When you forget decent humans exist (self.starbucksbaristas)

This morning on DTO I was a bit shocked by the kind customers I got today...

1. One woman pulled up and immediately asked what the total of the woman's order behind her was. When I told her it was a $15 order I thought for sure she would decide not to pay it forward. Typically I only see people pay it forward when the next order is like five bucks. But this lady agreed to pay it, she told me the woman behind her was crying and she wanted to make her day a little better. When I leaned out the window to scan her card, I glanced at the car behind her and sure enough this poor woman was straight up sobbing in her car. When she pulled up to the window, she had stopped crying but she still looked very upset. She immediately grabbed her phone to pay and I told her she didn't need to worry about that today because the person ahead of her had covered her order, she smiled for a moment and then started crying again. She was obviously having a terrible day but it was nice to see a complete stranger improve her day just a little bit.

2. Another lady left us a $12 tip on an $8 order.

3. An elderly woman in a Cadillac DeVille asked me to do her a favor after she paid. She said she had cut in front of the person behind her because she had been blocking another car in the parking lot and felt bad about it. She handed me a $5 to go to the next person's order.

And then the asshole who threw a hot cup of tea at my SM brought me back to reality. 😒

Yesterday made me smile a lot. We had this older couple in drive and they ordered two grande hot lattes. No additional modifications. It wasn’t terribly busy either so it was just me at window and dto. They pull up and were so sweet. Then she says “this is for everyone here at the store” and she hands me $50 bill for tip. My eyes grew big and I was like o my god like thank you! And she said, no thank you guys for pushing through this last year. Your store has helped us both in socializing and just being there when it was bleak for us. We need to thank you. I almost cried because just the idea that she and her husband were thankful for us at keeping going. We had a lovely and decent mini conversation and I told all the partners on my shift. And then later on someone paid it forward and when the customer pulled up and I mentioned their order was paid for, you could see just how touched they were. I guess they were going through some personal stuff and just that one act of kindness helped make them smile.

And then of course the next order with their 6 frappes that gave me attitude about waiting made me go “yep there’s the balance for humanity” lol.
