Best way to quit (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by JustChillinn99
I’m a green bean, literally only worked 4 days, but this job just isn’t going to work. I’m in school, customers are assholes (I literally bite my tongue so I don’t cuss em out), and it’s not worth it for my mental health to deteriorate for this job.

Soooo for those who have quit, without a 2 week notice, did y’all let your SM’s know and then stop showing up or did you just block the SM’s number and not show up for the rest of your shifts?🤔

Reasons I’m not doing a 2 week notice is I literally wouldn’t be able to work those “2 weeks” because I have finals and shit.

Just call and tell them it's not worth your time and then pour one out for us who have stayed... They understand.

Gotcha. Thanks!

Just send your SM a text message saying along the lines you have to prioritize your own personal stuff and you can’t handle the shifts anymore and you can’t do the 2 weeks etc.

Be aware that the SM might wanna try to manipulate and guilt trip you to finish your remaining shift.

SBux is a big company — they don’t care if someone quits on the spot or not.

I lasted 4 weeks before I could not take it anymore. I really wanted to put in 2 weeks out of courtesy but I couldn’t bare to work even one more shift. I straight up texted my SM before one of my shifts and told her this job isn’t working out for me and thanks for the opportunity. I never got a response and never showed up again 🤷‍♀️ I felt really guilty but my mental health instantly improved
JustChillinn99 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
That’s great to hear that your mental health improved. I’m going to do that. Thanks for the response !

Easiest option is just tell them you can’t work. No need to make a big deal about it, if they try to guilt you, say no. If they say you needed to supply two weeks, no you didn’t, it’s a courtesy not a requirement. No matter what, do not go in. You don’t need to worry about burning any bridge, so just tell them you’re done.

Honestly, you kind of dodged a bullet.

Buy your SM a “I’m sorry for your loss” card and write your resignation in there and leave it on their desk.

Alternatively, get a cake with “I quit” written on it.

if you reallyyyyy can’t do it then just let them know that you can’t. you’re not obligated to show up, but i’d try to be respectful while still firm that you won’t be working there as of now. if there’s anyway u can even show up for one or two shifts within this two week period i might try to do that just in case you ever thought about working at starbucks again. but ofc above all prioritize yourself and your needs! you know what’s best for you, and your SM should respect that
JustChillinn99 [OP] 7 points 1y ago
Yeah, I might try to finish out the rest of my shifts I’m scheduled for, just so I’m not screwing up the team with them being short staffed, but I definitely don’t want to be put on the schedule anymore. Also, thank you for your comment, appreciate it.

You dont owe starbucks anything, it isnt your life. You can be polite but dont feel any obligation.
The_Infinite_Doctor 11 points 1y ago
100% they definitely don't owe starbucks 2 second notice, but if OP's fellow partners have been cool it's a kindness not to leave them in the lurch.

Personally I would message the manager but I wouldn’t work anymore shifts. You’re an “extra” on the floor, normally, when you’re still training/very new. You and school are the priority, not new coworkers you barely know, not some shitty part time job.

That’s coming from someone who feels extreme guilt about calling in sick the few times i have in 3+ years lol
DistantFrigate 3 points 1y ago
Don’t just stop showing up. That’s incredibly inconsiderate to your coworkers who now have to deal with the stress of a no call no show
JustChillinn99 [OP] 6 points 1y ago
I understand, but right now I’m literally just like shadowing people. I’m still in training, so I doubt me not showing up is going to affect them as much as an experienced barista not showing up is.

Literally made it three weeks and quit. I just told my store manager, who is an absolute an angel and I really liked her. She was totally understanding and told me to still come say hi! I worked at the Starbucks I'm a regular at. No love lost. It just isn't for everyone. Especially when it is a crazy busy store. Mine was non-stop. I have a full time job outside of Starbucks and it just wasn't worth the stress and anxiety.
kikiorangutan 2 points 1y ago
Please at least say something. By not showing up and ghosting you’re screwing over your coworkers who are already miserable. You don’t have to give 2 weeks, but don’t just leave the rest of us hanging
OutlandishnessHead74 2 points 1y ago
If you've only worked 4 days, the store isn't really losing their best worker, so don't feel guilty. I don't see why you should give a two weeks especially since these 2 weeks you'd be training and learning drinks. I know some jobs have a grace period (like 30 or 90 days) where if you don't feel fit for the job, you can leave. Or if they don't feel like you're a fit, they can fire you. Seeing as you've only worked 4 days, you most likely have only gone through the modules and some bar work. I would just talk to your SM and say this job isn't practical with your personal schedule, and it's a lot more tedious than expected.
JustChillinn99 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Yeah I’ve literally only done modules, so overnight shifts (me watching register and cleaning), and shadowing people on bar. So I agree I’m def not the best nor near the best worker 😂 the only think I can see the store being upset at is that they’re losing an overnight person, because if I’m not misten they’re very short staffed on the overnight shifts.
Brief_Coat6526 2 points 1y ago
4 days? I doubt anybody will notice or care.
JustChillinn99 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Yeah the only people who might notice are the overnight people (the store I’m at is 24 hours) and I’ve worked 2 night shifts. They’re all nice and great and were excited to have another person do night shifts because these need more. But other than that I was thinking the same because I don’t even have a trainer, like I’ve just been shadowing and doing register soooo😐
GuySmileyIncognito 2 points 1y ago
Just be nice and thank your manager for the opportunity, but that it's not working out and you will not be continuing the job. Don't give two weeks or finish out the remainder of your shifts. I'm not saying this to be mean, but if you've only had four shifts, you won't really be helping anyone by working them anyway.
TheMadly1 2 points 1y ago
i worked there for 3 years and quit two weeks after transferring to a different store. left a two weeks. SM said i didn’t personally hand it to him so he couldn’t take it. annnnd i didn’t show up for any shifts after that!

you’ve only been there for 4 days, and in my opinion, i would just not show up. you won’t use them as a reference or previous job experience so there’s no point of giving a courtesy.

(im very sour towards starbucks if you can’t tell lol)
sero5074 1 points 1y ago
I would call your SM or go to the store on a day off and tell them you are quitting, and explain why as assertively as you can, none of that kindness bullshit, just be genuine and put up your boundaries. Don’t feel guilty, don’t let them make you guilty. The reason I don’t recommend texting is because they could deem you not rehireable and make it look bad on your background check or whatever. But if you are okay with that, go ahead, just make it as professional and deadpan as possible lol.
SelocAvrap 1 points 1y ago
If you can, email or text instead of calling. That way, you have written, timestamped proof that you gave notice
