran out after taking some money from the tip jar
CalifasBarista 3 points 1y ago
I legit had a guy steal our tip jar during our closing shift. I think it was one of my last before I left the Bux. Two partner play so I had been in the back washing dishes and it was a whole ass mess, a security guard that was the equivalent of Paul Blart and useless cops.
paigemclachlan 3 points 1y ago
Someone today treated it as a “take a penny leave a penny” thing. But it was him leaving a dollar and taking .50 cents and he did it before I could react
leftyplantmom 3 points 1y ago
Last month our entire tip jar (jar included) got taken THREE times!!!
jennalahuee 3 points 1y ago
2 years ago someone stole both of our tip jars on new years eve :(
acexcake 3 points 1y ago
Everytime we have our tip jar outside during a rush or whatever in drive through we have to immediately pull it back in after the cars leave. We have a homeless man who will stand and wait till the cars leave to try and take it. We’ve offered him food and water but he declines, he just wants to steal the money. He even came in the store one day and tried to steal my managers laptop. We’re not nasty to him, we try our best to be civil, he’s still a person and deserves respect, but you can’t steal our tips. we work hard for them.
fawnaluna 3 points 1y ago
not so much? we keep it out of their reach and they hand us tips when they want to tip. we have a glass protection thing in front of our register, so we keep it behind that so it would be uncomfortable for them to try to get into it and on our drive thru it sits inside the window but still in view
Intelligent_Table_76 3 points 1y ago
got our tip jar stolen three times 👍
EntertainmentWeak240 3 points 1y ago
Our tip jar was taken from the drive one night like the jar and even the rock that was in it :(
ToffeeBuxSlut 2 points 1y ago
Had this happen to me, first Christmas at sbux, front POS. Had a huge line during peak, when I turned away from the counter to assist my current customer, A guy snuck by the customers and stole our tips (which was at least thirty bucks). I didn’t notice until a customer down the line told me as the guy was already almost gone, but this same customer quickly grabbed a bunch of cash from her pocket and replaced most of it… I was so shocked by her generosity! Working here has had a lot of crazy and funny moments. Happy Holidays guys!
mylegalusername 2 points 1y ago
My store drops tills 2-3 times a day to keep the jars low. Generally, we have an open one in the safe ready to stuff like a turkey.

Also, if you have a DT, keep an empty jar outside and one inside to put the bills into. Minus theft, the wind steals tips too.
Lil_Polski 2 points 1y ago
Happened yesterday ☹ fuck those people
redcheekboy 2 points 1y ago
Not at Starbucks, but had someone steal all the tip jar at a restaurant I worked at. Chased him out into the street and caught up to him. He had stuffed all the tips into his disgusting boxers and started pulling out toxic ones and throwing them at us
mama_bibi 2 points 1y ago
We had a Christmas gnome on our drive through ledge outside and someone stole it today 😂 like....the tip jar was there too but the gnome is what they took. People are legit insane. I wish i saw the girl but I did not. I would literally ban her over it.
Necessary_Low939 1 points 1y ago
These are homeless people. They come, grabbed it and zoomed out. Now every time we get a bill, we put it in the bag lol
bbrrees 1 points 1y ago
Lol I used to work at chipotle and this would happen too!
piratedashel 1 points 1y ago
I always say “oh did you want me to pay for your drink?” And then I smile and wink and they usually get embarrassed. I will short the drawer before I short the tip jar, though.
SnugBear 1 points 1y ago
Never had anyone do this but I've watched a lot of people make change from our jar for smaller bills 🤷🏻‍♀️
Aliciarox11189 1 points 1y ago
We have had the tip jar numerous times and had baristas allow the customers to use the tips as change 🤦‍♀️
PurpB84 1 points 1y ago
😡😡😡😡
Forever__emo 1 points 1y ago
This has been happening way more frequently at my store since the holidays started. We routinely take the bills out too.
Honey_girl_ 1 points 1y ago
If we keep any bills over $1 in our tip jar they tend to go missing. $5 bills & up immediately go into a tip bag, everything else gets moved every couple of hours.
PluralPaul 1 points 1y ago
We used to have our tip jar sit on the drive-thru ledge until someone decided to dump everything, hella coins and all, in their car and drive away
